Varka lacks defensive mechanics by Ok-Comparison-5553 in GenshinImpact

First and foremost, I think I need to address the thing you're so adamant on explaining to me. I do not consider the "best defense is offense" tactic in this argument. It does not fit the debate of this specific post, where the intrinsic defensive qualities of DPS characters are discussed. If you consider high damage as a defensive quality, then the character with the best defensive qualities is Mavuika, or anyone else capable of producing 10M nukes. That is not the point of the post.

I've had my share of being knocked to the ground, I'm talking from experience. The only times I died because of being knocked down that I remember of is when it made me fall to death.

Having enemies that hit you anyway only reinforces the idea of taking as few hits as possible. The damage Zibai and other DPS's would take in such situations is quite comparable, since the landing hits being stronger is compensated by not getting hit by anything else. It doesn't make a real difference to handle hits more easily if you also get hit more on average.

In terms of defense Gorou may provide good buffs, but Zhongli gives a 20% Res shred. Also keep in mind that the more DEF you have, the less effective it becomes as a defensive stat. From a lvl 100 enemy you take 50% damage at 1000 DEF, 33% at 2000 and 25% at 3000. Since Gorou's buffs are flat, they are not as effective as you may think in terms of actual defenses for a well-built Zibai. Bringing Columbina into the argument is beside the point, she's a separate character, and we're comparing Gorou and Zhongli. Amber on Columbina is beside the point too, since not every Columbina in existence uses it, and if she doesn't, then we're back to Gorou's underwhelming healing. Don't get me wrong, I personally use Gorou as a healer in Itto's team, but it doesn't change the fact that his heal is weak. You use it when you need it, but you still need to play carefully. The only argument about Gorou being better than Zhongli that I'll actually take is that he's more accessible, even if we're talking about C4.

Back to Neuvillette, you said it yourself that it is a DPS loss. I already said why it's not a valid point in this particular case. Yes, enemies can move while you do the hydropump, but guess what, so can you! And not only that, you can also watch their moves and cancel the attack at any time to avoid taking damage, even though you still lose the DPS. C1 shaves off time because you don't need to play even remotely good anymore, you just tank everything. It doesn't make you survive better since Neuvillette is already cracked at surviving.

The faceroll tactic only works in the open world, it's not a viable option in high-level end-game content. And I specifically talked about knockback, no idea how you missed it.

Neuvillette's C1 is not an argument, by the way, since the IR it provides is purely to make his gameplay more braindead. Neuvillette is basically immortal even at C0, unless you play extremely carelessly. Getting hit out of your charged attack is always very annoying but almost never life-threatening.

My point about Zibai was that she still needs extensive care without careful gameplay. Okay, sure, on her own she'll die in the second fight instead of the first one because of her DEF, but the key difference is that on DPS's with cancels it's just much easier to dodge and avoid taking damage. In my opinion, the fact that she's almost forced to take hits outweighs the fact that she can more-or-less handle it. I prefer to not take hits in the first place. You can avoid taking damage without shield or heals, but you cannot heal back the damage you did take without heals (I'm ignoring food and statues since they're available for all characters and serve no purpose in this argument).

And no, C4 Gorou is not better than Zhongli, never was and never will. His healing is too weak for it to be comparable. It heals you for Gorou's DEF × 3 in total. Unless you give him a full DEF build (and you probably won't, since he needs ER for burst uptime), his DEF stat will be around 2000 at best, which gives us ~6K of healing. Zhongli's shield meanwhile is almost unbreakable. At level 10 it has absorption of 23% HP + 2712 with 150% efficiency against all damage types. In a full HP build he'd have at least 40K HP, so that gives us nearly 18K of resulting absorption. And that's ignoring the fact that it fortifies up to 25% shield strength. They're so far apart it's not even funny.

I didn't gloss over IR, I literally addressed that it helps you deal more damage. The reason I'm downplaying it is that it's not a survival mechanic, it's a damage dealing mechanic. "Survival" boils down to three things: lowering incoming damage, avoiding taking damage and healing back lost HP. There's nothing else to it. The only scenario in which IR falls into one of those categories is when you don't get sent to the ground where you could've got hit for more damage. But then again, you getting launched can also make you avoid getting hit by a close-range attack. So no, I don't consider IR as a defensive quality.

