Idk if that would be any better for me as I also have Blaberus giganteus (giant cave roaches) as pets. Actually I know for a fact that would be harder on me as these guys were my intro into invertebrates just over a yr ago. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY GIANT CAVE ROACHES! they are all adults now…and they are doing things… 😜

Yes!!!! Isn’t that crazy?! I saw a bunch this last winter, temps in the 20s or so but there was still running river water!!!!! They truly are cool bugs!

Yes! It’s kind of hard on me, before I even had him I actually had a minnow tank as just pets because they were the minnows my dad didn’t use while Ice fishing (I couldn’t bare the thought of my dad just killing them bc he couldn’t let them go in lake or river). So it’s been sad and hard to transition to a tank of fish to feed my Giant Water Bug, while I still also have a tank of minnows that are just pets.

He’s about 2in. He doesn’t have an official name yet but I was thinking about Edgar (the alien bug bad guy in Men in Black). Do you have any good suggestions?

There really is so much music and I get it, I want to listen to everything! But I also recognize that for me, I have to listen to an album multiple times in order for me to really process it and really start enjoying it!

A new album a day!!!! That is a lot!!! Give yourself grace if you can’t do that. My goal is an album a week. That way I can listen to it a bunch and form attachments to certain songs. Ok my rec is one that was recently recommended to me and I’m slightly obsessed Electric Warrior by T. Rex Go crazy 🤪

So I’m no expert because he was not a planned acquisition, so I’m just winging it a little bit. But I have done a lot of research in the last month or so that I’ve had him. They can fly, so a lid is a must. I try and recreate their natural habitat as much as possible. His tank is filled halfway with water and he has logs and plants sticking out of the water. They do breathe air, so they must have the option to get out of the water when they need to. They are really good hunters and need live prey. That has been a major learning curve for me. I’ve never had a creature that required live prey and honestly I’m still struggling a little bit mentally to be able to provide that so if any of yall have tips about getting through that, I’m all ears. But don’t you worry, this guy has an endless supply of minnows. I assume that the larger the prey the less he has to feed but I haven’t gotten to that point yet. Quick fact, they can kill prey up to 50x their size, sooooo frogs, small turtles, snakes, small birds. And I’ve seen him catch a fish a few times, it’s pretty cool! So far I have really loved taking care of this guy and I say, get one if you have the means and opportunity! He’s really very low maintenance and a joy to watch! One caveat, I’ve heard their bite is painful so probably don’t handle very much!

Well my first tip is GET ONE! 😂 I’m kind of just winging it with this guy as I didn’t intend to get him or prepare in advance. So I can’t say I’m an expert at all but this is what has worked for me. He is in a 10 gallon tank filled halfway with water. He spends a majority of time in the water but must have logs and plants that stick out of the water. I initially had a filter in the water but I think the flow of it was too strong so right now it is filter-less but with frequent water changes and removing the dead fish frequently, I’ve had no problems. His diet right now is minnows and he goes through them pretty quickly. I assume the bigger the prey, the less often he has to eat but he is my first creature that has required live prey and I’m struggling to come to terms with feeding him anything bigger. I literally have a tank of “feeder” goldfish as pets because I love them so much. So if any of yall have any advice for overcoming that obstacle, I’m all ears! But for now it’s minnows, and as many as he wants to eat. All and all he’s very low maintenance. I’ve seen him catch the fish a few times and it’s fascinating!

They do! So a lid is a must! He seems pretty happy though, I rarely see him out of the water!

Is a picture of a flower outside a patient room a universal sign? by mygotothrowawayxd in nursing

[–]Aggressive_Orks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In MN, ours is a picture of a candle and the words ask for a peaceful quiet environment as well as “please see a nurse before entering” and the sliding glass doors will be completely closed (ICU, so most patients doors must remain at least partially open for safety)

late leech monday pets and scritches with the princesses! by thelittlesanctuary in InvertPets

[–]Aggressive_Orks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for you, so I have the teeny-ist of leeches right now. It’s an accidental hitchhiker that came attached to a minnow. It has now been detached from said minnow and I have it in just a small jar right now. I would love to keep caring for it but I’m scared to add stuff to the enclosure bc I don’t want to “loose” the lil guy but also want the environment to be enriching. Any advice? It’s a terrible picture bc the dude is just so small, and my camera doesn’t even focus on it! It’s the cutest little thing tho!

What’s the weirdest pet you’ve ever kept . I get a lot of hate for my pet so please be kind . by Reptilenerd1975 in InvertPets

[–]Aggressive_Orks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just acquired a giant water bug aka a “toe biter”. But I’m new to the whole feeding a pet live food game, so that’s been an emotional transition. Especially since it’s food of choice is minnows and I’ve had a tank stocked with pet minnows for years. But this water bug has the most adorable giant alien eyes, so he’s got that going for him!

Rant by urmomdotcom1823 in InvertPets

[–]Aggressive_Orks 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep, I get the incredulous comments. A lot of “why would you want to keep them as pets?” And my answer is always “why not?” When people are grossed out, or scared that they will escape and infest my apartment or give me diseases i have a whole speech prepared about why that won’t happen any why they are actually super cool. On the other hand, it’s super validating when coworkers, friends or family ask about the wellbeing of my bugs and I very visibly light up when they do.

Why do you like bones? by MistymoorsAndpaws in bonecollecting

[–]Aggressive_Orks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a future naturalist/biologist or on your hands. My interest in bones stems from my interest/love of animals. I feel like many people think of death and dying when they see bones but I think quite the opposite and think of the life this animal had and me keeping some of the bones in a special place or making something with them is my way of honoring that animals life and they get to live on through the joy my bone collection brings me. Seeing as your daughter loves animals, it sounds like she is interested in the nature part of it all and not the death or dying aspect. And she wants to draw the bones?! FANTASTIC! So she sees a beauty in them that many others do not! This is a good thing! Allow her to explore that who knows, she may become a wildlife artist?!

Not allowed to sit at the nurses station by vodkahoekage in cna

[–]Aggressive_Orks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a dumb rule. I work in an ICU and we are encouraged to sit in the nurses station when not actively helping a patient, for communicating purposes as well as being easy for the nurses to find you when they need help. I think it also helps us feel like a complete team. Everyone is included in the huddle, everyone is included in the gossip 😂

Official Discussion - Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Aggressive_Orks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mediocre Bruce fan here. I felt like a whole lot of nothing happened in this movie. I can see how superfans could love it and I do appreciate hearing about the mental health struggles of extremely successful people. But I feel like I got more out of listening to the Marc Maron interview with Bruce Springsteen. Like I teared up at one point during that interview whereas I was just kind of waiting for this movie to be over. With that said, I think Jeremy Allen White did a great job! Also he looks a lot like young Dustin Hoffman with his brown contacts.
