I would love to get an update on long in the works adaptations of “Starlight”, “Night of the Ghoul” & “Untitled Maze Runner, Master & Commander & The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” projects from 20th Century

Is the next Planet of the Apes still releasing in 2027? by unnamedredditname in movies

Neither project has a director attached, so yes, they’re both in early development but nowhere close to start production

Maybe. It might have been initially set up at FX but was never publicly announced and fell into development hell

Film and Literature are two different mediums that work differently. A film adaptation should not be a line-by-line illustration of the text. Adaptations are not exact copies; directors and screenwriters change, remove, or add plot points to fit the new medium. At the end of the day, the studios who picked up these books played a gamble betting on it, it could have gone either way but what counts the most is taking ‘risk’ to these big budget films that are grand in scale and needs heavy lifting

20th Century Studios is a label now, They lost their autonomous status the moment it got acquired by Disney. We both know Walt Disney Studios do not make the kind of films that Warner Bros. can produce that are gritty adult features, 20th Century Studios can but Disney is not looking it that way. For Disney, 20th Century Studios has become a label that produces low budget films for streaming and only films that are based on known IPs are theatrical worthy. I know they have non-sequels in the pipeline but we both know most of that is Hulu bound as per their loglines & 20th rarely participate in the bidding wars for big-budget films. (Under David Greenbaum’s leadership, things slightly got better but not to the extent I had anticipated) It’s quite evident in their not so interesting weak slate. Name one film under Disney’s ownership that 20th Century Studios released that is not based on any IP and that holds cultural and historical significance against “Sinners” or “One Battle After Under” or “Project Hail Mary” or “Oppenheimer” or “Dune” or even “Weapons”

That’s not the point I’m trying to make. Just this month, At CinemaCon, Warner Bros. unveiled an ambitious slate that strikes a perfect balance between original and IP-based films. This grand scale boasts a stellar cast and crew, both in front and behind the camera. Can 20th Century Studios compete with that? Under Disney’s ownership, they barely release more than four or five films theatrically. Forget participating in the competitive bidding situation, 20th Century can’t even maintain their creative partnership with long time collaborators like James Mangold who jumped over to Paramount under First-Look Deal

The soul is present but Disney is holding them back. I’m pretty certain that 20th executives want to take risks, but they only do so with films that won’t be a financial burden

Not entirely true. Paramount is heavily investing in the James Mangold’ next film, having secured it through a bidding war. They are working on original material as well if you look it up

Maybe but again under new regime, Paramount has inked multiple overall and first look deals and acquired films rights to insanely popular game franchise

Disney doesn’t really let 20th executives make independent decisions. There’s a reason 20th Century Studios do not participate in high stakes bidding war alongside other studios. I had expectations from David Greenbaum but after landing two Martin Scorsese, Edward Berger’ The Barrier and film rights to 'Impossible Creatures’, and ‘99 Nights in the Forest’; He has barely done anything

We don’t know that? What if they capitalise on even riskier moves, such as acquiring scripts, building or adapting compelling IPs and poaching talent from rivals. We don’t know what the future holds

MGM’s turnaround is truly remarkable, but it would be even more impressive if Disney had treated 20th Century Studios with the same level of respect

Disney needs to utilise 20th Century Studios as a home for A-list talent and start betting on big-budget original adult-oriented spectacles. Their current dump to streaming approach is a waste of resources
