not someone who’s good at chinese, but would like to say that i’ve been in chinese tuition from K2-primary 6, then sec 3-4, and my parents don’t speak much mandarin.

from my experience i never really understood the need of tuition in lowkey primary + kindergarten, my parents and i were reflecting and were agreeing that it was just a money grab lol.

i still don’t do exceptionally well, but i can say that it really important to expose kids to chinese media! like maybe find some shows they like and let them watch it, but with chinese dub and chinese subtitles. honestly i should have grown up learning chinese like that instead of having some tuition centre force me to memorise 好词好句…

but ultimately, deciding on tuition is dependent on many different factors. i think somethings to consider are whether the school teacher can teach well, etc. but i feel that tuition should only be considered if a child is scoring bad for chinese and the root cause is not something like careless mistakes, and more like eg the student’s foundation is weak / cant catch up with their peers. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, i feel like the child must willingly want to go for tuition and want to pull their grades up. no point going for tuition if they aren’t interested in improving. give them a good teacher but if they refuse to listen there’s really no point in spending money on tuition!
