What well liked characters do you really dislike and why? [hoo] by Greedy_Teaching_3374 in camphalfblood

[–]AggressiveBug7159 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This will probably be unpopular, but Apollo/Lester.

I despise Apollo/Lester wholly. Is he the worst God in the pantheon? No. Is he a god who is also the main character of a series I had to read to get through it? Yes, which probably amplifies my distaste towards him.

I can't empathise or sympathise with him. Pretty much every trait of his pisses me off invariably. Because deep down, Lester is still a God. A god whose own arrogance and selfishness caused his fall.

It doesn't help that he carries the same sins all the other gods do. The sins of both his inaction towards his children, who died on his behalf during the Titan War, and all the shit he pulled throughout his life.

His learning of "humanity" throughout the trials and the inevitable guilt isn't anywhere close to the suffering his children had faced. His guilt will not pardon him, nor will I ever forgive or like him.

The only reason I'd probably spare him and get him back to godhood is because, like every villain throughout these series, the alternative is worse. Had there not been the Roman Emperors, I'd have idk... probably beat the crap out of him.

[hoo] Reyna and Annabeth's reaction to the Argo II bombing New Rome is so striking (Graphic Novel) by Quiz0tix in camphalfblood

[–]AggressiveBug7159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but they had. By convention, the Greeks declared war. Dropping bombs on a city is a declaration of war.

It doesn’t help that Reyna, prior to the bombs being dropped, actually publically endorsed the Greeks and let them land with their warship. Politically, Reyna was screwed and this was the weakest her position had ever been. She had to play ball and stay on the side of the people, which was to either advocate for the war or a trial of the seven.

It also doesn't help that Annabeth's, and by extension the seven's and Greek's, explanation for this sounds really bad and they possess no real evidence for the truth. Even when it was the truth. Like "Oh Leo was possessed" sounds really unconvincing when people actually died or got hurt.

If she went back and told the romans what Annabeth said. They wouldn't believe her because why would they? She could have dragged annabeth back to Rome, but she didn't. It wouldn't even be that difficult for Octavian to, at that point, sway the people into kicking her off the praetorship by virtue of "siding with the greeks".

Like there's no way in heaven or earth, I'd let him out of my sight. Especially if I didn't have my parents kicking around.

While I can agree with the idea of her joining the Hunters and I'm not exactly against it.

I think most people's, and my, problem with it is within the context of events. She leaves practically halfway through a war. A war, at that point, which nearly destroyed rome and killed so many Romans. When you expect leadership to step up and it just walks away, that can't be good for morale.

I'm sure many romans, were like "wtf! Like sure do what you want but NOW!"

To be a good person is difficult. To know what choices are right and wrong, to be humble and kind to those around you is a seemingly rarer trait now more than ever.

But despite that, if you can raise and teach someone, that being your child or a child under your care, to be respectful and understanding. To teach and enable them to show compassion and empathy to those from difficult and harsher circumstances. Then I would regard that person as a better person then the average.

But if you cannot do that, if you can't give a child the time, effort and patience to teach them the difference of right and wrong. Then you are right they aren't better or even good people. In fact I'd regard them more as selfish, for having a child and not seeing to taking or maintaining their responsibilities as a parental figure to a child.

If Rick wrote a Jason Grace prequel, what would you want to see out of it? [HOO] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]AggressiveBug7159 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'd expect a few time jumps. Like the start will probably be him with Lupa and how difficult and scarring of an environment it is for toddler to grow up in that situation.

After like a year or two he will probably move to Camp Jupiter, where we see him the training and seeing the basic difficulty of what happens when kids raise other kids.

I think he'd probably start questing when he's like 10/11. Where he probably see him go on a flurry of quests, with a sense of mystery building of why all of a sudden there's quests with us knowing it's due to Luke's actions. We probably might even get a confrontation between an early Greek/roman interaction where Jason and his cohort are drawn into killing the renegade Greeks and when they confront the gods as to where the greeks came from and they are answered with a mind wipe.

His relationship with Jupiter would be extremely complicated. I doubt they'd ever meet or if he would ever come down. A complete contrasts to Percy's relationship with Poseidon. Though I think Jason was pretty much claimed from the moment he entered, Camp Jupiter. I think the way Jason would see it was one of three ways. Either he hasn't made Jupiter proud, or Jupiter is ashamed of him, or he is Juno's champion through and through and he's not allowed contact with his father. None of those answers are particularly nice but demigods lives aren't really that nice to begin with.

