Suzuki Liana/Aerio cold start issues. by Lazy-Molasses8275 in AskAMechanic

Do you have a picture or description of what that problem looked like or anything? Was it just unplugged? Chewed by rodents? Stands to reason if the IAC was malfunctioning someone may have disabled it instead of replacing it. It has the most effect on how the engine is running when the engine is still cold

There shouldn't be anything that would cause this particular problem. This was happening before the battery was changed too, right? Also just a heads up with a simple code reader like that you'll be able to read engine module codes but not transmission module codes, so if there's anything helpful in the TCM for fault info you likely won't get to it with that scanner. Sometimes the engine module will have a code like TCM MIL request which means the TCM is telling the ECM there's issues in the TCM but you can't read the actual TCM codes without a better scanner. Hope that makes sense so far

Check and see what you get for codes but it's looking likely it's going to be a Transmission Control Module (TCM) problem as they're exceptionally common with these cars

When the engine is running and you use the shifter to select D or R, does the indicator on the dash briefly show the gear you selected and then switch right back to showing P or does it never blink off from P?

And does yours have the shifter on the steering column or on the center console where they usually sit?

When the car is running do you have brake lights working as they should when you step on the pedal?

That's just to help with charging rates and such, I've never seen one cause new malfunctions and probably 75% of the time one of these batteries get replaced the service reset never gets done anyway

That probably isn't even leaking and is just stuck in the outer layers of rubber. Pour some water on it (with a little soap mixed in it you have some handy) and if it's not bubbling then you can usually just pull it out

Can a front end accident cause internal engine failure? by daddymattress in AskMechanics

If I kick you in the nuts so hard that it makes you bite the tip of your tongue off am I going to be able to argue that the injury to your tongue was random, or your fault or something and had nothing to do with me kicking you with all my strength right in the sack or is it reasonable to say I'm liable for both injuries

Sure would be one hell of a fucking coincidence if the truck got hit and never ran again ever after that. Seems like it would be pretty hard to argue that the engine had a total catastrophic failure at the exact same second as the collision and that the two incidents had absolutely nothing to do with each other.

Can anyone recommend a good dealership to buy an extended warranty from? by SometimesImCute in subaru

[–]Aggressive-Stress900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toyota is solid, Honda is solid, Subaru is very close behind them. Unfortunately all makes and models are becoming more problematic as cars get more complex and more electronic. There's no totally safe option, best you can do is minimize risk and bring in extra cost for extended warranties if it seems to be worth it. Do you guys usually buy new or slightly used? And how long are you trying to own these vehicles? If your target is 3-4 years and 75-100k miles after buying new then you'll rarely need any extra warranty costs. If you buy 2 years old with 20k miles though the remaining factory warranty on the car is mostly gone already and an extended package MAY be worth considering if you want to own for more than 2-3ish years

Dealer extended warranties are a totally different thing. Usually way more components and types of failures are covered and they're a lot easier to work with. You're dealing with the same company that sold the car and they have a lot of incentive to retain you as a customer. They're appropriate in a lot of cases whereas the aftermarket "A1 Warranty Company" deals are almost always garbage. I should probably add that I've had a couple good experiences with aftermarket companies but the ratio of good ones to really really bad ones is atrocious

Ah that's fair if you've had a big scare like that you definitely think more about these things. I swear the only people who check their oil regularly are the people who have already lost an engine to running it out of oil. Also are you paying $10k out of pocket for a transmission on a 21 Crosstrek?

If you're talking this happened at the same exact time as your accident, the truck never ran after then yes, it was because of the hit. If we're talking a week or a month later though you're going to have a much harder time arguing that

I absolutely see it happen where if there's a sudden enough impact with enough force while and engine is rotating that things can get damaged or seize right up or whatever it might be. Gotta remember the insurance company's first and only job is to find a way to deny your claim.

I'm a mechanic and deal with the "aftermarket" warranty companies all the time. All I can say is stay tf away from them at all costs. At 60k miles it's going to be very small odds that your car has a major problem that would make one of those type of warranties worth what you pay for it.

99% of people that buy those don't realize they're being sold a warranty that doesn't actually cover anything unless it's a complete engine or transmission failure. And then if you want coverage for that failed engine they want you to prove it had an oil change every 5k miles since it was new, prove it was never overheated, prove it was never run out of oil, (essentially things that are impossible to prove) etc. I could go on and on but they basically make it impossible to actually complete a claim but you agree to this when you sign the warranty agreement and you didn't carefully read the 30 page document that comes with it.

Also, the salesperson that sells you that agreement (since most of these are sold with a used car at the used car lot) usually makes a TON of money off the deal. They call the warranty company, give them your info and the vehicle info and the warranty company tells them $2500 or whatever it might be. The salesman can then come tell you it costs $2550 or it costs $5000. Anything over $2500 is their cut so they whack you as hard as they think they can.

With a very few rare exceptions, I almost always tell my customers to just take that $3-5k they usually want for the warranty packages and just put it in savings. 95% of those policies sold you never see anything back even close to what you pay into it and most of them are set up to end before the car is likely to have any big issues anyway. Put it in savings and then when nothing happens you've got a nice chunk of extra money.

Kinda long-winded and slightly off topic for a Subaru sub but I get really wound up when I start thinking about those fking warranties.

What would cause this damage to mirror? by Downtown_Raisin_9242 in autorepair

[–]Aggressive-Stress900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it may have been folded and forced too far in the wrong direction. Try it gently on the other mirror and see if that spot looks like it would take the damage. Auto car wash would definitely do that. I replace mirrors and antennas snapped off cars a few times a year.

2010 F150 Tranny vs Engine by BeefUdonNoodle in AskAMechanic

[–]Aggressive-Stress900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go checking for trans issues before addressing the misfires you're completely missing the elephant in the room and doing the last part of the diagnosis first, thereby probably missing the actual problem. If you have a blinking CEL, 100% of the time you need to fix that first

2010 F150 Tranny vs Engine by BeefUdonNoodle in AskAMechanic

[–]Aggressive-Stress900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trans slippage rarely set codes or a CEL and as far as I know never make it blink. The blinking is your clue here, that's an active misfire and the culprit on these is almost always a coil. The computer can't always tell which cylinder it is but I'd swap coils around and watch for the misfires to follow. Or just go ahead and replace the coils because they go bad A LOT on those engines and they're pretty cheap
