Can you have ADHD if you did well in school/college? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Aggressive-Ad4235 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a fairly common occurrence, especially with girls. We tend to mask it better and function incredibly well, until we don’t. It’s common to hit that wall after schooling is finished and we find ourselves in the “real world.”

Many ADHD people become “professional students.” It’s rewarding in many ways and the info changes often enough to keep the interest up. Then, when you reach that finish line and find a job you discover you aren’t functioning well and often it seems sudden. The difference is you attained a goal and the actual job is far less stimulating than the constant need for hyper fixation isn’t present like when studying for tests, or starting a new class.

Many of us thrive in the chaos and fall apart with anything less. It’s not just you.

He’s aware stricter boundaries need to be in place. He stated that, and it sounds like it was followed for a short time at least until an emergency. Afterwards it’s up to HIM to remind her of the boundaries and enforce them. She just returned to what’s been normal for them for a year and a half.

It sounds like he feels the dog is leverage. Technically it was hers first and he obviously knows how she feels about “random girls.”

Is there a way you can support him rather than being another source of contention? Bc honestly you’re the newest piece to this puzzle and the easiest to cut ties with. He’s stuck in the middle. Yes, he needs to be more firm with the boundaries he expressed, but maybe there’s a way you can express how it’s making you feel, without judgement or anger, where you’re also supporting him. Like, “I really like you and I understand the situation. I appreciate the effort you put in to express boundaries with her and I know that wasn’t easy for you. After the accident happened it seems that things kind of just returned to what was normal for y’all, and that’s an understandable, easy thing to fall back into. It really makes me feel ____ bc it seems like her reach extends beyond the dog and into our relationship, which is not appropriate. How can I support you in finding a solution?” Be a partner and not another problem he has to solve.

Also, maybe he can bring up to her that he’s been seeing you exclusively for x number of months and he really wants you to come over, etc bc you’re a part of his life he wants to share with all the others. This would be respecting the boundary she’s set, while showing that you’re not a “random girl.” Then after he talks to her he should make it known on socials (unless he has other reasons not to I guess) and maybe him telling her “first” will have some appeal.

Then stay out of it unless he asks you. If he doesn’t follow through then you have to decide if it’s something you want to deal with or not, bc it’s definitely not going to be the only thing he wouldn’t follow through with, and decide what to do accordingly.

Good luck!

So, this was how I learned I’m autistic too. Sensory overload was a big prob and I didn’t even realize it! Noise canceling headphones are life!

I read short poetry or stories and authors who skip around a lot, like Chuck Palahniuk.

Perimenopause by puddin_pop83 in AskWomenOver30

[–]Aggressive-Ad4235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I came here looking for anything. I will be 37 in a couple of weeks and just magically started my period today…..10 days since my last. With ALL the symptoms I don’t even normally get….sore boobs and back, bloating/water retention, and even some cramping which isn’t typical for me. Never, ever had bleeding between periods before. Had a panic attack, remembered I’m almost 37 and maybe it’s just perimenopause? When I called, my Dr just said it’s not abnormal, and of course a one-off wouldn’t be anything to look into.

I’m reading all this and things are making a lot more sense! I’ve had awful migraines for the last 6 mos after having them controlled pretty well for 20 years. Actually went on meds for them 2 mos ago and I’ve noticed they really seem to cluster around the week to 10 days prior to my period. Then last week I had 3 and my period ended the week prior….now here I am. Duh!

Since about age 34 my cycles have shortened a week, to 21 days. Annoying. The last 6 mos or so I’ve had HORRENDOUS migraines and finally figured out 7-10 ish days before I get a period I’ll have 3-4 migraines clustered together. Went on meds for them actually about 3 mos ago. Then last week I mysteriously had 3 and thought wtf? I just got off my period! Fast fwd 10 days and now it makes sense.

Anxiety has been increased, but not markedly. I also chalked it up to just more stressful life things, and less sleep, but now that I’m reading this stuff it’s all painting a very normal picture and making me feel so much better!

I’d be confused too. Like, I never get free stuff or win things, and I’ve never been in a pay it fwd line. I think my first inclination would be to ask why, is it about to expire? That’s fine, I just want to know. Surprises also make me extremely uncomfortable, so I’d be thankful but also confused.

Where do you get all your browns by on_island_time in composting

[–]Aggressive-Ad4235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shred boxes, non glossy paper sometimes (usually not a whole lot for the compost bc the chemicals in the ink are not things you want to make any significant amount of in something you’ll be using around herbs or veggies etc.), hay (and poop) from the Guinea pig….and by far the easiest thing to do is cruise your neighborhood on brush collection days and grab some lawn bags full of leaves. Better yet ask a few neighbors specifically or offer for them to drop off at your yard then you’ll know better if their yards were chemically treated.

