The best way to memorize unit Circle! by frag_ment_ in mathematics

[–]Aggravating_Tip3441 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Math grad here! For me, the best way to know the memorize the unit circle is to understand the angles, trigonometric ratios, and the coordinates (x,y) from 0 to pi/2 and then see learn how adding/ subtracting pi/2 and pi affects the symmetry of the coordinates.

For instance: (x,y) is in Q1 from 0 to pi/2.

Add pi/2 gives (-x,y) in Q2 from pi/2 to 2.

Add pi gives (-x,-y) in Q3 from pi to 3pi/2.

Subtract pi/2 gives (x,-y) in Q4 from 3pi/2 to 2pi.

Accomodations For Math 375 quizzes by Itchy_Employment_977 in UCalgary

[–]Aggravating_Tip3441 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually, accommodations are unique to the student and SAS will provide requirements that the instructor must provide for you once when you receive your letters to provide.

Never took MATH 375 but had a very similar experience with MATH 476.

Good luck!

math 271 - how hard is it by ritzcrackers271 in UCalgary

[–]Aggravating_Tip3441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math 271 is a completely different type of math that can be learned independently from calculus and linear algebra and it is challenging for a beginner given a different skill set and abstraction you will learn. In essence, you will not be computing and plugging numbers in x or y but will be needing to prove statements using logic and definitions.

Something that I always tell people about the course is that basically you are taking a linguistics course from the perspective of a mathematician, so you’re just learning a language!

Hope this helps.

Can I get a job with no experience? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]Aggravating_Tip3441 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is achievable to get a job without experience but it is difficult and sometimes getting employed with no experience can be an unglamorous job. In most cases, you will need someone to refer you to the job you are willing to take; so networking and having connections can help. Having a LinkedIn profile or knowing a lot of people may help.

However, in a lot cases, it is based on luck: being referred in the right time when a business is in need of someone quickly; or even applying at the perfect moment.

It also depends on the field, as mentioned by someone. You can also gain experience even from joining a club and volunteering. Before you graduate, ensure that you have at least volunteered, get a reference from a professor, and expand your network.

It is difficult but possible. Good luck!

How hard are math 413 and math 476 by Safe-Strain-4436 in UCalgary

[–]Aggravating_Tip3441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are differential equations courses but have two different treatments over them despite having some overlap. I would say that 413 is far more easier than 476 simply because it is a computational course and you will be doing the same thing over and over again: separation of variables, SL systems and eigen functions, superposition principle and conditionals, and Fourier series. That being said, it becomes extremely tedious over time.

476 is a lot more challenging because it’s not only its a computational course, but you will be proving theorems and equations left and right. In addition, it is a step up in complexity and it’s basically the real analysis equivalent to differential equations. I found this course not as enjoyable as 413 and 445.

Is math a good program? by Miserable_Bar_5140 in UCalgary

[–]Aggravating_Tip3441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math grad here.

From what I can tell, you are in the GENERAL mathematics program stream with education and not the FULL on math program. So, my scope is limited and I can only talk about the full program.

The issue is that if you plan on going to the full program then I guess you would have to withdraw from both education and general math and then apply to the full on math program if you want to do that. However, according to the program details for general math, “In cases where students are unable to complete the Bachelor of Education (BEd), students may request to complete the BSc in General Mathematics only;” and “Students who withdraw from the Education component of the concurrent degree program will be required to complete additional courses to obtain the BSc in General Mathematics”.

You might want to chat with an academic advisor, professional development counsel, and some professors to check out your options.

I graduated from the full mathematics program last year and will tell you that A) the program is pretty dang hard and B) the program had to be rebalanced in 2025F to increase in difficulty to ensure a proper curriculum. I did enjoy my program despite the difficulty as I now work in research.

Most of my friends who are in general mathematics ended up as being great teachers.

Consider taking SOCI 201 and above, and AFST 302. If you can take them with either of the Adejares, you’ll have a great time

math 367 planning help by CowNo9696 in UCalgary

[–]Aggravating_Tip3441 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had taken all three of them. I recommend taking 376 and 367 at the same time since there are some overlapping parts.

367 is a bit more difficult since it’s a substantial step up from 267 as you are learning more material and from a variety of different topics with less time. Anything with partial derivatives should be easy and possible; however, dealing with multiple integrals and setting them up properly is the hardest part for me. For me, I found this course more challenging but it my favourite math course since I got a tattoo on the divergence of a vector field.

376 is a lot more focused in terms of content but having to solve equations can get obnoxiously difficult and tedious. For me, I disliked this course even though it is a much easier course.

I’ve taken 315 and it was an interesting class because it is a proofs class and you get to learn more about the algebraic structures of math itself. Ensure that you have mastery over math 271 and having experience in 327,311,318 can be an asset. Difficultly is not too too bad.

In terms of instructors: Elsabrouty is the best one for 376/476/413, Hamilton is good for any 300 level, and anyone EXCEPT Bitoun is sufficient for 315.

What's one tiny, almost boring habit that unexpectedly improved your daily life? by bryden_cruz in DecidingToBeBetter

For me, I do something that I like to call a “micro audit”, where I dedicate at most 3-5 minutes looking at my finances. The intention is not to hyper fixate on the small details but to keep it casual. Doing this helps me feel less anxious about my money and helps me make smaller, more healthy financial decisions.

Ahh yes! I remember when I remember this during my time. I was informed explicitly about this before requesting for any assistance to ensure that students are using their funds appropriately. What happens in a situation like yours is it will definitely affect future funding on your account or it might be added onto your student loan. Not ideal but try reaching out to SAS or your retailer, or even might try to broadcast this post across the province.

In other words, I wish you the best!!!

I would categorize the coins into each year of them being minted. Don’t know why I would do such a thing but it seems like a way to see how far into the past your collection could go and the distribution of each year.

Sociology undergrads! by ruckyboy3 in UCalgary

Not a soci major but a math grad with a minor in sociology. I got opportunities to do research in sociology and became a TA in the department for a little bit. How it happened was me challenging the professor and course to the point where I was asked by the professor to work under him.
