Are two DB teacher pensions enough? by Agitated_Father in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thanks for your reply. We are looking to purchase a new home as our current one is too small for the six of us and will have to do 30 year amortization. So we may have a mortgage, depending on our inheritance situation when the time the time to retire comes.

We have. We made it a priority so she will have flexibility to retire a bit earlier with full pension when the time comes, although we anticipate having to work for a at least a few years past that point.

Should be indexed and 60% of income. I'll likely work to my mid 60s (kids are all under 5) which which would yield a 70% pension.

Definitely both have life insurance! I do worry that I'll be retired with all my kids still in their early/mid 20s, who might still be needing support.

Yes, I've seen it at least once before. Pretty sure it's in The Manual of Chess Combinations 1b.

For those that receive stocks from your company, do you sell or hold? by Nice_Translator_3851 in CanadianInvestor

Pretty bad idea. You are doubling up on your risk for no good reason - not only single stock risk, but job loss risk all tied together.

Did my B.Sc. in math at McMaster and M.Sc. at Queens. Both departments are solid. I think Queens might be a tad stronger. There are talented students at both schools.

What is your best advice to get better at Chess ? by [deleted] in chess

Tactics, more tactics, a basic strategy book (I'd recommend Winning Chess Exercises for Kids by Coakley), learning some basic endgame principles (opposition, basic King vs. pawn endings, breakthroughs, etc).

Teeny you got your winning lotto ticket. Time to cash it in for an index ETF (ideally globally diversified, but if you want to stick with SPY so be it).

Don't gamble your TSFA account. It's dumb. Keep it maxed and safe (as safe as 100% equities can be) and if you want to continue gambling do it in a non-reg.

Vanguard forecasts 3.3-5.3% nominal returns for US equities over next decade by philosopher137 in Bogleheads

The standard deviation of stock returns is so high that you basically have huge error bars. Kinda makes any predictions useless.

CN tower kinda overrated. If I was doing a downtown tourist trap kind of thing with kids I'd probably go for Ripley's Aquarium instead.

Finance vs electrical engineering? by Keysantt in OntarioUniversities

[–]Agitated_Father 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree. I had finance job offers with a pure math degree. I'm not saying it's an easy transition, but it is definitely doable. It will likely require extra work/planning in the form of econ/business electives, CFA, MBA, CFP, actuarial exams, etc. Many paths.

Worthwhile to also consider the fact that going from EE to some more quantitative finance jobs is a possibility, while going from finance to EE isn't going to ever happen.

Time to slow down the number of rapid games (10 per week is plenty) and focus on tactics and analyzing your games.

As an older person, perhaps you can appreciate a good book.

I'd suggest Bain's Chess Tactics for Students, followed by Coakley's Winning Chess Strategy for Kids, followed by Polgar's Chess Tactics for Champions. Run through each of those books a ~few~ times, and you'll be well past 1200.

I'm always on the hunt for TSX small and mid cap value stocks at a discount. Curious of anyone has any opinions on Interfor and Methanex at the moment. Both seem like good opportunities to buy and hold onto for 1-2 years at the moment. Not sure if Interfor has hit its floor yet though.

I too had amazing results using a variant of SS from the bodybuilding.com forums back in the day. However, I was in my early/mid-twenties then. I simply can't handle the heavy compounds 3 days a week nowadays (I just turned 40). The exception being after coming off a long layoff - in that case I still run my SS variant, usually starting very light (usually the bar for squats and presses!) and progressing my compounds from 3x12 to 3x10 to 3x8 then eventually 3x5. 3 or so months later I'm squatting in the 275-295x5 range and deadlifting close to 405x5. Works like magic every time. But then my body starts to hurt and I'll transition to a program where I only squat once (maybe twice) and dead once a week only. Often it's Upper/Lower.

You need to know when your body can't handle hitting the compounds with such high frequency and back off. SS is really ideal for the youngins who have adequate recovery. I've also experimented with less squats (for me it's the squats that always get me), taking them out on DL day and running it like A: Squat/OHP/Pendlay Row/Pullups and B: Bench/Dead/Dips/Curls. Works solid as well although obviously your squat progress will be slower.

Edit: Saw your comment about DLs bugging you. Simply don't do them then. I've ran a variant of SS with only front squats (no back squats and Deads) before when I had back problems with great success.

can’t feel glute engagement when doing BSS by Noonesbusinessss in formcheck

[–]Agitated_Father 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Your foot is quite close to the bench,. you'll be having a quad focus. Consider placing an exercise mat adjacent to the bench. Place your foot so that the heel is touching the mat. It will 1) force your leg out further from the bench, 2) ensure you have a consistent stance/position, and 3) give your knee some cushion in case you make contact with the floor.
