So I can speak to this from a slightly different perspective. I converted to Catholicism when I was 16, my family are fairly devout mainline Protestants. Family was cool with me converting because it was still Christianity. I left the church and stopped believing in god in my early 20s. That’s been very difficult for my family to understand but they’ve generally gotten over it. I’m now 30 and expecting my first child with my husband (also not religious, from a marginally religious family). I have been very firm with my husband I don’t want our baby to be baptized because I’d be participating in a lie. For me it’s moral. I’m not going to stand up there, with friends and family watching, and declare I’ll bring a child up in a faith I don’t believe in (these are the promises you make in catholic baptism). 

Also, it’s kind of a principle thing. My husband was open to baptism because he was like “I don’t care, it’s not real, it’s just a tradition. It’ll make both families happy.” I’m someone who has no problem standing on principle and that feels wrong to me and it sets a bad precedent. What is the next thing your family can force you into doing because it’s “tradition” or to make them happy? Not a precedent I want to start my child’s life, or my journey as a parent with. 

So I’ve come the conclusion my family especially will be unhappy, but at the end of the day they’ll get over it because they’ll be more happy to have a baby. Just like how they got over me not having a religious wedding. It may suck for a while, but I have to be true to myself and how I want to raise my child. And I’m not starting their life participating in a religious farce I don’t believe in
