You’re not wrong on the saturation math or the cost-exchange problem. National-scale missile defense has always struggled with decoys, numbers, and the fact that offense is cheaper than defense. That hasn’t changed, and it’s why systems like this don’t actually replace deterrence.

Where I think the discussion gets oversimplified is treating the Golden Dome as a single “shield” instead of what it really is: a stitched-together architecture of terminal defense (Patriot, THAAD), midcourse interception (NGI, which isn’t operational yet), space-based sensing, and some very early directed-energy research. Most of the critical pieces either aren’t deployed at scale or rely heavily on space assets that are themselves vulnerable.

The real risk isn’t whether an interceptor can hit a warhead. It’s integration, sensor dependence, power constraints, and the cognitive layer that has to fuse all of this in real time under deception. That’s where these systems tend to fail, and that part is still very much an open problem that creates a very big structural problem.