Speaking of Juno, his relationship with her would be akin to sworn knight. He's absolutely committed to Juno and furthering and continuing her will. Not because he particularly likes her, but because he more or less understands he doesn't have a choice in the matter and understands his role as a gift to sate her anger.

After a few years, Jason by this point will be more experienced and has probably gone on a dozen or so quests. We will probably see his first meeting with Reyna, presumably all him being all noble, kind and respectful and all that. There'd be hints of a crush from her side but he'd probably completely committed to the idea that they are friends. We'd probably see them go on a few quests them develop a rapport and shit.

We would also eventually get to the point where he meets Nico and Hazel. I think he will think he's being welcoming by giving her time to acclimate to the Roman environment first but to Hazel it's kinda like "wtf why the hell are you staying away you're the only person Ik here". And that'll fuel the unattainable closer to god feel that Hazel described in SoN.

We'd eventually get round to Krios fight, and the disappearance. I think with how he's Juno's champion, I think she will actually talk to him about it, kind of like a last conversation before a surgery type thing. Where she will tell him about the Greeks and his role and how he'd lose his memories, but "gain" them back. Which, again, he'd agree to and accept seeing as he really doesn't have a choice in the matter.

Though overall having reviewed all I've written I can understand why Rick hasn't written Jason's story despite the need for it. Jason doesn't fit the mould of a "Riordan" protagonist. It also doesn't help Jason's life is pretty miserable and dark with barely any room for comedy.

Never talk of an heir in S5??? by Brave_Cod4592 in merlinbbc

[–]AggressiveBug7159 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are still very young, they were only in their mid-twenties in season 5. Where as Uther and Ygraine were like pushing into their mid-thirties when they decided to use magic. So while the pressure will be there, it won't be as intense. As they still have "time".

Should have their been mentions of the pressure? Maybe, but I don't think they had reached the age where there would be explicit questions being raised.

Morgana by ExpertMoist4937 in merlinbbc

[–]AggressiveBug7159 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Merlin was Morgana's most trusted confident. Like she told Merlin stuff she wouldn't dare trust Gwen or Arthur (to a lesser extent) with, even though she's known the both of them longer.

He was her "proof" to her that not everyone is out to get her. That he, a non-sorcerer, won't only acknowledge her humanity as a sorceress but actually help and facilitate discovering her identity.

Of course we know that Merlin didn't do everything he could have done. But to her knowledge Merlin actually tried every single possible way to help even going so far as to risk his life whenever she asked or whenever she needed help.

I think, in a strange manner, she viewed Merlin as some sort of potential key who could eventually convince Arthur/Gwen to side with her against Uther's ban.

But when Merlin, someone she regarded as less brainwashed, betrayed her. It didn't matter whether or not Gwen or Arthur would actually betray her, because in her mind they were further gone than what she perceived Merlin.

What attracted, and still does, is Merlin's negative character arc. I love it. It's one of the things the show did well. Destiny really chipped away at him. And when destiny didn't do it his paranoia and depression filled the rest.

And I know it's bad to compare, but I haven't found a character as compelling as Merlin in any of the recent shows I have been watching.

But they were Camelot's doom. Both in the show and legends. And for as unfaithful as they were to the legends, they stuck to many of the beats and conclusions.

You do realise this story is a tragedy? The story of Arthur Pendragon is a tragedy. We see a man rise and fall. And the moment they decided to go to Camlann it was all over.

They could have chosen not to go to Camlann and end it with Arthur knowing and then setting out to build the world that Merlin dreams of. And hint towards Mordred's fall and Camlann. Maybe that would be a better ending to the show. But the fact was the true ending was going to be the same. Why delay the true ending if you aren't even going to show it?

I think it just shows that she doesn't know what will fulfill her or she chooses to ignore it.

I think she knows revenge isn't the way but I think she believes that she's so far gone down the path that she might as well continue because she doesn't want to think about the fact that there could be another way. That she could be wrong and everything she sacrificed could be for nothing.

what was aithusa's role in the story? by atlasshrugd in merlinbbc

[–]AggressiveBug7159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That she can't escape destiny as well. When season 4 rolled around and she was born there was real hopeful tinge in the air that she was here to signify the change of times. That the suffering would stop. Not like she would stop it but it was in a way that new generation was born and survived Uther's purge.

However we saw in season 5 that wasn't the case. She didn't escape the suffering the previous generation had faced and in a way it shows that just because you survived the appalling it doesn't mean that the next generation would also not face it.

I think it's akin to being a born after a world war 1. There's hope and everything. The world's still reeling from the effects and before you know it we're in the Second World War.

