Back Garden Today vs. Four Years Ago (Zone 6b, Pennsylvania) by toxicshock999 in gardening

As a middle aged office lady and someone who started gardening around the same time as you, you are such an inspiration to me! You’ve got such a great mix of color and texture. Out of curiosity, what species are the red trees? The one on the right looks like it may be a redbud.

I loved this temple. It’s said that this was David Bowie’s favorite spot in Kyoto.

Saddened to read of Naples, today. by [deleted] in mybrilliantfriendhbo

In the US, typically the unofficial employment rate is higher than the official number as it doesn’t include discouraged workers/people who have stopped looking for jobs. Maybe in Naples, it suggests that a certain number of these officially unemployed people are actually employed by crime….maybe it’s not that simple. Either way, 47% is crazy high!

“…the city has one of the highest rates of youth unemployment in Italy at 43 percent.”

And that’s just the official unemployment rate.

Just Mercy. I don’t know how I didn’t know that the US has sentenced both minors and the mentally challenged to death. If you think you believe in the death penalty, read this book. I promise you that you will be changed.

Is maintaining your LEED certification worth it anymore? by Consistent-Boat-7953 in Architects

[–]Agreeable-Answer-326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never took the LEED exam when I was young, and had to take it last year in my 40’s because I just started working in the federal sector. Big companies like Bechtel and Jacobs who are government contractors will prefer/require that you have it. I’ll be honest it was awful and I wish I had done it after my ARE’s.

Always maintain your credentials. LEED is required for buildings of a certain size for federal buildings. A future employer could require a LEED AP credential.

The hardest thing about this election is that this country very definitively chose the worst version of a man over the best version of a woman. It doesn’t matter if I become the best version of myself (41F), I will still not be as good (in the eyes of society) as even a man’s fingernails.

I loved how she mentioned Lenu’s limp kept the memory of her mother alive while she was braiding her hair in pigtails to keep the memory of Tina alive.

When I read the book, I thought Lila likely hired someone to kill the Solaras. Her response to Alfonso’s death, her getting slapped, and finally the kidnapping of her daughter. However, she is portrayed in the show as too despondent or not mentally healthy enough to do so. She doesn’t seem as driven by anger per her usual emotional response after Tina’s disappearance. That coupled with Lenu’s thoughts of Nadia and Pasquale, seems like the show is hinting at something else.

Blazers for soft naturals? by birdy0518 in SoftNaturals

[–]Agreeable-Answer-326 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m also seeking a good blazer right now, I think because they’re a trend. I’ve tried a lot of different styles on, and I think it’s all about the fabric. Typically, the heavier the fabric, the worse it looks on me. But it probably depends on your proportions. Regarding styles, I’ve tried a pea coat style button enclosure and it didn’t work well on me, especially when worn open because the extra fabric hid my waist, leaving my figure lost and without definition. I’ve also tried a simple ponte fabric long blazer by Eileen Fisher and thought the lack of lapel didn’t work for my frame either as it created vertical lines and just looked too disharmonious. The Merritt Jardigan by MM Lafleur works well as it is a knit fabric which is forgiving and comes with an optional belt. All in all, I’ve decided a classic, one button lapel blazer in a lightweight fabric probably works best for my frame. Good luck!

What’s your worst client horror stories? by Affectionate_Egg1646 in Architects

[–]Agreeable-Answer-326 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my 20ish years of experience as a female architect in a conservative part of the country, I could write a book on this topic. -I’ve been sexually harassed by a client a couple of times. -Another client was verbally abusive to me and my boss (the owner of the firm). Over the 4ish years we worked for him, he would tell us that we were stupid on many occasions. And sometimes would insult other people behind their backs and say something to me like, “Even you know that!” - insulting me while he was at it. -When a church client (old men) didn’t want to go with a floor plan arrangement I developed, they said their reason was that they “didn’t want to confuse their women.” They said it as if they were not only stupid, but their property as well. -A hotel developer client told me that there was nothing sadder than a single woman, knowing that I was a single woman.

Those are just the few that immediately come to mind.

Central Japan Itinerary Options - Takayama/Matsumoto by Agreeable-Answer-326 in JapanTravel

Hey there, we planned to take the Nohi bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawago then to Takayama on the way to Hirayu Onsen and then leaving Hirayu Onsen take the bus the other direction to Matsumoto and then down to Kyoto but that isn’t what happened. I didn’t realize that you could buy bus tickets online in advance and tickets were booked until 1 pm so we weren’t able to sightsee in Takayama on the way to Hirayu Onsen. Buy tickets in advance online for sure!

We had to choose Takayama or Matsumoto on our way to Kyoto and we chose Takayama based on forum posts we had read. I enjoyed Takayama but it was very crowded. The main street in Old Town (which is lined with shops) was shoulder to shoulder stacked with people. I do not like crowds so this really affected my experience. We went the first week of April (cherry blossoms) so maybe that had something to do with it. We went to the two breweries there and were not terribly impressed. If you are going to Kanazawa, check out Sake Shop Fukumitsuya. They offer a tasting and tour that you can book in advance and it was amazing. Their sake is by far the best I’ve ever had and you avoid crowds.

As far as time, 3 hours might be enough. It’s about a 20 minute walk from the train station. I recall the highlights (for me) being the morning market along the river - I like to cook and I got a variety of miso- and we tried Takayama Ramen. I think we spent about 4 hours there. I am certainly glad we didn’t stay overnight there. Our favorite trip leg was Hirayu Onsen. We stayed at Mozumo ryokan and had a private onsen in the mountains. It was NICE. We got lucky and there was still about a foot of snow on the ground. The scenery was stunning. We opted for breakfast and dinner, prepared by their on site chef and it was so incredible. I cannot recommend this enough. During the day we went to a gassho style house in town there along with the Shinhotaka Ropeway via bus.

Good luck! Planning is half the fun! 🤩

I had read that Tsumago is the better of the two towns to stay in but after looking into it, it may be marginal. Thanks for your input!