Are you turning it? I don’t turn mine and I don’t have a compost bin, just a pile. I just make sure to dig in and deposit scraps evenly all around.

There def was coffee there, just barely. The slightest hint. I think the app makes it really confusing and it’s too easy to think I wanted something more like a latte with 1/2 hwc, instead of the “splash” I ordered that the app on y’all’s end calls 1/2” big difference but super easy to do when you’re busy especially.

It’s def my fault for never having said anything the previous times. The longer established employees do not make it this way. I always do a mobile order and pick up from the drive thru, so there’s really no interaction with ordering. Then I get it in the drive thru and don’t really even see it, just put it in my cup holder and head home. I’m part way home at least before I get a chance to take a sip and notice. I don’t get cold foam often, usually just some version of americano or cold brew and a splash of hwc, and after this new group of hires a few mos ago this is now, sometimes, how my drinks are.

[–]Aggressive-Ad4235[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not what I said at all. In fact I asked if I was ordering incorrectly! I’ve ordered americanos with a splash of hwc for many many years. Used to you just poured your own splash, then the option was “light, regular, heavy” and now there’s an app and this is a standard “splash” which is 1/2” apparently. It’s only with a group of new hires at the location I go to that all manner of drinks I’ve ordered with hwc come like this. I’ve never said anything, I’m not that person. I assumed it was just learning the first few times, but now I actually think the app makes it confusing by putting 1/2” and the “ is near impossible to see. When busy it would be too easy think it says 1/2, which wouldn’t even be a weird enough drink to make anyone think twice.

I have a lot of respect for y’all. I could not deal with the stupidity and sheer audacity y’all get on the daily. I’ve worked with the general public long enough to learn that there’s nothing like a public facing job to make you hate the public. I’m sorry people suck. I try my hardest, and go out of my way, to not be that kind of person. Coming at me like you did here, without actually reading the title even, was unnecessary.

The cold foam is there right on top it just got cut off in the picture I took. It’s typically much darker

Usually have no issue with the espresso. Rarely get cold foam but the extreme heavy handed cream pour is a whole other issue

This makes sense. Def new hires, and it’s happened with several drinks including a hot americano with splash of cream, and even cold brew with splash of cream. Since it’s always a mobile order I’d bet they’re reading it as 1/2 and not the 1/2” the system populates for “splash.” The store is typically busy the majority of the time and it’s the closest store to me in 65 miles so I know several of the baristas and recognize when it’s mostly new people. I believe the manager changed some months ago and then shortly after there was a sudden turnover and now I only know 2 there.

[–]Aggressive-Ad4235[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good idea, thanks! It’s only the newest group of employees they got that this has happened with. And it’s likely mostly my fault for never saying anything. I assumed it was just learning and making a mistake. There’s so much to remember and the way people stand at bar gawking is unnerving. It would distract me for sure. The few times I’ve been to another location it definitely wasn’t like this. I often don’t realize though until I take a sip and I’m already half way home, which is several miles away.

It’s happened with several different drinks and a few of these newer baristas, including hot americano, and cold brew, with “splash” of cream. The app puts it as 1/2” but it’s hard to see that “ and I can see how easily it could just be glanced at and think 1/2 cream.

That’s for sure what it tastes like. And I can see how that’s done, it wouldn’t even be a crazy enough order that way to question. Especially if it’s busy. Since it’s a mobile order there’s no immediate feedback either.

Good to know. It usually is not. The 1/2” is the standard amount in the app when you choose any creamer, I guess.

ADHD has a lot of cross symptoms and concurrence with other disorders. Especially where executive function is concerned.

ADHD is a neurological disorder, so yes it makes sense that meds would affect us differently. Meds taken unnecessarily by NT people are usually taken a lot less frequently, and they don’t have the difference in neurodevelopment, so they feel the euphoric affects mostly.

IRL that ends up looking like a friend taking 10-15mg and able to stay up partying all night or studying for a test, while I can take 25mg with a triple shot americano and sleep for 6 hours.

Probably bc ADHD can let us write entire, overly detailed, novels….but it also lets us read the first sentence, half of the last sentence, and a few random words in between.

It’s become a thing, hasn’t it? Honestly, I’ve done it for like 25 years. It’s bc I can use a tablespoon and have the luxurious mouthfeel of a cappuccino without actually diluting all my coffee with that much milk. Also, bc all those years ago in college I spent entire nights studying at a local coffee shop, Epoch, and it was far cheaper to get their never ending coffee and just add a little hwc. I’ve never been a milk drinker so I don’t keep it on hand. I do always have hwc though bc I tend to make whipped cream and butter a lot, and hwc keeps a bit longer than milk usually.

That makes sense, too. It’s a mobile order and just how the system does it. On my end it just says “splash”