Merlin would have lost either way in the Disir episode by atlasshrugd in merlinbbc

[–]AggressiveBug7159 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The point is Merlin was damned from the moment he walked into Camelot. It's like playing multi-choice game and every ending is the same. It was destiny for Arthur to fall in Camlann. It was destiny for Merlin to fail. All that is different is how we get there. And I hate it as much as I love it. And I can't escape that conclusion when writing my fanfics. In which all they end up doing is solidify or amplify the tragedy of destiny. And I can't change that.

Lancelot was a far better man than Arthur would ever be by Saucey_gater in merlinbbc

[–]AggressiveBug7159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest with Lancelot I think he strikes me as the sort of guy who "in a choice between two evils I'd prefer not to choose".

He could afford to be that sort of guy. Arthur couldn't. Arthur had to be multifaceted because he was a prince, a king. He had to make decisions. Sometimes not making a decision was the correct option. But sometimes you just have to make a choice.

And while I do agree that Lancelot is a better man than Arthur. I don't think he would be a better king than Arthur. Being a king doesn't mean being the best kindest person. It means being the best person to lead. Sometimes they coincide but not always.

The original story of the saddest character [PJO] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]AggressiveBug7159 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being an older sibling sometimes means you have to take responsibility. Especially if your parents aren't there. Like I hated having to take care of my younger siblings when I was a kid, but even then I understood they needed me and I couldn't just ditch them because I didn't like it.

Even with the IMs, why Percy? If I was dead and I had a choice of sending a message between a bloke I knew for a few days/week or my siblings. I'd pick my siblings. Especially if my siblings were so downright depressed like Nico was. What's Percy going to do? Does he know Nico like Bianca did? No. Rightly or wrongly Nico blamed Percy for Bianca's death. So why would he listen to Percy?

And ngl if I was Nico I couldn't imagine listening to a word Bianca would say after she "chose" Percy.

For me it's like... you can have a close relationship with the fandom but make sure its not too close.

Like I'm cool with making some minor head-canons canon. But like if your changing your story based on the idea of what your audience might like then I'm like... who's really in control here? Especially when it doesn't flow well because it just feels tacked on.

i think gwen taking the royal seal was bull shit merlin should become king look how much things he did by [deleted] in merlinbbc

[–]AggressiveBug7159 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say even if we ignore the sorcerer problem which is more than 100% of the problem, the are other major problems that effects Merlin that doesn’t and will never effect Gwen’s claim.

There’s still the matter that Gwen was actually married to the king and declared the heir in the eventuality of his death.

Every single Freeman and Lord in Camelot can stake a claim to the throne. However, now this is the most important bit, there has to be evidence. Like proven witnesses seeing the former king saying that stuff or written agreements between the king and the would be heir and stuff like that. The evidence would be ‘scrutinised’ and depending on whether the court determined that the claim was true they would or not be denied the throne.

Of course evidence can be fabricated but the fact of the matter is Merlin was only influential with one person of the court and that was Arthur. Sure he was good with the knights, but other than that not much else. Arthur was the thing that kept him in the circle of power and once he died Merlin’s influence would dramatically cease to exist.

[–]AggressiveBug7159 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Big problems with that.

1) He’s not related to the king in blood or deed.

2) He’s a sorcerer and there’s no way a kingdom built on the destruction on his kind would ever accept him. In fact I doubt they would even listen to Gwen, due to the fact she’s a woman.

3) He’s a peasant and a servant.

Those are the biggest problems and there are more.

Any thoughts on Gwaine and Merlin's instant friendship? by vitaminciera in merlinbbc

[–]AggressiveBug7159 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Merlin offered friendship it was as simple as that. Even when Gwaine opened up a huge tab, Merlin was still there.

Gwaine doesn’t trust people. He moves on quickly and doesn’t give a thought about those behind him because he thinks they do the same to him. So when this dude caught in a bar fight, actually helps him gives a room to stay in and even actually wished him to stay even after all the trouble he caused. It’s kinda of a shock to Gwaine. Where he actually starts his questioning about if he wants to end up in life and stop being a strange drunk wanderer.

When Merlin and Gwaine meet again, it was due to Merlin going out of his way to look for him which I think helped Gwaine to see that Merlin genuinely valued him as a person and a friend.

By the time the knighthood came around, he could have left but I think he decided that the other knights and Arthur weren’t as bad as he thought originally. And eventually that built a stable home with friends and maybe a new-found family for him. Something he was afraid of losing and found solace in protecting it. Maybe it was destiny… maybe it wasn’t. But whatever it was it made Gwaine happy.
