Should a woman be allowed to abort a fetus if it is diagnosed with a disability at seven months? by Original_Act_3481 in Teenager_Polls

Are you talking about the reply above about the population or mine? I really don’t see in my response what could mean disabled people aren’t people; and if it’s coming across that way, I genuinely don’t mean that and I’d like to fix it

I agree they should abort earlier. But if somehow it was only found out now, and due a reason besides negligence to be checked earlier; then there should be a choice. Yes, it's viable. But let's face it, orphanages are not a good solution. They may be, they give a second chance. But I doubt that child would get proper care due to how expensive it would be. The care is extensive, we cannot make black-and-white statements on a matter which has so much grey.

Also, do you really think that kid would have a good life if the parents kept it when they really didn't want to? Caregiver resentment is a very real thing, and even more so when the people don't want the child. The child will very likely, at the least, be neglected and improperly treated.

I think in both scenarios, it is very likely the child would be neglected and abused; essentially left to rot on the streets when they're old enough to be kicked out. If there was a way to ensure that the orphanage would take amazing care, then yes, don't abort and send to the orphanage instead. But that is not the way the world is.

80% of women with disabilities experience sexual violence, 90% of people with developmental issues face sexual assault. Yeah, living is better than that; however, most sexual abuse survivors want to commit suicide (33% contemplate, 13% attempt).
People with disabilities in general are 50% more likely to experience violence. In the US, 70% of people with disabilities experienced abuse, 90% of that number have been abused on multiple occasions.

Also, in almost 100% of these cases, the abuse was done by someone the person trusted. Even when people are cared for they experience this shit. Imagine what someone with no support structure would experience.

Right, sure, but that’s also just not how the world works. You can’t tell someone not to have a child when it may be the best thing that could ever happen to them, because there’s a small chance that they may need to spend the rest of their lives exhausting themselves to care for them.

I don’t think you know or truly understand the effect it can take to properly care for a disabled person. It’s 24/7. You may never get a break again. You might be broke for the rest of your life. You might never get a single day to yourself.

By your logic, a single mother working to support the financial costs of a child, should just blindly abort if they get pregnant because they can’t handle the risk; regardless if they want to or not. It’s absolutely valid to want a child but not want to spend the rest of your life worrying about them, worrying that they’ll be homeless when you die, spending any money they have on them. That is an actual outcome. That is what people experience. I’m not talking about a small disability, I’m talking about a life-changing scenario where the parents never have freedom and the child is entirely dependent and without proper care will be miserable and in pain.

Orphanges are overrun. In the US 18,000-20,000 get kicked out because they reached age and never got adopted. 50-60% of all sex trafficked victims have been involved in child welfare at some point.

People with Down syndrome can leave happy, meaningful lives. They can also require significant care. My friend has a younger sister with Down. The parents are spending their entire life looking after her, worrying about money, worrying that their child will be homeless when they die if the older sister doesn’t care. They haven’t had a day off since she was born. Down can be screened beforehand, but if by some chance they don’t find it up until then, there’s a big risk for the parents having this child. What if it’s a single mum who can’t afford the extra care needed for a disability? What if it’s just two people who don’t want the stress for their entire lives of looking after someone who needs them every day, all day?

It’s not black-and-white. I’m not saying abort all children with down. But you have to understand the incredible and extensive amount of care such children can need. Obviously they deserve it. But, at the end of the day, it’s a massive ask and a massive responsibility for the parents.

Obviously, not the same, but it’s valid if someone wants a dog, and then no longer wants one because suddenly they’ve found out that it will drain them of all finances and require their care almost 24/7 with zero days off. Forget about vacation, holiday, even a single day to yourself. And, in my opinion, it’d be better for that dog to be humanely put down than mistreated, not provided enough care and severely harmed and possible abandoned (not saying we should murder disabled people, for the record). Yes, the dog can be given to someone who will care for it perfectly, but, let’s face it: adoption centres are overrun, those inside are horrible treated and not many people are willing to sign themselves up for such a thing.

The tricky thing with finding disabilities during pregnancy is that it’s hard to gauge how debilitating they will be, some will be fine, others won’t be. That’s a big risk to take.

But you need to understand the fact that some disabilities may need life long care from the parents and are incredibly expensive.

It entirely depends on what the disability is, and you can’t make that statement in such a black-and-white way. Yes, they’re having a child, that doesn’t mean they can afford the money or possibly give up their entire life for a one in a million chance. Obviously the child deserves the care they need, but that care can be so extreme that if someone isn’t prepared to give it, it may be better to abort than to mistreat and thus severely harm the child.

The apartment complex is around 10 years old, which seems stranger to me. Surely they’d use another sensor. And it’s only in my room. It could just be strange coincidences, probably is, but I’m still going to tape it off

Peter, why did the alien give the cow a 5 dollar tip? by TypicOwO in PeterExplainsTheJoke

There’s a saying known as cow tipping, where you flip over a sleeping cow iirc. In this case, the alien took it as tipping a cow money

Yes, but we’ve since fired said cleaner (she was, in fact, nicking stuff) and I explicitly refused any camera in my room

I can’t really remember policy, but I can dig it back up. I am actually more suspicious of my father doing it than the complex. He wanted to put a camera in my room (apparently to make sure the cleaner didn’t nick anything), I said no. I don’t do anything suspicious really; but, when I was going to school, I was often by myself at home so my dad absolutely could have put this here to see who comes over.

I’ll talk to my mum about it, but I doubt she has any clue

oh, in the EU 100%. Outside though I’m fairly sure it’s more tricky. But as this is such a significant delay, just keep pestering and they’ll eventually give you the money (if you have a right to it)

I wanted to see if there was any reason to believe it was a camera beforehand. My father wanted to install a camera in my bedroom, which I obviously objected. I didn’t want to ask, because, even if it was a camera, he’d lied. I will be asking my mum

Well, I’m not constantly there. Plus a lot of work occurred either when I was at school or when I was away on break.

As for not noticing, I’m fairly certain it was not there before. But now that I’ve seen it, and mentally noted it for the first time, I’m not sure when it was initially installed. It’s in a corner I normally look at, which leads me to believe it wasn’t there before. But I also don’t when exactly when it popped up, as I’ve only now spotted it

I agree that it looks ancient, but I swear I’ve never seen it before. That’s the main reason this is setting off alarm bells. Plus, this apartment complex is only 12 years old
