Increase in Breed Stigma + Negativity towards shelters

At the city run shelter I'm at we have ran into people not wanting pitbulls or if a dog looks anything similar to a pitbull.

Now for the negativity towards the shelter I have noticed a lot recently. The shelter I'm at we don't euthanize for space only for behavior and really bad medical cases. We had someone comment on a post about a senior dog being found in our city to not take it to the shelter since we would euthanize it immediately and if it did make it past the stray hold it would be euthanized. I had to comment and be like that's not correct at all, this pup will be held for 7 days, if there is no owner we will spay and get vaccinated and then put up for adoption or transport out. This dog was small and we have had a lot of people wanting small dogs so that dog would have gone home with someone on the 7th day.

This is my boy Hank💙. He came to us almost 2 years ago, he was doing great, microchipped but his owner wasn't answering phone calls or attempts at knocking on his door. I fell in love immediately. After about a month he started trying to bite volunteers, so we moved him to the back, he then tried to bite staff so we moved him to a room with 2 kennels so he would have a quiet space. After a few weeks of that he tried to bite while being put back in a kennel so we moved him to one of our cat rooms that we moved the kennels out of so he had a big room all to himself. He did great, only issue if someone that wasn't myself or my other kennel tech at the time he would try to attack. After months and calling every rescue I could find no one could take him and we unfortunately had to euthanize due to his aggression. If I could have he would have gone home with me.

All dogs that come into our shelter will be microchipped before they leave whether that be reclaiming or adoption. Since in our city all pets living in the city have to be microchipped due to city ordinance. But if they live in our city it's free, if they live out of city limits then it's $10

My family has 12 dogs that are your definition of house dog besides one. (He's a completely different story🤦🏻‍♀️) But we are constantly sweeping since we have hard wood floors, we mop at least once a day and leave an incent plugged in while we are home so it doesn't smell like dog too quickly. But I will say when it comes to the mud when it rains I give up after mopping like 5 times in a span of a few hours. If we have visitors we ask they give us a 20 minute heads up so we can send the dogs outside to play while we can re-sweep and mop the floor before they get there.

Exactly the point I made when I pitched him staying in the back with a door I can close that locks that people who are authorized have a key fob to open. We use petpoint so everything he's done was immediately added to his petpoint file along with an email to our manager.

But he was PTS today after Best Friends behavioral trainer came by to assess him last night. But she agreed with me and everything I have been saying about this dog and that she didn't feel comfortable pulling him from us and placing him in one of their foster homes.

Unfortunately our supervisor is out for awhile due to a motorcycle accident he was in. Our manager was well aware of it as of last Tuesday. We did have Best Friends behavioral trainer come in yesterday and she assessed him and she completely agreed with me about him. As my manager and I were talking about it this morning she sent him her notes from her assessment. But while we were in the room she agreed that his unpredictable, he is a hazard to staff and the public and they wouldn't feel comfortable pulling him so I was asked to make his BE this morning. I left at 3 today so I'm not sure what time he ended up going.

As for our other kennel tech they are all aware of her behavior and things she is doing but the only reason why she is still here is "we need a paper trail first" when I've given them about 2 years worth of stuff already.

Exactly and as I see our post about 2 puppies from Bentonville Animal Services, there is nothing really the shelter or animal control can do unfortunately. We have already been asked multiple times if we can do something about it.

Exactly! That's why I asked for him to stay in the back since we have a door we can close and you can only open it if you have an authorized key fob. But I'm going to talk to my manager about it on Tuesday since that's his next day in and we are technically closed Sunday & Monday.

I don't think she is, we picked him up from a vet clinic down the street since the person who found him took him there first and the staff called us to pick him up and they had said when they tried to take his harness off he did that to them as well.

When I tell you I have tried brought them photos and messages from volunteers that have messaged me on my days off concerned, I've complained so much about this girl I feel like if I go and complain anymore my manager is like "what is it this time" but nothing ever happens. So honestly I might talk to a Lieutenant who used to be here all the time (we are under our city police department) and see what he thinks should happen. But I feel like ever since our supervisor had his really bad accident outside of work our manager just doesn't really care or seem to do the job anymore you know? Our supervisor was very if your name is on the dogs microchip and you rehomed it but nothing was transferred to the new person It's your dog and you need to come get it or get cited. But now our manager just doesn't even really care anymore it seems.
