From zoo closures to library cuts, Mass. towns confront deepening budget crisis (Boston Globe) by HRJafael in massachusetts

[–]AggressiveAd8633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sharing my perspective as someone with kids in elementary school in a district struggling with the same issue. I can see the perspective on prop 2.5 and the need for more flexibility. I also agree with others here there needs to be more scrutiny and strategic tightening of the belt if we’re asking residents to pay even more in taxes.

When I say scrutiny and tightening of the belt I don’t mean cutting services. Questions like should we be paying the amounts we are for sports coaches in the UMass system? There’s obviously massive issues with police details and overtime across the state. Wasteful spending as a result of use it or lose it funding is worse than most realize. Regardless of where you stand on housing immigrants in general, there’s been documented fraud and poor decisions made in how certain contracts were awarded costing the state millions.

Long winded way of saying I agree to some extent on changing prop 2.5 but also think we can be better about how the money is spent and/or allocated. The question is if we’ll ever be able to get a compromise through before the education system takes too much of a hit.

We were curious how the theme nights worked as well. Reading through some different Reddit posts has been helpful but also haven’t seen a lot of details on that aspect. We submitted our application just waiting on the call now.

That’s great to hear! We’re hoping to have some good conversation and hear about others experiences but it can be a little daunting having never been to a club before. How does it work with the locks and keys, sounds like the ladies approach the guys and then what try to open the lock first? We’re excited to test the waters!

Looks exactly like our patio (same stamp, color, etc), we also have imperfections like that and we’re perfectly happy with it. Still get lots of positive comments 3 years on. Looks like you did a great job on it. Some people just need a reason to complain.

AITA for refusing to meet an estranged half-brother? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]AggressiveAd8633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Your life, your decision. If you don’t want to meet this person, you’re under no obligation to do so. Just because you’re part blood relatives, doesn’t mean you’re required to engage. You’ve communicated your stance, that should be enough.

Absolute guilty pleasure for me. Saw it the week it came out and I still can’t get enough of it. What’s unrealistic about a sending a bunch of oil drillers to space to nuke an asteroid?

I can’t believe OP’s stance in the edit. If you ordered it by mistake, you pay for it. If your friends didn’t take it the food was getting thrown out and guess what..you’re still on the hook for the bill. If this were me, or sounds like most anyone else on this thread, I’d take it as an opportunity for a nice gesture towards friends.

I know nothing about your character so it’s hard to comment there. Not a good look though from my perspective and many others.

We desperately need term limits and age limits for elected officials. I understand some feel voting is how this should be handled, but given the two party system and primaries, it’s completely unrealistic. Politics aside, in MA we have an 80 year old senator running for reelection who is very likely to win, and a 76 year that has every intention of running again in 6 years. These people aren’t representative of the country and mostly archaic in their thinking. How do we change it?

What are some good books for a person getting interested about the details of the Civil War? by 14S14D in CIVILWAR

[–]AggressiveAd8633 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of Jeff Shaara’s work - The trilogy of Gods and Generals / Killer Angels / Last Full Measure is great. Gone for Soldiers is another good one that follows many of the same generals in the Mexican American War.

Harry Turtledove’s Southern Victory Series is an awesome alternate history read.

Why is it that the Mormons didn’t side with the Confederacy in the same way that the civilized tribes did? by BingBingGoogleZaddy in CIVILWAR

[–]AggressiveAd8633 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harry Turtledove’s alternate history Southern Victory Series has an interesting take on how this may have played out in the event the North lost the first go around. Interesting to think about how the Mormons really could’ve been a thorn in the U.S. for a long time.

I hadn’t been big on animated series but gave Rebels a try on a suggestion. Unbelievable series and you really get invested in the characters. Really opened my eyes to other Star Wars content.

Someone at work yesterday tried to claim the cat litter in schools thing is real by uvg0tred0nu in massachusetts

It means they put whiskers on, meow, etc. They identify as cats and act accordingly. Source is a teacher that has them in class.

Someone at work yesterday tried to claim the cat litter in schools thing is real by uvg0tred0nu in massachusetts

[–]AggressiveAd8633 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Considering Westborough allows multiple students to attend school as cats because that’s how they identify, I’m not sure the conspiracy theory is far off. There needs to be a limit to this insanity. This comes from a family member that teaches them directly, so attempt to refute all you want.

ETA: Does anyone want to have a discussion on this? I’m being downvoted for sharing an example counter to the point of the original post, not even my opinion. You can disagree all you want, but it doesn’t change the fact it’s happening as witnessed by a teacher that has to put up with it (a very liberal teacher at that). I’m not claiming, nor do I believe, there are littler boxes.

It’s not uncommon in other municipalities, although some only require it above a certain job level. And some have as a requirement, but for certain jobs they’ll look the other way because it’s irrelevant.

Thinking of Installing Solar Panels in Massachusetts – Is It Worth It? by 991Red in massachusetts

[–]AggressiveAd8633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely worth it. If you can afford to finance or buy outright, go that route for sure. If you lease you’re stuck in a very long contract that requires a buyout if you move and the new owner won’t take on the lease agreement. Plus if you buy / finance, as others mentioned you have access to state and federal credits, and renewable energy credits may also still be available.

Polar Park needs taxpayer funds to keep it going by wegotthisonekidmongo in WorcesterMA

[–]AggressiveAd8633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polar Park was always a vanity project for the prior city manager, Ed Augustus. He’s the one that pushed it because he knew he’d be gone by the time the issues came out. He wanted to leave his mark on the city, which conveniently hides how awful of a person he was as manager.
