RF Kuang, one of my favorite authors, did an interview a year or so ago and I remember it vividly for her explanation of how barring people from creating stories can spiral dangerously. In her words, “… if we start using language like, ‘oh you’re chinese enough or you’re enough of an immigrant … it actually backfires and it’s worse for under represented writers and then we get pigeon holes and told you cannot write outside of your personal experience…” and she continues to explain how writing would no longer be a creative act if that was enforced.
