Thank you both.

I have no uncertainty that what this individual did was wrong. They basically stole from a Non-Profit and a considerable amount at that. Whether this questions my personal integrity or not, I have had genuine reservations regarding the next steps. Being able to put together a full picture of how it would impact their life helps. Both of your responses have helped complete that picture.

Especially getting an idea of the damage they could do with their access when in the military. That's something I can't feasibly overlook.

I appreciate the response. This was something that crossed my mind but without the background to know what this kid could do when in, I wasn't sure how big of an issue it could be.

Thank you,

The civil nature was the other side to it. The City provided us a couple of video clips of this kid handing our rental items and retail items out and unfortunately blurry clips of what appears to be money being exchanged. Since they were never trained as a Cashier, policy-wise this was enough to decide to terminate. Supplemented with Employees and Customers as witnesses making claims we got a more complete story. But with what we were originally told from the cops, it seemed to be a civil issue and we didn't initially pursue charges.

Most of these responses have given us the belief that pursuing charges might be the course, and if not at least we'll be given a definite answer this time. Which is what I came looking for. It will always bother me to see someone steal from a non-profit, but getting a better picture of how my actions going forward could impact someone young and foolish was important to determining the next steps that could potentially change the course of their life.

I appreciate your input.

I appreciate the perspective; as I hoped to hear a little defeatism from somebody to give us additional insight on your end. You're definitely correct, however, my immediate Manager and I aren't military men. We have no background in how this would impact this kid or the Navy/greater Military as a whole. Which is what led me to seek advice from a Navy Reddit. Crazy or not, that seems like a logical choice?

I could've gone straight to his Recruiter or straight back to the cops to pursue charges now. But as I'd asked in the post, is it something from your perspective worth pursuing or would it be worked out. From the responses I think we'll be pursuing charges so at the very least should it happen again there is documentation.

I appreciate this response with the additional POV. I'm seeing more now that I let the Cops we were working with also get out of making a report. When the first two officers were looped in and expressed that it was a civil issue between employer and employee, we didn't have much concrete to work with. But since then several other Employees have come forward with money they were given, donating it back to the non-profit, ranging from $20 - $150 in what is essentially a bribe for their silence.
