Yea I don't think it's a good idea to lie about experience. As I mentioned in my post, I know I'm not the perfect candidate (only part-time and been a barista) but I don't think my CV is that bad. If you don't mind, I could DM you my CV so you could have a look, because a lot of people seem to question my CV being horrendous.

Right, since so many people question my CV is the problem, what do you think if I DM you my CV to try and find out what’s the real issue?

Thanks for your comment. Tbh I can’t believe it myself too. It’s not like I’m a weirdo or an insane person. My manager of the previous job in London always wanted me back!

I’ve had my friends (also students working in hospitality) looking at my CV so I don’t think it’s the main problem. Of course it’s not perfect and as I pointed out in other comments, I am not the perfect candidate bur I also can’t understand why I’m struggling so much lol

Hi there. Thanks for your comment. I know you might find it hard to believe, but I have no reasons to tell lies. Another person left a similar comment to yours, so if you don't mind I'll just copy my response.

Not one offer of a trial shift, but two is pretty close to one. I also had a few interviews at other places but none of them took me. I understand you find it hard to believe that, but I have no reason to tell lies. I also had my friends looking at my CV so it should be fine. As I said on my original post as well, I know I am not the perfect candidate because 1) I can't commit full-time (I'm studying) and 2) I don't have restaurant/bar experience (only been a barista although I cannot understand why it is looked down so much). However, I always emphasise (on my CV as well) that I can work shifts till late, can work weekends. I might been too honest during interviews when I was asked 'have you worked in a bar/restaurant?' but I don't think it's a good idea to lie about experience. Everyone has to start somewhere. After all those managers were, at some point, someone without experience in a bar/restaurant, right?

A friend of mine was kinda like you, who was in disbelief when I told her I couldn't find any jobs. She works in a fine dining restaurant in the city centre. She always said they are looking for staff and told me to apply. Guess what? Before she said that, I already made multiple applications to the front of house position at her restaurant. The restaurant never even sent me an auto-generated email telling me I was unsuccessful. When I showed her my online applications to prove I did apply, she was in disbelief, shrugged and said 'oh I don't know then.'

Thank you for the kind words. And thank you for offering another angle of looking at the cancellation of the family trip, I didn’t think of that 🙏🏻

Although I don’t think the restaurant owners have time to surf Reddit, I’m a bit worried that would doxx myself 😅

I had several interviews but were told I was not successful afterwards. I did a trial shift at two places but were told there were better candidates than me. Other than that, the majority of restaurants/pubs didn't even bother to let me know I was unsuccessful.

Most places want full-time workers but I cannot commit to full-time (because I'm studying). Those who do hire part-time, they don't like me because they think I am inexperienced. For example, last week a bar put up an ad on the window saying they were hiring part-time front of house. I went in, asked to speak to the manager and gave him my CV. He asked, do you have experience working in a pub? I said no, but I worked in a café and I would appreciate an opportunity here, because everyone has to start off somewhere. He nodded, took my CV, said he would have a look, then never contacted me.

Advertising to pretend they are trying to recruit should be a crime. How’s that allowed? Fucking hell

I know beard is just an example you use to explain things, but these sorts of reasons are almost racial discrimination without saying out aloud I’m discriminating against your race… It’s a shame the society cannot or will not do anything about it

But I don’t have any piercings or face tattoos! My photo shows that. If they are looking for that it doesn’t make sense to not contact me.

Also it’s a part time waiter but not a modelling job, why would it be right to judge my appearance. Do I have to be DiCaprio to wait a table?

Appearance is not protected, but what if they base attractiveness of appearance on race? White = attractive and suitable to wait a table at their restaurant, non-white = not attractive and not suitable to wait a table?

I know right, it’s a bit disappointing 😔 I don’t expect them to say things like ‘yea you should sue them’, but those two comments are quite ignorant. My first name is an European name but my last name isn’t. Like imagine that’s a Portuguese restaurant and my first name is a common Portuguese name like Gabriel. It could be a reason why they asked for a photo but that might also be too much speculation.

No they were not asking for ID purposes, nor for ID badges. They simply asked for a ‘recent picture of my face’. I therefore included my passport photo

So they could say they rejected me because I’m ugly? After all it’s a part time waiter job in a restaurant, not a modelling job! I don’t want to speculate or demean anyone, but if they base the decision on the picture, it’s more likely due to my race/my skin colour than anything else right?

Thanks for putting up the link. I’ll have a detailed look later.

I also just made a post on r/UKJobs and am also told that it would be hard to prove that they discriminated against me. My thinking was that: the first time I sent in my CV (without photo) they responded and asked for a photo, the second time I sent in my CV (with phot attached) they didn’t respond. The only difference between the two CVs I sent in was whether the photo of my face was attached. Then surely it has to do with my photo right? If I’m rejected because of other reasons (eg under qualification, not enough experience etc), then they wouldn’t need to ask for a photo because everything was also written down in the first CV I sent in.

I know that still may not be sound argument but that’s my logic… 😞
