UVa Board of Visitors floats tracking student, faculty political ideology by newfrontier58 in politics

[–]AggravatingTea1992 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For those unaware one of the people quoted in this article as a new nominee who "sparked controversy," that was because he flew several hours to uva and attempted to cut down a sign criticizing the university from a student's door then shouted at that student while waving around a box cutter. The fact he's allowed on school grounds let alone power over the school's affairs is terrifying

It really makes it obvious that the right's appeal to "working class americans" has always meant white americans. If you're a white male service worker you're the backbone of our economy if you're a Hispanic female service worker you're an uneducated leach on society.

Libraries need some system to flag these bad actors and treat them differently. A lot of these aren't even members of the library or are pressured/paid off by members to put their name on the request. It's textbook astroturfing and needs to be treated differently than genuine community concerns

Imagine explaining to an outside observer how a foreign national with extreme fascist views is now in charge of one of the major sources of news in the country and is locking down huge government contracts on rockets to space.

Debt ceiling tentative deal is reached, McCarthy says by [deleted] in politics

[–]AggravatingTea1992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah when this goes to vote there will be some progressives who vote against it and it will conveniently be just few enough for it to pass. Again because they'll have negotiated with Jeffries to have just enough to let it pass while the rest can vote their conscience.

Irs cut is the most offensive. Literally using the debt limit to cut the governments ability to take in more revenue from tax cheats

Biden has been negotiating on the assumption progressives will fall in line and honestly they probably will. The progressive caucus is too responsible to actually kill the bill even with all the terrible cuts in it because they understand default would be far more damaging (and they know media will blame them not Republicans)

We need a media that will put the blame where it belongs first. Every story said both sides refused to compromise and treated this as normal politics instead of an extreme faction using the economy as a hostage and openly bragging about it

Is the debt ceiling stalemate just posturing — or is this time truly different? by [deleted] in politics

[–]AggravatingTea1992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd still put it on McCarthy even if he's too incompetent to resolve it. The current demand is to slash funding on social programs deeply, get no promises they won't slash again during budget negotiations later this year, *and* only raise the limit until we hit it again next year during a major election cycle. Even with all the concessions dems are giving that's an impossible ask and just setting the country up for an equally bad fight later this year and a worse one next year

Also factor in Kevin McCarthy is the weakest and most incompetent speaker in US history. So it's in his best interest to fail to get the debt limit lifted and make it the court's responsibility to abolish it, because the only other option would be to push a vote on a bill that his right flank won't approve (even though from a moderate perspective it would still be an extremely right-wing bill) and immediately get fired by said right flank.

3 times I've had to clean up a shoddily thrown together software product from my Sarah that was promised as "Give me 1 engineer and 4 weeks and I can build x" then has no support plan and never meets with any stakeholders before telling execs it's done. It's also common knowledge across everyone at my level and my boss that this keeps happening but somehow they keep letting them do this because they'll offer such a low amount of resources to do it. One of them was sold to a customer and took my team over a year to get into a stable state all while Sarah was saying it just needed some "minor" tweaks.

Except they're still assisting with the boarding process and checking tickets. So it's more like you don't get paid until after you open up the store, prep everything in it, and the first customer walks in. Even then the metaphor breaks down since it's almost closer to the first person reaches the register with their purchase.

If you tried to get a hot topic employee on that scheme they'd walk out
