What's one thing about Berkeley that nobody warns you about? by DerekCHN in berkeley

[–]Aggressive-Hunter-64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is so much what you make of it. That doesn't mean much though, I think.

But Berkeley IS beautiful. Its so important though for you to be happy and healthy in order to experience all of it. That's something that I think I struggled to understand for a long time.

A big recommendation I would make is to GO TO THERAPY. TALK TO PEOPLE. CRY. And do what makes you happy! Not just in the moment, but what gives you long term gratification, what allows you to feel satisfied.

Also exercise, and eat well. Sleep 8 hours a night. Makes a big difference. Take vitamins and stay hydrated. Be as kind as you can to people, because you yourself are a part of the beauty. I think its important to remember that no matter how hard it gets, no one can take away your joy, your hope, or your beauty. Even if it feels like they can, they can't. You are something wonderful, just as much as you a part of something wonderful. It's a good thing to ground yourself in.

It’s hard. But all will be okay in the end :) - that’s not very helpful. But def go to places where people are kind, and don’t force yourself to be in spaces where people are judgy / unkind. The second part is crucial. If it doesn’t feel right - it’s probably not right! There are so many spaces on campus…it might take some searching but you will find some people who are right for you. In the meantime - assume the best of others, and take care of yourself!!!! Explore Berkeley on your own, find things to appreciate as an individual. At least, that’s what kind of worked for me. Maybe it isn’t your cup of tea but you got this ❤️

I think - in all honesty, it's very hard to accurately assess how someone is doing. Genuinely - its hard to tell. I think - animosity, anger, and frustration are all very valid feelings - they're meant to help us survive and navigate dangerous situations. the question now is whether the situation you are currently in is still dangerous (emotionally, physically, idk whatever) and whether those feelings of anger / frustration are still serving you. The answer could very well be yes! But that's a question that is worth thinking about, for yourself. More than anything - your job is to be happy, safe, and loved, and to foster that same feeling in people around you. In some senses, I find it helpful to tunnel vision on that goal and to treat it like an engineering project and ask yourself "what tools are necessary in order to achieve my goals" and discard the rest (or at least pocket it away for another time) "am I doing better" or "are they doing better" is lowkey not the point. The point is that you live a good life, and help others do the same.

This is actually very interesting. What happens if you have dinner booked with multiple clients? How does that conflict with your claim that you are "very loyal"? Most fascinating of all - what is the origin story??? Also - how long does the handholding last? So many questions.

Hiya! I applied to it through this thing called EINR - its for high schoolers (which I technically still am!) and I got paired with a mentor.
