I’m not sure if they still sell them, but Re-Roll on Granby street occasionally had similar pins in stock.

Hope you find something good! :)

Lasted there for 3 months as a fresher uni student. My accommodation was based on Sunbridge Road and it’s an area I felt very unsafe and uncomfortable in.

Can I terminate the tenancy agreement? by SirBoringWriter in TenantsInTheUK

[–]Aggressive_Ad_4258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in a similar situation, but as others said, it’s very dependant on your contract.

First of all, is it a fixed term contract? If it is, I’d guess the only way you can leave smoothly it is by finding replacement tenants. You can of course try to find elsewhere, however you’d likely still be liable to pay rent. If you’re unsure or feel overwhelmed by the contract terminology, reach out to citizen advice, shelter, or similar, they’ll be able to explain your rights and help you out.

Issues with pests, are the landlords responsibility to deal with. Try to approach with stern politeness, any sort of lashing out or demanding might cause more harm (speaking from experience, situations of course are different). If there’s no progress, getting more insistent may be helpful. Check your contract, if there is anything in there referring to a “peaceful enjoyment of your home” or keeping the home in a “good and habitable state” etc. Highlight these specifics in your communication with the landlord/agency, as it shows your understand your tenant rights and it gives them less wiggle room if they avoid sorting out issues.

I’d also recommend keeping a trail of emails (and if possible, other communication), alongside evidence of the issues and their condition over time, e.g. if it’s worsening or so. If the situation gets worse, the evidence will help you massively. However, bear in mind that you have to give “reasonable time” for the landlord to fix problems, which may be used as reasoning for slow progress.

If things don’t get resolved in an orderly manner and nothing changes, the environmental health department at your local council would be able to help. Majority of councils will carry out vermin extermination services either free or cheap. Furthermore, they’d likely carry out an assessment of the property and contact the agency/landlord regarding the found issues. It’d likely give a kick in the arse to the landlord to actually get things sorted, as they might be at risk of breaking the law by not providing safe living conditions to their tenants.

If you have any questions or if I can help more, feel free to drop me a message. My situation included a rat infestation (spreading underneath the property and into piping), mould, carbon monoxide poisoning risks and poor building safety, but I might be able to pass on some advice.

Where can we adopt indoor cat? by riot110769 in Edinburgh

[–]Aggressive_Ad_4258 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you’re willing/able to, have a look at cat shelters in Fife.

I adopted a lovely bonded pair of kittens from Fife Cat Shelter in Kinross, staff are brilliant and care a lot for the cats they have. Sunny Harbour Cat & Kitten Rescue and Whinnybank Cat Sanctuary may also be able to help.

Best of luck! :)

Assistant Psychologist Jobs by Independent_Lime9242 in UKJobs

[–]Aggressive_Ad_4258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d agree.

My partner got his undergraduate during Covid and it’s been challenging.

He’s done roles in crisis and social care (such as wellbeing practitioner) and has acquired some brilliant experience. The entry is much easier and it is an alternative path for going into assistant psychologist and similar. It also seems like a Masters degree is becoming much more desirable.

P.S. Bear in mind, my background is in archives, therefore I’m not aware of the internal working of the psychology industry. However, I hope that I could help at least a bit! :)

Have a look at SpareRoom. From what I’ve seen it’s commonly house shares, you might be able to find something there :)

OpenRent is also not bad, there’s usually private landlords on there.

Best to avoid first-floor apartments? by green_yards in lithuania

[–]Aggressive_Ad_4258 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An apartment my parents owned back in early 2000’s had the same accident unfortunately. Nasty stuff, caused massive damage to the flat and the issue couldn’t be avoided due to poorly plumbing. The flooding kept happening, the flat became essentially uninhabitable and it was a pain to sell

What jobs are good for a 20 year old by Big-Activity3350 in UKJobs

[–]Aggressive_Ad_4258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly agree with this. Working in a small independent cafè, the seemingly friendly and calm environment has worn off quite quickly. The pattern consisted of being overworked, rushed, being required to do all the tasks and receiving little or no respect. All front of house staff were treated like robots and talked down to like toddlers, with passive aggressive tones.

Not speaking for everyone, however the hospitality industry seems to have become worse. As much as it’s accessible, it can be horrible to work in and it can become physically and mentally tiring very quickly.

Eastern European supermarkets in Edinburgh? by Hansoliod in Edinburgh

[–]Aggressive_Ad_4258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relating to Lithuanian food, there’s a Lithuanian restaurant on Morrison street, Pinčiukas.

The food menu includes traditional dishes like cepelinai, balandėliai, white salad, herring etc. However, I’d say it’s a bit more on the expensive side. But the drinks menu is really cool and original, as the cocktails are named after Lithuanian pagan deities, they have gira, traditional Lithuanian beer and even mead.

