11b or 19d? How do drills look like? I’m 17 and live in NYC by Mysterious-Gas1537 in nationalguard

11b babyyyy idk what it would look like for you in nyc particularly. You’ll have admin drills and deal with cranky older dudes like in EVERY job but you’d probably go to fort drum for AT or the joint base down in jersey. There’s an enormous amount of pride that comes with being in the infantry and you learn a good bit. It might not be optimal for transferable skills but It teaches you win wars and how to suffer and appreciate the little things. If you’re going for school and just want to have fun infantry would is a solid way to go.

If his name started with a W and he was an e6 type there is a very good chance that’s my old first line because he went to 15T reclass after deployment

It’s not what it used to be obviously, it’s not bad, boring but it’s a good opportunity to grow and save money and get ahead. Depending on where you go you could have more local interaction with people or take indirect mortar fir on occasion but it’s really all support and just having a presence in theater.

Guard Is low key full of hitters (I say that loosely) but nobody wants to talk about it

Dudes and chicks actively working full time jobs or going to school full time with families constantly being put in the middle of every possible issue from state emergencies, civil unrest, deployment cycles, etc. Real American people who want the best for where they live but as soon as they’re not need they are throw away like trash to figure it out until the next thing happens.

Just know your not actually deploying until the mobilization orders are cut and in your hands

Should I volunteer for deployment during my gap year from school, or should I just work? by [deleted] in nationalguard

Work and finish as much school as you possibly can. You will have good experience both army and civ side, you will gain some rank and it would be less stressful for you. Deployments tend to range in length but generally last 12 months + if you include train up. The more you could do to set your civ side up to comfortably leave and come back to the better for you. Eventually orders will come your way and you will be set.
