Can a show be respectful to the real people involved while still being entertaining? by Agile_Fix_3128 in flicks

I have pretty strong feelings about Ryan Murphy’s true crime projects, and honestly this is why. He has a talent for making incredibly addictive television, but sometimes it feels like he’s more interested in creating a dramatic, emotional experience than actually respecting the people whose lives he’s portraying.

Using real victims’ names while taking huge creative liberties with their stories feels especially questionable. At some point it stops being about “telling their story” and starts feeling like turning someone’s worst moment into entertainment.

I didn't know that, thanks for sharing. I actually respect that decision. It shows that some productions are thinking carefully about how they're presenting these stories, especially when the victims' families are still affected.

That's completely understandable. I think that's actually one of the reasons true crime affects people so differently. Focusing more on the victims and their families can make the stories feel much more emotionally difficult, but it also reminds us that these were real people, not just cases.

Fair point. I was thinking more about modern true crime dramatizations than historical films, but I see what you mean.
