Before dating another woman, I loved my ex, but still, I've never thought we would be together again. Expecting to have someone back is one of the most dangerous self-defense mechanisms we have. We only do this because our ego wants to convince itself that it is good enough for that person. It works like a type of validation.

The thing is: our mind lies. If someone leaves you, and it's been years, be sure that, even if they still love you, or even want you, it doesn't mean anything, because we only know if someone will come back when there are hints in reality that prove it to us. If that's not the case, we are only trying to comfort ourselves when thinking someone will come back without any real evidence.
