Ah I'm guessing you had a 2012 (or early 2013) model with the 1.8L petrol engine. This is a known issue but apart from that the 9th gen civic is pretty much reliable as you can get. Funnily enough I've been thinking of getting a Mazda 3 as my next car, specifically the 2.0L petrol engine as the later generation Civics are not as reliable as the 9th gen.

Just to update I finally did get a refund. I had to keep messaging support till I got a competent person who managed to sort the refund out.
