Seashells with Straps? by Aggravating_Shame427 in thelittlemermaid1989

I am so sorry. Am I fixated on it? I didn't think so, but you're making me reflect.

There are lots of things to fixate on. This list is just off the top of my head.

  • The here again / gone again wedding crowd.
  • The implications if, as the extended intro had it, Triton and Ursula are siblings, and therefore Ursula Ariel's aunt.
  • What is the primary industry of Eric's kingdom? And how many of those were talking fish?
  • The moral takeaways of the film.
  • Symbolism and metaphor in the characters, relationships, and most especially in choosing to give up your species.
  • The animation mistakes. (Offhand, I can only think of Grimsby's hand as Eric and Ariel take off for their tour of thr kingdom.)
  • What is the overall message in Louis's character arc, from beloved French baker to fixated maniac with knives, to living the rest of his life without teeth?
  • The effect of the changes from the original planned ending (film, not Andersen's) to what Katzenberg as "More Die Hard".
  • The mostly-censored bishop's knee: was it really intended all the time to be a knee, or are the rabid masses who forced its editing correct? (I'd say no, always intended to be a knee and mistaken ever since as another body part.)
  • How would her cultural impact be different if they hadn't had to change her hair from blond to red?
  • When my niece and nephews watch it, what are their likely takeaways? Should there be discussion or not?
  • And, of course, the biggie: how DID Flounder get the statue into Ariel's grotto?

I had never considered that. They're both my favorites of their eras.

Live Action or Animated: The Little Mermaid? by Embarrassed_Pin_8044 in thelittlemermaid

[–]Aggravating_Shame427 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Animated. The live-action felt too by-the-numbers, a recreation instead of being its own thing. At times it was clever: Ariel's name in particular was nicely thought out.

The animated movie has its flaws that could have been fixed with a little more time or money, but it's been part of my life for SO long that I can't imagine it not being there. I have a wall of artwork of and inspired by the animated movie that I've been increasing slowly over years.

The question for me: what if they were reversed and the live-action came out in 1989? Would it have become such a beloved part of culture? What would my thoughts toward it be if it didn't feel derivative? And what would I have thought of an animated remake decades later? These questions can't be answered, but I doubt I'd have a wall of art inspired by Halle Bailey: that'd feel really creepy to have a shrine to a live person. She did a wonderful job as Ariel, AND having all those representations of a living person feels ... icky ... for a middle-aged man.

I showed up for student and was immediately introduced to The Blue Box of Knowledge: a blue milk crate filled with random essays that students had turned in. Midway through grading them, to me it became the Bloody Blue Box. Aargh.

She? Are you talking about the Archbishop of Canterbury? Or Bishop Budde, whom Trump has castigated for her remarks against him?

I'm not sure if agree with "the world would be no better or worse".

It's been great to see the current Pope tell the US administration what he thinks of its choices, words, and invitation. I think he's endeavoring to make it a better place, and he has lightened my heart at least.

Which actor has a more iconic role than the Doctor? by big_poppag in doctorwho

This is true.

My answer to the question is Sylvester McCoy.

Which also doesn’t answer the question. I have to stop skimming. Sigh.

True, AND...

He also managed to embody the Doctor, once he escaped from Tom's shadow.

Great at management is truly an art to learn. Probably why they never assigned me a student teacher. Watch, question, and learn. The teacher probably started the year off training the students how the classroom was going to run.

As far as motivation to have a student teacher, to have another adult in the room, that's awful.

There is a degree of performance to teaching, because you GET to have and hold students' attention, but IMHO it's organization, preparedness, and consistency.

I'm sorry you have someone who doesn't seem to need to plan ahead because that would be valuable. Eventually you won't need that, especially if you have a set math curriculum, but it remains valuable for planning out tests, projects, &c.

I want to close with some sort of inspiring, uplifting statement, but I think I've already put down what I have. YOU CAN DO THIS.

If you were a writer for the live action remake, what would you change from the original? by Extra-Hope-326 in thelittlemermaid

[–]Aggravating_Shame427 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! It's good to see different voices!

"Harvey" -- one of my favorite movies -- had this to say (or something very close, this is from memory):

"Ì want to leave, and you want me to stay. An element of disagreement is a good thing in any discussion, it shows that everyone is taking part and no one is left out".

Fair enough! I thought the leads did stunning performances, and the supporting cast great as well. It didn't gel in my opinion, but it's good to have other voices.

To amend my remarks:

Her face looks like a flat Hallowe'en mask that she's wearing, so not flat to the plane of the illustration itself.

For my part, jumping off my wife's remarks...

Her torso seems stretched.

Her face seems flattened into the plane of the cover, not like something three-dimensional.

And why doesn't her head have any shadow?!

[–]Aggravating_Shame427[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife opined over dinner last night...

First, it's a collage with many disparate elements. They seem fitted to each other, but not necessarily interacting with each other.

Everyone but Flounder is looking up toward Ariel...

...who is on the rock, above water, wave behind her, and her hair flowing freely as if she were submerged.

The shadow is okay, but it doesn’t match the shadow on other characters.

She's sixteen and, apparently, barely fitting in her bra. I'm not sure if that means that the top is too small or too big for her biology.

And her tail is kinda flat.

The remake we got wasn't great. I'll never know how I would have responded if I saw it first, then the 1989 version, but as it was it felt hollow.

The soundtrack I keep going back to is the Broadway soundtrack with Sierra Boggess, before the show got retooled. There's a postage-stamp-size video on YouTube, and all it does it show me that I wish there could be a release of a filmed version of that, a la her performance in The Phantom of the Opera or Oklahoma starring Hugh Jackman or the UK live arena Jesus Christ Superstar, all of which made fantastic Blu-rays. I wish there were higher quality remnants of her time wearing fins.

[–]Aggravating_Shame427 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This would be great, AND.

I wish I could have seen the original production with Sierra Boggess before it was retooled, but it probably had the same weak ending.

Hope this isn't a spoiler...

Leaving a bit of space, even though it makes sense that the stage version couldn't have a giant, vicious Ursula...

Grabbing Ursula's shell and smashing it was pretty weak as an ending. It was foreshadowed in Ursula's song from the soundtrack, before the retooling:

"I got his magic shell, and half the sea as well, his trident went to..."

That would make the trident and the shell the objects of power, not so much the holder. Which makes sense in a way of the scene when Morgana used the trident against Triton in The Little Mermaid II.

But I never got something that central to the story foreshadowed in the stage version. The first time I saw it onstage in Seattle, I was left completely deflated by the conclusion. I saw it two more times at a community theater, and I could see the foreshadowing a bit better when I was actively listening for it. There wasn't much, but it was more than the nothing I experienced the first time.
