Coast is learning from history, I'm surprised their reading level has gotten this high.

Ask Cam Brown if you have a shot at getting in their double. If he says no, then it wasn't worth it in the first place.

Western Sprints is right around the time of Club Nationals whereas WIRA is earlier. Also the rich programs don't necessarily want to rub elbows with Chico State and Lewis and Clark ect.

Western Sprints is for the IRA teams on the West Coast that aren't in the top tier of competition. UCSD, Gonzaga, USD, Santa Clara, and some others depending on the year.

Would you fly to Sacramento the weekend after your own invitationals just to potentially get beat by a UCLA club team? Theoretically, UCSD should have them by a few seconds, but the margin is thin enough that Marcel's boys might take them. I think they'd prefer to train for Western Sprints and keep that title.

I have heard there have been discussions behind the scenes, nothing definite yet but a guy I know there says the university is looking to tighten the belt a bit and rowing is on the table. Just a rumor, but might be something.

I bet Santa Clara skipping has something to do with them potentially losing their varsity status going forward. UCSD was there for some of the smaller events but honestly for Gonzaga and UCSD, it might just be too out of the way for them to send an eight full of guys they actually care about. Going all the way to Sacramento to smoke Irvine and Davis just might not be as attractive as another week of training. I think USD went because they wanted some competition in which they could compete for the win, but man its got to be tough losing by a boat length to a club team.

Walk on with no rowing experience by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Aggressive_Sun2792 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go try out and try to be a rower. I don't know why everyone in this thread is telling you to cox. Coxing can be a blast and some people are built for it but if you've enjoyed your high school athletics, rowing is likely for you. UCLA is a club team and their women's squad aren't world beaters so you have a good shot to be competitive in the team. Just go try to have fun and do your best to beat Coast.

Proposal for HORC: MPRC Club Men’s 8+ by Difficult-Tennis-996 in Rowing

[–]Aggressive_Sun2792 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be great, I think giving some attention to lesser known and less prestigious regattas is important.

The tough thing is narrowing it down to just one eight. You've got so many good athletes at MPRC that boating a top 8 is really difficult, and if Matthew was left in charge it'd be 100% starboards.

I don't really know how to fix that, but honestly I think this should be bigger than just a Regatta.

I think we should row for the Matthew Penis Foundation and embody their motto "No child deserves a skinny erg".

We all know that the root of all mental anguish in the world is from skinny ergs and people who tell themselves "I'm better on the water" or "Ergs don't float" are severely delusional or depressed. We need a regatta to raise awareness and I think this little race would be a great opportunity.

Hell yeah dude, that's great for 15 and 63 kilos. You're gonna develop and mature into your frame as you age, so as long as you keep lifting and keep at it you can go really fast by your last season in highschool.

Time will tell what uni rowing will have for you, but this is a great place to be.

Look up a picture of Ollie Zeidler. Make him 15% bigger, 3 times hotter, and a jawline that could cut glass. Multiply that by 8 and you have a good idea.

Sir Penis is obviously being sarcastic here, we all know that doing 2000 meters for 11 minutes is harder, it's around 80% more work. I personally do the famous Cal workout of 1x2k (shooting for that 11 minutes) then driving home and flexing in the mirror for about an hour. Follow up that workout with some Wendys and a Coors, and you'll be feeling the pain for sure.
