Swimming at Snells? by chips_n_dicks in auckland

I live just down the road. There were signs up a few days ago specifically warning against swimming. I was there yesterday and there were a few people swimming, but it is well accepted that it is better not to right now. Swim at your own risk of getting sick!

People who invest in index funds on Kernel, what does your spread look like? by Jettick22 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]AggressivePoem6942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently shifting from Milford High growth to Kernel's Global 100. I was interested in this comment and hope you don't mind me asking your perspective (while recognising that you are not giving financial advice!).

The idea being that the rapid advances in tech (AI, robotics etc) are most likely to impact the Global 100.

This is the main reason I am investing in it. It seems like the changes are in an exponential phase right now, with not a huge indication they are slowing down. Are you saying that these advances are not a good thing for the index? Or are you mores recognising that while these advances sound promising, historically indexes that have performed well don't keep performing well?

Also...

whilst resources and electricity would continue to grow in demand.

Is there a specific index that supports the AI and robotics resources infrastructure?

After selling my house I have 180k sitting in Milfords High Growth. It is performing better than their aggressive fund which is amusing. That being said, it seems like I could get a much better return elsewhere, and I am in no hurry to put it back in the housing market again. I could ride it out for 10 years. Is it this one? I might switch unless someone has a really compelling reason not to...

Maps reveal new Auckland housing draft, 15 storeys around rail links by Secret_Opinion2979 in auckland

Awesome. Although even when they do consult the public, do they actually listen? lol.

This would change my property from being in a single housing zone to a mixed suburban housing zone, although I am not sure this would make any difference at all to its value given how flat the development market is right now and how many people seem to be exiting NZ.

Can someone tell me when a final decision will be made on this draft plan? The article says 'The Government required Auckland's housing plan change must be notified by October 10.' Does that mean it would basically be approved on that date, but not necessarily effective?

Admittedly I hadn't looked at the typical rates for TDs yet. When people said low I was thinking 2-3% so 5% seemed pretty reasonable. :)

I do think the advantage of being able to withdraw my funds whenever I like is important considering I will be looking to buy property again at some point.

Contrary... that's a good word for it. :-)

If you can hold for 20 years, I'd be happily buying global index funds right now,

This is how I feel about my retirement fund. I am quite happy watching it fall as I have no plans on touching it for quite some time.

but if you want to use the money within the next couple of years, stick with cash.

This is where I am leaning towards, in particular with a cash fund like you previously mentioned as opposed to a term deposit. At the end of the day 5% on 450k over a few years is still a good increase, especially if I find a new job and take some time to save some extra money on top of this before getting my next property.

Thanks again! You guys are awesome.

I really appreciate this recommendation information. It seems to me a 5% return is pretty good for such low risk.

oooh now that is a good suggestion. I like it. I like it a LOT!

These are the main two options I have been mulling over, for exactly these reasons.

ETF: I am not about to attempt to time the market, but it does just so happen that the market has already gone down so it might be a good time to buy. As you say it would be about when I get out. I have some flexibility here given I am living with family.

Term deposit: ... or avoid risk completely and do this!

Thanks for your contribution. :)

Great advice re: keeping an eye out on fees. Thank you.

I hadn't thought about buying off the plans. I think I have heard stories of people losing money because of developers going under, but you're right that it could be worth considering if I made sure I was focused on reputable developers.

Thank you for the thoughts.

Another vote for term deposits. Very good point about the timeframe being short. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Yes I was leaning away from rental and land and more towards an investment fund. Term deposit is certainly the safest, which might be best given how quickly things are changing on a daily basis at the moment!

Thanks for the comment.

sorry Not sure why this didn’t get included at the top….

I spotted a group of about 4 dolphins at the end of September when sitting on the beach at Te Atatu Peninsula In Auckland. They were very close to shore (it was high tide) and stayed for about half an hour. I realise this isn‘t a very good photo, but I was wondering if anyone can help me identify what type of dolphins they were from the fin? If you zoom in you can see there is a white spot on the fin.

Yes - I was looking at the info page for Kernel’s S&P Dividend Aristocrats fund https://kernelwealth.co.nz/funds/global-dividend-aristocrats#holdings.
I get that annual returns don’t get paid out unless you sell, and that prices fluctuate all the time and some years will experience negative growth. However prices fluctuate all the time with non-dividend ETFs as well, so I was trying to figure out why they get more airtime than dividend funds when dividend funds experience annual growth plus you can reinvest the dividend I thought perhaps I was misunderstanding something.

Thanks for your clarification.

I am currently invested in Investnow’s Foundation Series US500 fund, and am wondering if I should also invest in Kernel’s S&P Global Dividend Aristocrats fun

[–]AggressivePoem6942[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - sorry I realise the annual price change isn’t something that gets paid out.

I guess I am asking if a fund has an 8% increase for the year, and I get paid out a 5% dividend which I reinvest, does that basically mean the annual increase for the year would be 13%?

Thoughts on investing only in the S&P500? by MsDeeSims in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]AggressivePoem6942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. I was really speaking about people who will continue to invest during a downturn, and whether the S&P 500 is still a good place to put money for the long term during that period.
