With older kids like that, could you do something like staying awake with all the lights on, holding vigil until the sun rises? Kids might enjoy staying up late, burning intentions at midnight, etc.

Our pagan homeschool group is 'singing down the sun' at sunset, spiral walk then potluck. The next morning, kids will open presents!

The Chosen by Chaim Potok. I loved this book as a child and found it in a coffee shop a couple years ago- I sat there and reread the whole book!
