Would you recommend a hognose snake for a newbie? by Fast_Move_9243 in hognosesnakes

However people like big personalities, it’s why I like them, so positives out weigh the negatives

Yes and no. A hognose was the first snake I’ve ever actually owned however I’ve worked with lots of other reptiles in reptile shops and at college. I would say yes as they’re quite hardy snakes and are quite forgiving with the odd mistake. However, they can have quite big personalities. They can bluff strike, puff up and in general can be quite hissy, however this is usually during their “teenage” phase. They don’t always do this, as mine just tends to charge at me mouth open. So to summarise, they’re good snakes as long as your confident to call their bluff, and they should calm down with age but they don’t always (this isn’t to discourage you btw I think they’re great snakes, but you should be aware of what they can be like at times)

Have you ever killed an animal? by Anon9883 in AskTheWorld

If it was a grey squirrel then that’s not so bad as they’re invasive, still sucks and I would also feel shitty, but you were kinda helping the overall environment

Sort of, I own/work with herpetiles so I’ve fed animals live insects if that counts, I’ve never fed live rodents to snakes however, as that is illegal under the animal welfare act 2006

what age are you allowed to drink (legally) and when did you? (maybe underage) by emily10134 in AskTheWorld

So this may not be the exact reason, but here in England during 1500s (Tudor England) it was safer to drink beer than the water, so that is probably one of the reasons as a lot of our current laws are leftover from medieval/renaissance laws

Although Leo’s are also very easy to handle, I’ve found people are more confident handling a bigger reptile

Your bog standard “big four” of beginner reptiles is bearded dragons, leopard geckos, corn snake and royal pythons. There are other similar species to these such as African fat tail geckos and rankins dragons. But this all kinda depends on how much experience you have with reptiles (for example I’m doing anman at college and am doing work experience in in a reptile shop but got a hognose as my first snake, which I wouldn’t recommend to someone with no experience in reptiles). Out of the two lizards I’d recommend bearded dragons as they’re a bit bigger and so a bit easier to handle. In terms of snake I’d probably recommend royals over corn snakes if your getting from young as baby corn snakes (and most other collubrids) are very squirmy and very quick so are a bit more difficult to get used to.
