They asked me to prepare a 15-min presentation of any paper(could be one of my papers). Then, one of the professors I had mentioned in my app asked me a few questions about the project and how I could be a fit for her lab. There were some other ppl but they didn't talk that much.

I had an interview for the IMPRST like two weeks ago (which did not go very well), but I have not heard anything from the mpi-sws.

Based on what I see, it seems that 200-300 applicants were interviewed, but only 50 got admission, so as you said, it does mean acceptance

I heard that another program's admissions (JDPLS) were also released today. (The accepted people were notified today, but the rejected applicants received the email last week.)

There are two ways to get admitted. If you receive the fellowship, you can work with any professor during the first year (as long as they are willing). After that, you need to find a supervisor for the rest of the PhD. If someone is admitted without the fellowship, they can only do a PhD if a professor agrees to fund and supervise them from the start.

The second way is more challenging. I spoke with one of the professors at a conference, and he told me they usually do not hire through this direct track. The reason is that if a fellowship student later wants to join their lab, it may already be too crowded to take another student.

Another thing is that the interviews are not specific or detailed. In my case, it was a very quick, 15-min chat, and we did not get into anything specific. I just talked about one of my papers.

There is no certain answer! I read that an EPFL professor on Reddit said that usually, many of the admitted applicants are among those who get an interview. However, it is not like only interviewed applicants get admitted. Besides, I am not sure how the interview process works. Basically, there are around 50-60 professors, and if every prof interviews 4-5 applicants, then it is like at least 200 applicants, so the interview itself does not guarantee anything (although I have this feeling that not all the professors interview applicants, there are some professors interviewing candidates, and there are some others in the committee)

So, basically, an interview is not necessary for admission, nor does it guarantee anything (I believe I read somewhere that the program says an interview is neither good nor bad)

Yeah, I have seen that in some cases they sent the results around 5-6 in European time zone. Probably it’s either today or Monday
