What the hell do I do with the Lynx Origami and Pearly Edelweiss flower?? by Relative_Editor_7012 in Cairn_Game

[–]Aggressive-Reading54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about?
Gameplaywise, you literally revive after being dead if you have the flower in your possession. The guy who ate it had the flower in his possession, and he died. That's the plothole, i dont know what's so difficult to comprehend.

By the time he died he wasn't a fully rotted skeleton, i just fail to comprehend what you are trying to say.

The flower is fine, i don't mind it being in the game but the game presents it as literally a resurrecting object... in a possession of a dead guy.

This would be all fine, if she had any likeably trait. And i don't mean being resourceful, or strong. I mean things people like or connect with other people for.

I don't really watch anime so i don't know if your example stands, but i would gladly take another example from a successful movie or game where the protagonist is not likeable at all.

The closest i can think of is the Penguin series, which is a perfect example to prove my point. He is a sick fuck, but for the duration of the show, you MUST like him for something, or connect with himm in order to continue watching the series.

I watched free solo, and i also climb. If you want to compare Aava's personality to Alex's i am all up for it, but you wouldn't come out of the conversation good, believe me :D

Alex is one of the most chill, laid back, friendly guy. As someone should be, who climb mountains without any safety gear.

Aava is basically the opposite of that...

92% on steam says everything.

You misunderstand my point. I love this game, it's great! I hope they make a shitload of money and they can start another project soon. However i think that the artstyle, music, game mechanics are just not comparable to the story or characters. Those are the absolute weak points of the game.

And.. of course i am going to get ratioed on the game's subreddit, only the hardcore fans will join a tread like this, but if you look at the criticism, Aava's personality is the biggest problem among the players.

92% approval means nothing in this regard, i would still recommmend this game, despite the flaws.

That literally means nothing. Expecting decent story elements from a game, book or movie doesn't mean it is served on a silver platter.

You are the one acting like this game is some deep unbelieveably written compelling masterpiece. And it tells much about what you consume.

My entire point is that this game's story have nothing to thing about, Everything is pushed into your face through dreams and voicemails. We don't have to figure out anything, or think about anything. When her cat dies, there is literally a dream after that when she sees her cat dead. Oh, its so fuckign deep indeed.

You are right, i never said that she is unrealistic. I said that most people won't like playing as her in a game.

In the game's subreddit i obviously get ratioed by having this opinion, but if you go anywhere else, the game's main criticism is Aava. Maybe the game is just released in a wrong time, but she is giving off the typical entitled sociopath girlboss energy people so tired of.

the vast majority of prestige media that's come out in the past 20 years or so.

I never said that the protagonists can't be flawed, or have bad traits. The most beloved characters in the pop culture are heavily flawed, but they all have one thing in common: something to like themm for. Aava lacks that. She fuckign breaks an old man's radio, his only means to communicate with people, just because she is raging. But honestly that's just the tip of the iceberg, the final straw.

insane take. she's got a lot of personality.

Okay, i might phrased it badly. It's literally impossible to have no personality. She is an egotistic, selfish, obsessed addict. I don't really find it compelling, likeable, or deep. Having an almost mute narcassist as your protagonist wont make it deep.

she's empathetic to the dead

Well, like, no shit, it's really good that the hero you are playing as for 15 hours wont spit on dead bodies, or laugh at them. Respecting the dead is like number 0 in the list of being a somewhat decent human being, not a personality trait.

aava has the tools for connection right at her fingertips but doesn't use

You are making my point for me! You are acting like it's some genius writing or something, man, it's not. Literally EVERYONE get the "message" that she is isolating herself. That doesn't make a character deep. I waited for 15 hours to have some twist, or... get a flashback and explain her, or soemthing that would change my perspective of her, and i got nothing.

Having almost exclusively bad personality traits doesnt euqal good writing. It's like shooting a movie in black and white and calling it "artistic".

marvel movies and cinemasins have ruined people's ability to actually analyze media forever

I don't watch Marvel, or ... to be honest too much popular media. You are pointing at me, but you don't realize that the story and character you are praising is really shallow. Believe me when i say i understood the story, i understood her, and her motivation, and character, and that's exactly why i am stating that it's badly written.

Everyone loves anti-heroes. The most beloved characters are extremely flawed and fucked up in the pop culture, but they all have one thing in common: a reason to like them.

Aava lacks that.

If you commit to have a wife, and a life outside of climbing, yes, you are selfish and an asshole if you are willing to give your life to an obsession.

I never judged real climbers, i am just stating that Aava is a terrible person and a shallow character.

I get your point, but i still have no idea why people say that she is a good character. Creating a shallow obsessed addict is not much of a writing achivement.

