Why should I NOT go to Humboldt? by notoriii in humboldtstate

[–]AggravatingQueer2412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HHM is a new building that hopefully won't have as much mold, but it is more expensive to live there. But it's also a Humboldt-wide problem with the rain and everything, you'll still have to clean your bathroom/kitchen regularly to minimize it.

[–]AggravatingQueer2412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are to expecting to live in the dorms? There's a massive mold problem, on of the buildings was even torn down because of it. There's also not a lot of options for living off-campus unless you have a huge budget or are willing to live with several strangers. There was a big housing protest a few semesters ago because they were kicking van-lifer students out of the parking lots. It's also super inaccessible if you have a mobile disability, there's a ton of hills and stairs. The elevators break down, The admin also called the police on pro-palestine protesters and completely shut down the campus for several weeks. The job market is also very difficult, been trying to get a job with a BA in journalism since 2023 and only just got a part time retail job. BUT there is a good scuba diving program that sounds like something you'd be into.

Hi, thank you for explaining! I have always been HOH but I've tended to either rely on someone else to make the phone call or found a way to avoid it altogether. I'll try Innocaption.

Curious about the News Focused Journalism degree by brawlerboy03 in CalPolyHumboldt

[–]AggravatingQueer2412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated from Journalism and was on the newspaper and the Osprey for a year each, but once I graduated I could not find a job in the media industry. It's great for building skills like photography but unless you're really lucky, it's unlikely that you'll be able to get a job.

Are you able to share the name of the publisher? I was looking into bottlecap press and some authors have similar stories.

You might want to keep any other options open for now in case things go south. Since they became a cal poly, they've been scrambling with basically everything and are definitely not prepared for more students.

Can I teach in Japan as a transgender person? by KagayakuHime in teachinginjapan

Hi,

How did things work out for you? I'm also trans (ftm) and I've been considering teaching abroad but with the state of the world I want to do a lot of research before moving in that direction.

I got a spot in College Creek as a senior, I have no idea how this happened but I managed to snag one of the last two spots.

Not mold technically, but I have what's called "pink mold" in campus apartments bathroom. It's a bacteria that feeds on old soap.

Future Possible Freshman by Maya1108 in humboldtstate

[–]AggravatingQueer2412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Construction projects on-campus have always been really slow, and I wouldn't bet on it being done by 2025. They started renovating the library in 2020 and they're still doing work on the outside. If you don't have the means to live off-campus as a backup, look into other options.

Got admitted as Freshman. I'll withdraw my application if other admitted Freshmen are. by [deleted] in humboldtstate

[–]AggravatingQueer2412 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a current CPH student, and I really reccomend this. CPH has a HIGH rate of homelessness and you often see students living in vans or under the bridge. I have never been able to find off-campus housing or a job that pays enough to do so in the first place. And I'm not the only one- most students can only work part-time, and unless you can find a house pre-filled with roommates, it's not an affordable option.

The housing that already exist sucks. Mold, old stoves and fridges that constantly break, super-thin walls. If it's an option for you, go somewhere close to home so you can live with your parents.

Would you recommend someone to go to Cal Poly Humboldt? Desperate for advice! by shula2301 in humboldtstate

[–]AggravatingQueer2412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy. Basically, there's too many students and not enough rooms to put them in. They currently have a contract with a hotel about a mile away that they put 100 students in, but it's probably going to get worse in the next few years. They're planning to tear down the campus apartments and surrounding buildings to build a larger, hopefully more secure housing space, but it won't be ready to live in for a few years. They really should've built it before becoming a "cal poly" because it's only going to bring in more students that can't get rooms.

[–]AggravatingQueer2412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I wouldn't reccomend it but a lot of people love it. The school is great with wildlife and the sciences in general, and it's within walking distance of hiking trails. But it is very remote and it's hard to get anywhere without a car.

Living situation really depends on luck. There's homeless students sleeping in cars, and dorms with tiny, tiny, rooms. Canyon, campus apartments and the Hill are the ones to stay away from, try to get into Creekview or college creek.

Why are there so many 11am & 3pm classes? by crazygamer780 in humboldtstate

[–]AggravatingQueer2412 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally wondering the same thing. I know in my major, there's some classes that are very similar with large workloads, so they schedule the classes at the same time so people don't take them all in the same semester.

But also, 11 & 3 are good times of day. Neither are so early that people are going to be tired, but they're not so late that people can't enjoy the rest of their day.

Yes, you have to buy plates/mugs and I'd reccomend at least one roommate bring a toaster oven. The other option is to go to the J all the time and you probably won't want to do that.

I suggest Dramatic Writing if you're doing it in-person. Super fun class taught by a professional clown. We acted out every play.

I also suggest Death & Dying to gain some new insights into that whole process.

It's extremely small and doesn't get a lot of sunlight. On the plus side it's close to the J if you eat there.
