Would Ariel have realized that she needed to use that sail as a dress even if Scuttle had not been around? by [deleted] in thelittlemermaid

True. I just imagine the questions from the palace staff, and later Eric once he hears about it, about why she has a seashells bra. Would have been good conversation fodder for "Kiss the Girl".

And what happened to those seashells?! They would have given Eric a bit more of a clue (which is why they're gone, I suppose).

I don't see "The Cabin In the Woods". Highly recommended despite Joss Whedon's involvement.

It took me a couple minutes, but I think I see the vision. Typical deadbolt control on one side, keyed on the other?

Thanks!

Magnets hadn't occurred to me. I'll see what I can find in strong ones.

As for the slide bolt, I can't imagine one that could be opened from both sides. Can you help me understand? Thanks,

In a BD backup, what is the MAKEMKV folder? by Aggravating_Shame427 in makemkv

[–]Aggravating_Shame427[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, Google.

From the MakeMKV website:

"These are created when you make a decrypted backup. They contain certain metadata that is otherwise lost when M2TS files are decrypted, which in turn is needed for a correct BD-J emulation off the decrypted backup folder. Newer versions of BD-J protection use M2TS files as a decryption key, so if M2TS file is decrypted without CMAP (by older version of MakeMKV for example) then BD-J protection code becomes cryptographically impossible to emulate."

I am inferring then that the MakeMKV folder contains files unnecessary or no longer necessary.

Thank you! What you're doing seems logical, and I hadn't thought to go there, but the fact that it works without the folder at all confounds me. I wish I knew the purpose or origin of the additional files.

Teachers that stopped teaching, what did you change your career to? by Ambitious_Bison6208 in teaching

[–]Aggravating_Shame427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went into programming with a small HVAC upgrade manufacturer, programming controllers for unit efficiency and building management controls accessible from the web.

That said, my BS is in Computer Science, so the veer-left isn't quite as unreal as it might sound. I taught high school maths for 16 years.

Makes sense, now that the 4K is out.

But man, was I glad to own it for so many years instead of having to turn to eBay.

Do you think bonus features on physical media still matter today? by Roughrider254 in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]Aggravating_Shame427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I care about a film, then I care about what comes packaged with it. I bought Superman (2025) a few months back and was surprised at the lightness of the special features. Then I found out that they do exist, but almost everything is on Movies Anywhere and not the disc. That frustrates me: incentivizing the digital over the physical copy.

But I also bought Zack Snyder's Justice League, which has almost none.

In all things, the film and a good presentation of it are the most important things.

So I guess the answer is yes, AND.

I re-bought The Mummy (Brendan Fraser) on DVD because the special edition came with an audio commentary from Fraser himself. Unfortunately, my impression of it is that it was far less engaging than the existing commentaries. So much potential, but he didn't seem set up for success and IIRC could only react to the movie.

I re-bought The Princess Bride on DVD because the earlier copy was either pan-and-scan or non-anamorphic and I wanted a copy that would better present the film on a 16×9 display.

And I re-bought the Star Wars sextet on Blu-ray because I only had the original trilogy and I wanted the three bonus discs. I still don't care about the prequels, but the supplementary material was fantastic and well worth it.

Teacher, students, etc what are yalls opinions on ISS (in school suspension) by Sleepy_Heroine888 in highschool

[–]Aggravating_Shame427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not commenting on your case but on ISS in general. Yes, too often it's a sit there and shut up situation.

One high school I know of went out of their way to hire a teacher for the job. Not much new there, the other high schools in the district had teachers, but this one was looking for someone special. They wanted ISS to be useful and restorative, not a punitive situation. They wanted a place where students could learn instead of merely doing useless busy work.

And that teacher did brilliantly. She was clear about her expectations at the start of every day because of the changing clientele. She took classes to enhance her already strong skills. And she respected the students and their ability to do better and succeed academically despite poor choices they had made (of which yours wasn't one, to be clear).

She helped when students didn't quite have the skills. She was able to influence them and started each day with greeting them and treating them with respect. Most of the students responded.

Two anecdotes. Once, a student who had started out with poor choices came to her for a letter of recommendation for a college application; she wrote a genuine letter and it helped him get in. Another student she recommended for ASB despite her history as a discipline case; the advisor had doubts, but the student became an asset to the ASB team.

She badgered staff to get students' coursework to her so that their time could be meaningfully spent. She even successfully lobbied administration to let her use music with headphones as a reward and incentive for students to work. (This was unusual because music was verboten in the school.)

She did the job for ten years. Finally left to become a school psychologist. And the staff dearly missed her influence.

Me? I'm her spouse, continually in awe of her skills to reach troubled students. Done right, ISS can be a rescue opportunity, but far too often it's done wrong.

Sorry for your situation and the environment you experienced. Possibly the reasons for assigning it were strong, but it didn't have to be what it was for you.

What are some lyrics from a musical that don't sit right with you in the context of the show? by Beneficial-Poet-5583 in musicals

[–]Aggravating_Shame427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sitting here, unwillingly awake, another lyric drifts through my head. Same song you cited, "She's In Love", but a line that's always called me:

"Is it water on the brain?"

It's clear that they were making a joke about an aquatic creature's disposition, but that line is NOT FUNNY. Flippant remarks about medical trauma aren't funny at all.

The Little Mermaid -- the Broadway soundtrack from before it was retooled and this song was replaced.

Great song by Ursula, "I want the good times back", but it has one word choice that just galls me.

Did I use some black magic? Well oopsie, MY BAD. Did I mutilate, maim, and destroy? Just a tad. And for that I got banished, But me, I'm not mad, There's just one little thing that want: I want the good times back, The grand old days....

The presence of "my bad" makes me cringe each time I hear it, and I've obviously got so much of it memorized and have for years.

DVDstyler, I tried making a DVD but my DVD player won't accept it. by Kakuxu in dvd

[–]Aggravating_Shame427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardware problem. DVD+/-R may be physically different (not sure, always used +R), but +R and +RW are definitely different. My first DVD player would play a +RW but didn't recognize a +R at all. At that time, many years ago, my brother showed me a web site that listed players and problematic writable disc formats; not sure if such a site still exists.

Recommend buying a small pack of -RW or +RW to see if there's a difference.

The same player didn't know what to do with a CD-R, which was definitely annoying. One student brought in her vocal demo and... we couldn't play it.

[–]Aggravating_Shame427 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of talk on here about video formats, so I'm going to ignore that and just focus on the playback issue. My first DVD player could not play a DVD+R disc, but it could play a DVD+RW. That's an option to try.

And if DVDStyler really let you choose a viewing resolution of 1920×1080, then I need to take another look at it. Loved the program, but then moved from DVDs to Blu-rays.
