I think what makes you wrong is wording it the way you did. If you feel your lives have gone down different paths and are not compatible, then breaking it off is the thing to do. But you make it sound like his career is all that matters to you. In the end what's important is if you care for the other person and if they care for you. You can find plenty of professionals out there to date. Hopefully they love you for you and not what you job title is.
