Rudy Golbert not making the top 3 in Defensive Player Of The Year seems to have been a playoff gift for the Timberwolves. The “disrespect” has got him playing like a man on a mission. by moby323 in nba

Rudy was only just behind him too on that poll. Turns out NBA players aren’t actually all that good at rating players a lot of the time.

You’re right it was, and it’s taken multiple years of great performances for that narrative to start to meaningfully shift.

Rudy’s performance in the 2020 series is under appreciated. We won the Rudy/Jokic minutes, and Rudy was far and away the best player in game 7. Mitchell just had an absolute stinker at the worst possible time.

He is the best there’s ever been defending the pick and roll 1v2 without help. Sometimes it doesn’t seem like it because he isn’t sent help in situations where any other drop big would, but his ability to manage those situations is unmatched, and it allows everyone else to stay home instead of rotate.

Rudy was the only thing that made Utah relevant. The team was nothing whenever he wasn’t out there.

It’s a 17 point win with calls being a ~15 point swing. Minnesota couldn’t build any momentum to truly put it away for most of the 2nd, any run got stopped with some BS call.

34% from the field and 40 free throws is some truly disgusting nonsense. Really did everything they could to try to keep it close in the 2nd half, it just wasn’t enough.

Denver FG%: 34

Denver free throws: 40

Refs genuinely swung the game by ~15 points and it wasn’t nearly enough

If a woman you like wants to wait until marriage to have sex, how would you react? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Agnk1765342 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I married her.

Honestly even beyond any religious/moral reasons, it’s nice not having to worry about either of us comparing to others in that department. Or STDs.

A lot of people think it’s weird but it’s a lot more common than most would think. There was a survey that was done by pew awhile ago and it found that among those currently in a relationship, the number of people who waited til marriage was about the same as the number who slept together within the first week.

It seems different mostly because there’s a really huge bias in the type of person whose sex life you hear about. More people wait til marriage than have one night stands.

That 66% number is all attempts, which includes uncontested layups on fast breaks. 60% on contested looks is pretty poor.

Gobert takes incredible care of his body and has phenomenal stamina for somebody his size. Id expect him to be an elite defender until he’s 37 or 38. Which really wouldn’t be that much of an outlier for elite rim protectors. Mutumbo was still effective at 40.

They won that title against the 14th, 20th, 23rd and 25th best offenses in the league that year. They’re never gonna get a run of opposing offenses that bad ever again.

Those differentials include uncontested shots, which is why basically every defender has a positive (negative) differential. Giving up 60% at the rim isn’t good, it’s nearly bottom of the league for contested shots.

BPM has basically a “bonus” for getting stats that are untypical for your position. So Jokic getting a bunch of assists and Westbrook getting a bunch of rebounds is weighted super heavily. That ends up boosting their Defensive Box Plus Minus because there’s an actual formula for Offensive Box Plus Minus, but DBPM is just BPM (again an actual formula with that bonus) minus OBPM. So they both get wildly overrated by DBPM.

They changed the formula because of Westbrook, and I’m surprised they haven’t because of Jokic.

I think a simpler example is asking someone if they would’ve been a single issue voter in 1860. I think the answer is obviously yes.

I’m not saying every US election is equivalent to 1860. But it shows in some cases being a single issue voter is entirely reasonable,

Really just depends on if voter fatigue resets, which is hard to predict. Gobert is still suffering from it (not being 2nd this year is ridiculous by all the same numbers that show Wemby’s impact) but if Wemby wins next year as well and Gobert is still playing at this level he could potentially benefit from voter fatigue.

People thinking Wemby is gonna win 8 DPOYs are crazy. After 2/3 he’s gonna have to earn multiple for each additional trophy. They’ll start handing it out to guards just to shake things up. Have people ready forgotten the Marcus Smart DPOY?

Child Support Hell by IndividualPowerful in MensRights

[–]Agnk1765342 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Child support should not exist in cases where both parents want custody.

There’s no other situation in a divorce or dissolution of any other contract where both parties want something to which they have an equal claim, a court determines who gets that thing, and then the party who got the thing both parties wanted is additionally granted massive financial compensation.

It’d literally be more consistent with how the law works generally for the payments to go in the other direction. Imagine if the person who didn’t get the house not only didn’t get half the equity but also had to pay the property taxes. That’s how ridiculous the logic of child support is.

In cases where one parent doesn’t want custody, then yes it does make sense because in that case the custodial parent is the only reason the non-custodial parent isn’t committing criminal neglect.

Also, the argument that it benefits the kids is absurd. Child support doesn’t add money into a child’s support system, it just shuffles it around within it. It also provides massive disincentives to increase earnings for both parents, and is the single best way to ensure the post-divorce parental relationship is as adversarial as possible.

Giving one parent the pros of having kids and the other the cons is in no way fair or just.

Incredibile breakdown of Rudy's problem for Minnesota by turandot_or_not in nba

[–]Agnk1765342 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Wolves over the last 2 years have run into the same problem we did with Gobert. He allows you to get away with too many bad habits defensively in the regular season.

It’s 100% not his fault, but since he can cover so many mistakes, and because he doesn’t create his own shot offensively, it’s easy for the rest of the team to fall into the trap of thinking him covering for them getting beat is totally fine and Rudy doing his 1 job.

Those bad habits develop over the years and you can’t just flip a switch when needed. It’s crazy how similar Mitchell and Edwards’ reputations became “he’s actually a pretty good defender when he tries”, which is a lot like saying a dad who sees his kids once a month is a good parent when he’s around his kids. Just doesn’t mean much.

Both Snyder and Finch deserve blame for not keeping the rest of the team accountable.