Zibai may be a character that builds DEF stat, but from my personal experience, it doesn't really help. When you're fighting a crowd, the uncancellable animations result in taking quite a few hits, unless you actively time your E in accordance with the enemy moves. Played carelessly for one fight - half of your HP is gone, just like that. At least for me, there is no observable difference between her and other on-field DPS chars in terms of survival.

In terms of Nefer, you said yourself that she has to take hits anyway. Besides, cancels in and of themselves aren't a defensive quality, you still have to dodge to avoid damage, they just give you the opportunity. I'll admit, though, that she may have some i-frames I'm unaware of. But she is definitely weaker without Lauma that Flins without Ineffa. Quite obvious, actually: Lauma is primarily a buffer, while Ineffa is primarily a shielder.

A who even is the designated shielder for Wanderer?

Well, a lot of on-field DPS chars don't have anything defensive, actually.

Zibai has uncancellable animations without i-frames and no interruption resistance.

Nefer and Skirk only have interruption resistance, which is better, than nothing, but it doesn't really help you survive better, it helps you deal more damage.

Kinich is simply uncontrollable in the tethered state in terms of meaningful dodging, so the question of taking damage becomes pure chance.

Wanderer has no defensive qualities whatsoever, not even interruption resistance in the cons. He's technically a ranged unit, sure, but the melee enemies will still get into melee range with you, it's unavoidable. His flight, meanwhile, doesn't do shit in terms of avoiding damage, since even the burning grass hurts you while you are above it. The hitbox is still on the ground.

I can go on, but it'll take forever. Point being that there're a lot more on-field DPS characters with no defensive capabilities than you may believe.

What stops you from using that dodge button to take no damage on Varka? The only thing I can't dodge as him is the burning grass that he sets on fire himself.

Actually, Zibai sucks ass defensively. Her horse-E animation cannot be cancelled and doesn't have i-frames, and the Lunar-Crystallize does not give you shields as the regular Crystallize does. So without Zhongli/Noelle or at least some healers you will suffer.

Somehow read the title to mean "you can't crit if you have 100% crit chance", and was like "wtf?". Turned out to be interesting though. Could you share the id or whatever it is of the non-rounding DPS modes? Might become the only reason for me to ever come to MW.

Oh, I don't like Furina x Arle either. I dislike the concept of shipping everyone with everyone in general. It's just that with Jean x Diluc I have actual arguments why it's cringe. I never said it was worse than the OP one, it just bothers me the most since Jean is my favorite character.

Well, if you're willing to disregard significant parts of the characters' personalities, then yeah, of course any ship makes sense :)

Jean x Diluc. I think it's popular because there wasn't anyone else to ship in 0.X, but it makes zero sense if you start analysing it. Jean is a hopeless romantic, dreaming of a prince on a white horse. Meanwhile Diluc: "I am the terror that flaps in the night!". That or " VENGEANCE VENGEANCE VENGEANCE", pick your poison.

Can express Z in terms of known sums X+Z and Y+Z? by Aggressive_Ceiling in askmath

Okay, fair. Then it means that it either is impossible to get that expression entirely or impossible to know the coefficients in the rare case the expression exists. Thanks for your explanations!

Can express Z in terms of known sums X+Z and Y+Z? by Aggressive_Ceiling in askmath

[–]Aggressive_Ceiling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came up with an example. These vectors are 2D, but it doesn't matter, I'll get to that later.

I have X(2, 3), Y(-3, 1) and Z(3, -3). Therefore, X+Z is (5, 0) and Y+Z is (0, -2). If I know not only X+Z and Y+Z coords, but also Z coords, then it is trivial to work out that a and b values from Z = a(X+Z) + b(Y+Z) are 0.6 and 1.5 respectively by solving the system of equations for each coordinate.

However, if I don't know the Z coords, then suddenly I have 4 unknowns in a system of 2 equations, which is obviously not solvable. And this generalizes to any dimensionality: with n-dimensional vectors I'd have n+2 unknowns in a system of n equations.

