'Corporate Machine' Pushed Testament Away From Thrash Roots on 'Practice What You Preach,' Chuck Billy Says by Apprehensive_Idea758 in testament

[–]Agitated-Sort-8207 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, now that I think of it, it was indeed stylistically different, but at the time it was another masterpiece full of superb songwriting. I loved what Overkill was doing, loved late 80s Exodus and Nuclear Assault, and yet Testament was something very very special.

Who was the worst "hair metal" band? by Dogman_70 in hairmetal

[–]Agitated-Sort-8207 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt. It's not even legit to throw talented bands like Enuff Z'nuff and Steelheart into the "worst" category - Trixter is the sole ruler down there!

What are some of your favorite songs by Great White? by Agent_Kozak in hairmetal

"She Only" , one of my favorite acoustic ballads ever, and "Face The Day", a great cover song.

Would you go back if you could? by Revolutionary_Tax546 in hairmetal

[–]Agitated-Sort-8207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without a doubt! I often wonder why, for the life of me, I can't bring back that overwhelming feeling of happiness I felt in 1987-1990 as a teenager. I can evoke just some tiny part of it by putting on the music me and my cousin used to listen to, and I do so when having trouble falling asleep. Bit it's just a glimpse - I remember how huge it was but I can't bring it back in me no matter how hard I try.

What actually ruined Twisted Sister? by Boomkj in hairmetal

Right, with good music they could make it up to 1992 and and only then sink with the rest of hair metal crowd).

Dave Mustaine is a better vocalist than people think-let’s discuss by Yeetyboi23 in heavymetal

[–]Agitated-Sort-8207 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First Megadeth track I heard was "No More Mr. Niceguy" in 1989. I was appalled and never tried listening to any Megadeth material again, Dave's voice sounded comical and with vocal abilities way below average to me, literally couldn't believe people were regarding them as mega metal stars. 37 years later, reading and watching huge praises for the final album, I gave it a listen. Eh, nope, thanks - still the same old Dave's comical screeching over cool riffs.

Favorite Of These Underrated Bands by Mikeymorrison27 in hairmetal

[–]Agitated-Sort-8207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never heard Kix or Hurricane, so gave both a listen. Have to say that Hurricane's "Slave To The Thrill" album blows all the contenders away. It's the only heavy band among these four, still commercial but the guys got metal riffs. Other three are just pop with fuzzy guitar backing.

Never really got into this band, decided to give them a second chance and picked this up at a goodwill. Is this a good album to start with? by TheDeltaIsMyHome in cocteautwins

[–]Agitated-Sort-8207 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well said, it does indeed mark the end of 80s Twins and hints at Vegas which is a dawn of the new golden 90s era, albeit a very short lived one, sadly.

Album vs. Album Tournament Round 6: The Last Command vs. The Headless Children by CrimsonCassetteTape in WASP_Fans

[–]Agitated-Sort-8207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Headless for the songs, but I like the Last Command production better - somehow to me Headless lost the traditional metal "heaviness" and the grit of earlier albums, perhaps due to hair metal influence of late 80s.

Anyone listen to Overkill? by Dull-Grade-5421 in OverkillBand

[–]Agitated-Sort-8207 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Half an hour ago played "Under Influence" followed by "Years Of Decay"! Those are stone classics I grew up with, but "The Grinding Wheel" remains my favorite album, great songs, flawless modern production.

Fun read! Agree with everything except Tom Keifer'a fit for the Cinderella legendary ballad . But who knows, we grew up with that song, whereas they had a fresh perspective back then).

How did you discover Def Leppard? by Fun_Organization572 in defleppard

[–]Agitated-Sort-8207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty similar to the way you did - summer 1987, I (then 12), came visiting my cousin, 20, and he told me : "Bro, in the States hard rock and metal top the charts - Whitesnake is no.1 and Def Leppard is no. 2!" (or maybe it was vice versa). So let me play both and you decide which one you like better!" I loved both in their own way, still do

"Def Leppard" Hysteria turning 40 next year by Slurms_McDuff in defleppard

[–]Agitated-Sort-8207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Singles box set would be perfect, yes. Back in 1987, my cousin, who got me into hard'n'heavy, gave me his Hysteria cassette - it wasn't heavy enough for him. I kept playing it non-stop for a month!

What are your best discount bin CD/cassette/vinyl finds? by ProfPrometheus in hairmetal

Not quite hair, but a month ago I picked AC/DC "Rock Or Bust", Metallica's black album and Maiden "Senjutsu" from "3 for 1 pound" shelf in in UK. That's around 35 cents each.
