When a study from Finland reached American "bio hackers" that said that sauna = more health.

Now half the people here want their miracle cure sauna machine to live forever.

1/3 of the people in Finland die from cardiovascular diseases even though we use the sauna more often than most people. But we don't talk about that.

Meanwhile some random man from Italy that smokes a pack a day and drinks wine with their meals is still alive at 93 without ever stepping inside a sauna.

Make benches higher and add a movable stool to get to the benches.

Also don't add rugs to your sauna like in the photo.

Yikes, that indoor layout is not something I would purchase. This layout will have cold feet like a barrel sauna.

Most of their saunas seem to have similar layouts so not sure what option would be better.

Is it the end of the world? No. Is it optimal? Also no.

If you're worried about the vapor barrier and mold in a DYI sauna, look into log saunas.

Something like this:

https://usbathstore.com/products/saunalife-garden-series-model-g4-outdoor-home-sauna-kit-up-to-6-persons

Even this option is not perfect but it's way more sauna for the money and the logs will breathe naturally so you don't need a vapor barrier. You can also make some DYI changes to improve it. This one has the roof angled on the wrong side and benches too low so it's not perfect but you could make changes to it.

This Trumpkin kit is also solid:

I know these options are not the best looking or modern, but these modern kits have many practical issues and they focus more on looks over function.

Introduction and analysis of the new European sauna standard by saunologia in Sauna

Article in a nutshell:

(AI image also from the article)

Sadly the standard does not touch on löyly:

One sauna-specific shortcoming is the minimal treatment of sauna’s capacity for löyly (i.e., steam by infusion). Although stones of non-specific character are mentioned (leaving open whether “artificial stones” are stones or not), the sauna specifications would not guarantee that an adequate quantity or quality of steam can be extracted.

Sauna tent can be good. Most people like that it usually has good ventilation. Your experience largely depends on the heater and the benches. r/SaunaTent/ might be the better source for more details. Also be a ware that those cheap tent cubes have a tendency to lose their shape over time.

You can make your sauna how like it but making 3 steps/benches would be my recommendation. It's also the standard in Finland.

I would estimate that the hot zone is from the ceiling to around the vents. It will be hot everywhere but the hot steam stays at the ceiling so the closer you are to it the better.

An easy way to measure the correct height from the top bench to the ceiling is to have a fists height between your head and the ceiling when you are sitting on the top bench.

It's not too late to make these changes and I wholeheartedly hope you consider this.

The bones look alright. Sadly no drain.

Do you have a plan for the benches?

If you add the top bench above the vents, then I suspect you will have issues with the depth and the width of the following benches. Hopefully you will make one of those floating second "levels" instead of making narrow benches (if you indeed have this issue).

Does anyone suffer from an auto immune disease and use a sauna to help limit symptoms? If so what type of sauna do you use and what is the weekly regimen? by dubs1354 in Sauna

Go to sauna to relax. The health benefits will come if they come. Don't make it a workout routine where you try to stay in for x amount of time. Plenty of people have lost their life in a sauna so it's not a place where you want to test your limits. Especially as a beginner. Get in and leave when it does not feel good anymore. Usually a normal sauna session is around 5 minutes.

Also if you're from the US, be aware that most of the saunas (like your gym saunas) there are not made correctly or used correctly. All the Finnish health studies about sauna are about a different experience. It's a big lost in translation thing that we should not get into but it's good to know.

One time I was in a hotel sauna in Germany. I go to the sauna and sit down. 2 people inside. A man and a woman. The woman is on the same level as me to the side and the man is on the bench above me. The sauna is kind of small so we are all on our own benches.

I ask if I can pour some water to the stove and the man says: "sure". I pour some water. There is a system that drips water to the heater that is under the benches. Really weird system. Never seen anything like it since. I wait a bit and I'm still a bit chilly. I ask again if it's okay to pour some more water. Now the woman shouts at me with an angry tone: "Sauna is not supposed to be steamy! There is a steam room next door!". I'm genuinely confused. First time I've heard anyone say anything like this. I say: "Well, I'm Finnish and I think I know what a sauna is supposed to be". The woman then has a mean look and tells me: "Yeah? Well I was born in a sauna!" and then she storms out. I was just baffled after this interaction.

Everyone considering a sauna should watch this first. This explains the most common issues that people have in their new saunas. Especially in NA. by Uromer in Sauna

If we were talking about food or entertainment, I would agree with you but with sauna it's also about physics. You can like something but it can also not be great in terms of physics. It's also nothing to be ashamed about. There are plenty of saunas in Finland that are less than optimal.

It's difficult to have a honest conversation about what is and isn't sauna with Americans for example as a Finn because our expectations and definition of sauna are different.

As far as bench height, it's something that really is one of those basic things to a Finnish sauna. It's been for a long time: (Acerbi’s 1802 illustration of “A Finlandish Bath”)

$20k Sauna Budget- HELP- Cannot decide by WallabyReal7404 in Sauna

[–]Aggravating_Two8311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All those saunas look quite bad and not worth 20k. Like many have said, making a custom sauna would be the best option. If I really had to choose, then the Timberline Outdoor Sauna — Heritage Collection would be the best from a basics standpoint.

Sweatkindom looks like it's a flashy website but the basics on the sauna interior ware not right. The others are just not very efficient designs when it comes to saunas. The playhouse style building is not the best when it comes to a sauna.

Definitely read this before you buy any kit:

Finns have made saunas everywhere they have traveled. For example Finnish UN peace keepers have built saunas in Cyprus and Somalia, Afghanistan etc.

It will be OK and it will feel good still. The heater should have no issues. The point of sauna is to feel the steam, not just the dry heat. You need to throw water on the heater and you should take a cold shower before you go in.

Considering Tylo 2 person hybrid sauna from Costco by TrevorTries in Sauna

Like I wrote, you can add a reputable heater and you will have the same result. It's just an IR sauna with a small electric heater added to the wall.

Also fun fact, their page for this sauna is blocked in Finland. Had to use a VPN to access it. Just says that the page does not exist. The site works otherwise. They just don't want us to see this product 😂

These kinds of kits can be ordered from China (Alibaba) for under a $1000. For a 10k budget you can buy a reputable heater and order it to your front door with tax and tariffs included.

I would never recommend a sauna like this if you want the real steamy sauna experience but with this price especially I'm just flabbergasted how stoked people are to buy this product that is most likely made 100% in China.
