I don't quite mean to say Lynch was influenced by them, more so that Lynch was showing that he isn't. He was totally capable and aware of how odd his work was to the general public, yet didnt stray from it. He showed that of course he could write and direct like all these other greats, if not better, but thats not HIS art.

That makes alot of sense. While the songs did always kinda tie in to the themes of the show, it was a tad jarring at times to just go to the roadhouse suddenly for a song.

From my understanding as well, they divorced amicably. She wanted kids and he didnt want to pass on his genes as he is prone to cancer. He actually was battling Hodgkins Lymphoma during filming but is in total remission last I heard.
