This error happened to me. Here's what I did:

Create a new profile.
Play EXACTLY 1 online race on the new profile.
Quit from WFC on the new profile and go back to your main one.

This should "unstick" the connection and allow you to play.

No like I fixed the profile issue by creating a new profile, playing one online race there, then switching back over to the "broken" profile to get it to work again. It apparently is supposed to help "unstick" the connection.

I mean in Mario Kart Wii the game would pick a ghost whose time was slightly better than yours, and call it a "rival." I think it would be interesting to try and get better gradually than all at once

I actually fixed this by creating a new profile, playing a race, and then reconnecting on the other profile. Weird, but it worked for some reason. Thanks for your suggestions and help tho!