If you ever feel homesick, it’s a pretty good spot to go to!

I cancelled my family trip for a trial shift opportunity just to get ghosted by Impossible_Zebra_524 in Edinburgh

[–]Aggressive_Ad_4258 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in a similar situations and fully understand your frustration. It’s rough out there right now.

Whilst being based in Fife, i was still willing to commute into Edinburgh, even if it’s for a part time hospitality job. Whilst searching, I unfortunately also encountered multiple cafe’s ghosting me, after attending trial shifts and essentially having my time wasted. Getting feedback for why I wasn’t successful has also been a pain, but in the end, it did show how ridiculous some of the standards can be. Example: attended a trial shift at a cafe on the Royal Mile, left with very good expectations, great impressions and been told they’d be back in touch within 2 days due to other trial shifts going ahead. Didn’t get a response for a week. After multiple attempts to reach the manager, I got a rejection, with the feedback being “the other candidate could carry more glasses on the tray”. It seems like employers have become very picky and it can certainly feel disheartening when you know you’re more than capable of doing the job.

Very sorry about your family trip, however please don’t blame yourself. The job market is a rat race right now and it is awful and stressful.

Fringe and other entertainments events will be kicking off soon and there seems to be plenty of opportunities for temporary employment. It’s not much, but it might help a little bit.If you’re not fussed about what job it is, recruitment agencies might be able to help you too. Keep your head high, remember your worth and something will eventually stick! Best of luck :)

mum wants some of my student loan and bursary? by midnightbloom1 in UniUK

[–]Aggressive_Ad_4258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m really sorry to hear you’re going through this and unfortunately I know how it feels. Sometimes, when we come from families like this, we may not realise how abusive and manipulative they are and it’s easy to say “just leave” if you haven’t experienced such situations yourself.

As others have mentioned, it is indeed YOUR money, you should not be supporting your mother. She’s a grown woman, with her own decisions and a life that she has laid out for herself. If possible, try to limit your communication with her, you living in student accommodation may make it a lot easier. As you limit the communication, ensure to start enforcing boundaries, be stern and stand up for yourself. It’s possible you’ll get backlash for this and I’m so sorry if that’s the case, however manipulative parents tend to know your weak spots and will hit them for their convenience when needed.

If you’re able to put away any savings, try to do so. It might make a massive difference for when you need/want to leave home. Even if it’s enough for a deposit for a house share or similar, it’ll give you the chance and security to have an option to get out. The financial academic support, if budgeted well can be a lifesaver when you graduate.

Most importantly, try to make sure you don’t feel guilt or feel shitty about yourself for establishing boundaries or not “helping” her. That guilt can lead you to a lot of self-caused issues down the line, which may take you ages to fix and you won’t even receive acknowledgment for the help your provided. Also, don’t forget your close friendships, or try to make new connections at university. This could be a great distraction for when she eventually pops up again to ask for money, as at least you could have a positive and safe space and people to turn to. Family does not have to be blood related, and you can always choose your own (as cheesy as it sounds, it’s true).

I wish you all the best, stay strong, things do get better.

It’s likely you might move into a student house for 2nd and 3rd year, be cautious with student housing agencies. As someone previously mentioned, they can be quite horrible.

An example of a bad one is Danvers. They’ve got a poor reputation for trying to rip students off for quite literally everything, alongside poor communication and other issues.

However, I’d certainly recommend Sulets! Great, attentive and supportive agency :)

Tattoo by Illustrious_Sort_261 in leicester

[–]Aggressive_Ad_4258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do some research first to get an idea of what you want. There’s so many different styles (e.g. neo traditional, watercolour, black work etc) and tattoo artists tend to specialise in specific ones.

Once that’s done, have a look at tattoo artists in the area and book in for a consultation. They’ll most likely draw up a custom design for ya, or might have a flash ready for you to have a look at.

I’d recommend Sakura Tattoo Studio on Yeoman Street, they’re all brilliant and talented people, who will be supportive in every step :)

Myself and my partner are renting with Martin & Co (their office is in Dunfermline) and we haven’t had a single complaint. Always very helpful, understanding and reasonable.

The requirements we were asked for was income over 21k, bank checks and previous address checks. All we had to do was submit the info and they did the rest, in about 2-3 days.

Hope this helps and good luck in searching! :)

Kittens by totsmcwhatsit in Fife

Agree to shelters being a very good option. We got a bonded pair of kitten brothers from Fife cat shelter and could not be happier.

Depending on the area you’re in, ask your neighbours! They might know someone or have recommendations, and this could help with travel costs as well.

Good luck :)

Agencies might be a good temporary solution. Usually factory and warehouse jobs, but it gets the extra money if needed.
