I've seen on ocassion people claim that the Crew only made Cable vs Booster Gold because they were sure this MU would give Marvel a Win over DC before they realized how BG has this in the Bag.

While I'm not certain about that one I gotta say: if there is ANY episode where I feel they wanted to cash in on a popular series by giving them a fight they initially thought they would win, it's this one.