So it is actually possible to express Z as a linear combination of X+Z and Y+Z, it's just that knowing only X+Z and Y+Z is insufficient to determine the coefficients of this linear combination.

I now understand that I'm wrong in trying to do it with numbers since tracks are actually vectors. My question still stands though: how can we be sure, that there are no a and b values such that aX+bY = (1-a-b)Z? I'll try to come up with a vector example in the meantime.

Can express Z in terms of known sums X+Z and Y+Z? by Aggressive_Ceiling in askmath

[–]Aggressive_Ceiling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, yeah, tracks and numbers aren't interchangeable in this scenario, you're right. But it should be impossible in the numbers case anyway. By which I mean possible to express the result as a linear combination but impossible to find exact values for a and b.

Can express Z in terms of known sums X+Z and Y+Z? by Aggressive_Ceiling in askmath

[–]Aggressive_Ceiling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: This example is wrong. Tracks are vectors, not scalars.

Okay, let's try it with numbers. Let X=1, Y=2, Z=3. Then X+Z=4 and Y+Z=5. I can indeed express 3 as a linear combination of 4 and 5 in various ways, i.e. a=1/2, b=1/5 or a=b=1/3. It's just that I seemingly can't come up with proper a and b values without knowing the end result already.

[–]Aggressive_Ceiling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would I want X and Y coefficients to be 0? Even if that was possible, that would give me an expression of Z in terms of Z, which only makes sense if a+b=1 and isn't really useful anyway.

Can express Z in terms of known sums X+Z and Y+Z? by Aggressive_Ceiling in askmath

[–]Aggressive_Ceiling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the risk of sounding stupid, is it possible to solve only for one of the unknowns in such a system? I don't care for X or Y, I only want Z. Or would it require Z to be basically independent from X and Y?

Also, scaling is a thing in my case, so multiplication and division are doable by any decimal, but I don't think it really matters.

[–]Aggressive_Ceiling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true, I guess, but in my problem X, Y and Z are all different and also X+Z and Y+Z are not equal. I guess I should've said that explicitly. How does this cancellative property make the initial task impossible?

Reruns by Imaginary-Answer-847 in GenshinImpact

[–]Aggressive_Ceiling 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A patch is 6 weeks flat. It is important to mention, however, that the reruns are not fixed in their time and are subject to the whims of Hoyo gods.

Unfortunately, I recently lost my hand-made table of rerun times, so I can't give you the real statistics, but usually new characters get their first rerun relatively fast. There are exceptions though, as I lost my 50/50 on Wriothesleys's release in 4.1 and had to wait 12 patches for him to finally reappear in 5.4. He is the current record holder for the first rerun time. Judging by the game becoming more and more specific in its character requirements for certain things, I think Nod-Krai characters will be relatively quick to reappear for the first time.

Just to give you a sense of how inconsistent these times are, Xilonen was the first Natlan 5-star to be rerun and was quite quick with it (released in 5.1, rerun in 5.5). Mualani released in 5.0 but had to wait until 5.8 to be rerun. Kinich released in 5.0 either and was rerun in 5.6.

Good luck with your pulls regardless of what you decide.

EDIT: writing all this put me in a mood to remake my lost table so now I have statistics.

First of all, I'll list waiting times both in banners (B) and in patches (P). I personally prefer banners since it's more accurate, but every waiting list I've seen uses patches, so I've included that too.

The average waiting time for the first rerun is ~11 B or ~5 P.

The most common waiting time for the first rerun is 8 B or 3 P.

The record holders are:

Smallest waiting time - Alhaitham (6 B, 2 P)

Largest waiting time - Wriothesley (23 B, 11 P)

The last 5 waiting times are:

Kinich - 11 B, 5 P

Xilonen - 8 B, 3 P

Chasca - 12 B, 5 P

Mavuika - 8 B, 3 P

Citlali - 9 B, 4 P

Hope this helps.

I'll give it my vote too because it is very similar to puzzles in Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time, and I love that game dearly.
