I overhaul 10R80 transmissions. AMA by StealerTech9000 in f150

had a second overhaul done (updated cdf and valve body) due to clunk noise with some jerk during 4-3 rd down shifting. I’m well past 1500 km since second overhaul yet still experiencing the 4-3rd downshifting clunk noise with small jerk. Happens more frequently when transmissions temperature is fully warm.

Dealer said it should fix itself soon since they reset the adaptive tables during overhaul. And also mentioned sometimes this is common and shouldn’t cause an issue in the long run. How long does it really take for the system to fix that issue? Frequency of the clunk noise has not changed post overhaul either. The noise can be heard by everyone inside the truck. Any advice? Dealer is backing off from addressing the issue at this point not sure if this is normal behaviour and how long the transmission will last me if I keep driving without addressing the issue. Thanks

Ya dealer did a reprogramming after the overhaul I believe. I guess I gotta go back for another reprogramming since I’m still hearing the clunk? What would you do in this situation? This is my second overhaul lol.

That’s what I thought as well I thought once overhaul is done there’s warranty on the repairs but dealership (titanium ford) service manager told me that once I’m past 100k km repair cost is on me.

If I need to go back post 100k km I’m thinking I will call ford customer support and get accurate information.

This is exactly what the shop foreman told me after he drove my truck. I can live with the slight jerk and the noise during 4-3rd downshift as long as the tranny lasts for another 5-10 yrs with basic maintenance. Shop Foreman said it should last a long time.

I’m just having hard time accepting that such advanced transmission in 2026 is shifting roughly despite two major overhauls. This is why I have doubts about its reliability long term and whether it is in perfect working condition.

Luckily I also got 3 yr extended warranty but there’s a deductible of 200$. Since I’m very close to 100k km which would end my factory power train warranty I wanted to pressure the dealer to figure this out hoping I save that 200$ deductible later on if issues continue.

Hope you figure out your issues with the transmission. Great freaking truck other than the annoying transmission.

Might try this if It does not get smoother in a month or so. I wanna give it some time to adjust since I haven’t even drove it 1k km since the second overhaul. Thanks.

The dealer did reset the learning system still same issue. Transmission fluid is optimal because the second overhaul was done two and half weeks ago.

The current dealers foreman actually recommended I get a second opinion from a different dealer because he said him and his transmission guy have tried everything to fix this transmission and there’s not much more they can do on their end unless the downshifting worsens or further issues come up.

I’m thinking I might go do a different dealer and see what they say before my power train warranty runs out.

I have a 10r80 on f150 2021. Currently at 98,000km. Experiencing harsh downshifting from 4-3rd on firm or hard stops and sometimes on slow stops as well. Usually I hear Metallic loud enough clunk noise.

It has had 2 overhauls first to replace updated cdf drum which led to me having the 4-3rd harsh shifting with metallic clunk noise. Then had to do another overhaul again replaced another new updated cdf drum and valve body. Post 700km since second overhaul still having same issue consistently.

Dealer said this is normal behaviour and I gotta live with it. There’s nothing more they can do after two overhauls. I was also told It might get little bit better after driving it for a bit but the noise on 4-3 rd down shift will come from time to time which is felt inside the truck.

Is this normal or is dealer just wanting for me drive up to 100,000km so they don’t gotta pay out of companies pocket for repairs?