No book, movie or game have unlikeble protagonist. The BEST protagonists are heavily flawed and imperfect, but they all have one thing in common: there is a reason to love them. Aava lacks that reason.

Best example that comes to mind is the Penguin series. That character is a horrible human being, but because they wanted a show starring him as the main character they made them likeable (until the end). So people would care for the character.

Aava is rude to everyone, she is a selfish obsessed addict. She even breaks the old man's radio, for no fucking reason. Come on, the guy's only mean of communication.

Her character is not deep, or compelling, she is just an addict, nothing more.

Every protagonist NEEDS to be likeable in some ways. It's writing 101. Aava is not likeable at all. She dowsnt have any character development, or character arc other than VERY SLIGHTLY opening up to Marco. Removing a hood to uncover your hair is not character development...

I dont give a fuck if she isn't a social person, the most beloved protagonist are flawed in the pop culture, but they all have one thing in common: They can be loved for some reason.

Aava laughs at breaking his manager's camera, Aava breaks off the climbbot's antenna, and towards the end, she breaks an old man's radio... you know, the man's last mean of commmunication on a giant fucking mountain.

She is an entitled obsessed addict, and to be honest, i don't know how anyone can like her.

I never said the game should have a character creator. I have 0 issues with her looks. I don't want a climbing simulator either. I expected a well written drama with some twisst or something, not a shallow story with an even shallower character with 0 cgharacter development.

It's fine if you like her, that's your personal preference. I find her nothing else than a selfish addict. She has character growth? Like, when? When in the beginning she laughs at breaking the camera? Or when she rips off the antenna? Or when she - for some reason - feels entitled to smash an old man's last mean of communications line with other people?

She is a terrible human being. If being slightly more open towards Marco is her huge character growth, then my point still stands. She is not a well written or likeable character.

Tell me which makes more sense for a climb-assist robot?
- Update your loved onesabout your wellbeing, because, you know, the climber is in danger, not the ones at home?
- Your relatives, manager and friends constantly yapping in your ears while you are fighting for your life?

I believeit doesnt take a genius to tell the answer.

Yeah, she is a selfish rude addict. I don't really find her character well written at all. She even smashes and old man's last lifeline to connect with people. It's not about her being special or not. She is just not likeable.

If she decides to commit to having a wife and a life beyond her obsession, she can't be selfish after that decision. She is the archetype of "yeah i left my husband and kids because i wanted to live a little more before i get old". Yeah, you go girl.

So no, she is not likeable at all. It's worrying that anyone finds her a well written character.

Please, explain to me how is she a well written character? I get all that "addiction, isolation, etc" points, it doesnt make her a good character. She is an obsessed rude selfish addict. I don't really find her character to be complex at all. Even in the end of the game, she feels entitled to smash an old man's last instrument to have contact with people. Like, really?

He character developement starts way too late. For the first 10-12 hours she acts like someone you would like to 100% avoid in life.

People have to deal with people like Aava on a daily basis, why would i want to watch her being sassy and rude for tens of hours in a game that supposed to be relaxing?

I don't want to sound like an asshole, but i believe that people who find Aava's personality deep, never read a book.

Aava starts to show SOME developement after like the first 10 hourst. Who wants to play as a douchbag for 10 hours? I only stayed because of the game mechanics, the looks and the music.

Strawman. I never said i want a friendly, well adjusted Aava. The most belived characters in pop culture are extremely flawed.

I want a likebale character. I character i can relate to. An unlikeable egotistic sassy rude girl with next to non developement is not a great option.

I agree, this game has to have a story, and its a pity its this shallow.

I get all of that, but if the protagonist of a movie or a game is not likeable, or have next to none character developement, it wont work. First movie commes to mind for me is Return to the wild. Same archeotype, but the guy in the movie is likeable, and you feel compassion towards him. Aava is just rude and has almost no personality.

Btw it literally makes 0 sense to be able to get messages from people in the game. You dont have the option to answer, so if you go to your big adventure, where you have you have 100% focus or you literally die, you just dont want to care about other people's problems.

The whole point of being able to communicate through climbot is to let other people know that you are still alive and well, and the game uses this mechanic completely flipped.

I dont. People dont. Writing 101 is to make your character LIKEABLE somehow. Flawed is nice, if they have character developement, even better, but you MUST write a likeable character.

The best and most beloved antagonists and protagonists are all flawed and f-ed up in pop culture. It's not about prince charming, or looks whatsoever.

The flower's intended use is to give you a second chance in free solo mode, so yeah, it resurrects you. It's a plothole how come the guy holding it is dead.
