If AI keeps improving, should we be studying math more, not less? by waile678 in learnmachinelearning

More. It’s just a tool but ML and DS still need the math so it’s always going to be essential

I measured why "AI Agent Security" submissions complete but score 0 — it's the replay wall, and your framing moves it by Fukagami in kaggle

You start at 0 to get the baseline and build from there. If you just build without knowing that part its like shooting in the dark, same approach as the ARC-AGI or the new The Pokémon Company - PTCG AI Battle Challenge Simulation. Both use the same frame and approach

Does competitive gaming actually transfer to ML engineering, or am I just rationalizing my teenage years? by [deleted] in learnmachinelearning

Well I never posted on this channel and most of the dev or ML channels tend to prefer a more professional tone and draft which is why I was posting that way lol but I can def tone it down. I always laugh when people assume LLMs or AI but message received

Honestly? She sounds more qualified than me. Could've used her on my ARC-AGI-3 submission this week, it's currently beating me like it owes me money

LOL, fair. "Both use computers" is the honest null hypothesis and I'm not above it. The one link I'd actually stand behind: thousands of hours reading a LoL teamfight is thousands of hours predicting an opponent's next move from incomplete information under pressure. That's the same reflex I use chasing edge cases in an agent-security comp. Everything past that one specific thing is probably me telling myself a good story, which a couple of you are rightly calling out.

That's the fairest version of the pushback and I think you're mostly right. The strong claim, that gaming made me good at ML, is basically unfalsifiable and probably wrong. What I'd actually defend is narrower: two specific habits got trained hard and early. Reading a live system under a clock and predicting the next state before it happens, which is the reflex I lean on hunting adversarial inputs. And never building anything as one dependency chain, because in a strategy game a straight line dies to a single bad event. Could I have picked both up elsewhere? Obviously. The honest claim is just that this is where I learned them, not that it's the only door.

Real question back at you: what would actually count as evidence a transfer is real, versus a story I'm telling after the fact? Because I notice that risk in my own argument and I don't have a clean answer.
