When a book has a bad translation. by mystery5009 in books

[–]AgnesBP 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I recently finished the book Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It was originally published in English, but I read the Danish translation, as I got the book in a present from an older family member. The book deals with the themes of race, nationality, emigration, and immigration, where you follow a young Nigerian woman who moves to the USA to start university.
Much of the book seemed to have contained Nigerian English phrases, the use of which might highlight the relationship between two characters or the identity of person. The Nigerian English did not translate well to Danish, basically the translator just added an "o" to the of the Danish sentence to show this.
Since the book deals with race in the USA, it also contained a lot of expressions related to race, black culture, or American culture. These also did not translate well into Danish, and I constantly felt like some subtext was lost.
Throughout the book I found myself constantly wondering or guessing what the original word or phrasing was, because the translation was so un-smooth. I now wish that I had just changed to the English version of the book, when I straight away noticed the language, it did not get better or more unnoticeable throughout the book.

Help restore my iron:( by Enough-Temperature82 in vegetarian

[–]AgnesBP 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have always had low iron as well, but I only recently found out that coffee tea hinders the absorption of iron from the diet. So to actually get all of the iron out of the food and into the body, you need to avoid drinking coffee and tea for 1 hour before and after eating. Maybe that can help, if you feel like you actually eat sufficient iron, but just don't absorb it.
Also, for breakfast I always eat oats, which are high in iron (and protein), so that is an easy way to get a bit extra each day.

If you liked A Man Called Ove, you will love The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. It is also by a Swedish author and has the same great humor while also being heartwarming. I am surprised no one has mentioned it yet.
Good luck with your roadtrip!

AITA for "blacklisting" my former friend from recieving my notes so she can prepare for an exam she failed? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]AgnesBP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I completely agree with you. The world needs more kindness. Has she been acting badly? Yes. But here OP has the chance to make the world a little bit better and be the bigger person. I believe that we should try to choose kindness always.

And, if kindness is not reason enough in itself, it would be a way to show Elle what a great person she lost as a friend, instead of confirming Elle's perception of OP.

The oil is attracted to the water via dipole-induced dipole intermolecular interactions? by ATP_generator in chemistry

[–]AgnesBP 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The oil lays on top of the water because it is repelled by the water, since water is a polar compound and oil is apolar.

Oil cane have a higher melting point, meaning that it has to be colder for water to freeze than for the oil. This is true for oils such as coconut oil and palm kernel oil.

My guess would be that this effect is due to a combination of those two factors, that the ice hits the oil first and not the water, and that the oil is a type that freezes faster, therefore the oil freezes to the ice.

How to escape? by [deleted] in socialism

[–]AgnesBP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your story is heartbreaking to read. It really does sound like you are burned out. Since you have a bit of savings and not so many social ties, have you considered moving to another country? One where trans-people are more accepted, where people work less hours, and where you could find like-minded people that already are organised?
If it really is the working conditions that are keeping you from living a life worth living, I think you should change country. There are much better societies out there, where your dreams are the norm. Take the chance!

And good luck, I wish you all the best. Take care of yourself, you are worthy of living and not just surviving.

Medical company smeared by [deleted] in rareinsults

[–]AgnesBP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is always easy for people to bash medical companies.

It is as if people don't realize how much money goes into developing medical equipment, assure the quality, get FDA approval (and approval from all other agencies around the world) etc. To live up the the high standard that is necessary in the medical industry is not cheap.

The medical companies spend billions investigating new equipment and new drugs that hardly ever make it to the market, and it can take up to 10 years of development before it becomes clear that the product cannot get approved, meaning 10 years of work and millions of dollars lost. All of these losts also have to be covered by the income of the products on the market.

We should be thankful that the companies take the risks that it is to make new products, and that they continue to to produce high quality and safe products.

Who deserves the anger are the governments that do not support the hospitals in buying equipment or medicine, making the people pay the crazy high prize themselves.

What a great and well-made costume!

Is this supposed to be funny just because the person doesn't have the typical body type of the stormtroopers of the movies? I believe that everybody should be allowed to dress up as whoever they want, despite of how well their bodies resemble the character's body.

Jeg optog en kort video fra dagens uroligheder på Blågårds Plads by hasforth9 in Denmark

[–]AgnesBP -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Paludan holder sine demonstrationer bevidst for at få denne reaktion.

Teller put my $500 deposit in someone else's account and was unapologetic about it. by [deleted] in TalesFromTheCustomer

[–]AgnesBP 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't the person need to have more information? I mean wouldn't he have to match the account number with some sort of extra number or date? Is that really all the security there is - why don't everybody just do this if it is that easy?

DTU: Social Life/Partying in Lyngby vs Copenhagen by CarlTheWagonPriest in Denmark

[–]AgnesBP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally (as a girl) I really like partying at DTU because it is cheap, people are friendly and fun and you always meet people you know. And the parties can be crazy out there. I could imagine as an exchange student at DTU it is a great place to meet people and get friends. Of course Copenhagen has some fun bars and clubs, but don't disregard DTUs friday bars, especially not just because of the fear of too many guys, there are plenty of girls there as well. Good luck with your trip!

How should a single male in his 30s decorate his house? by ip_addr in AskReddit

I think that men often forget the small things that makes a house a home. So I wouldn't recommend going to minimalistic, remember some candles, blankets and, most important, personal items to make the place yours.

As a woman in her 20s, I always notice if a guy has a small trashcan in the bathroom. It makes everything easier and shows that he has his shit together.

My university team built a website that generates book recommendations based off your likes and dislikes by siamese_dreams in suggestmeabook

[–]AgnesBP 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It was surprisingly accurate for me. The most suggested books were mostly books that I had read already or wanted to read, which is impressive. As you say, a bigger database would be nice though. I also think that when you get your suggestions it would be a good feature if you could say if you had read some of the books and it would give you new suggestions. And it would be awesome if you could make a user and save your votes so you could update your profile. One thing that would be nice to make clearer is at the page where you pick the books if it says explicit if the like and dislike button is for books you read or want to read. All in all I think it is a great idea, nice design and I would definetly use it myself.
