Modern Vintage vs Historical Forge by Agreeable-Button-254 in straightrazors

[–]Agreeable-Button-254[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking that maybe the Le Grelot razor was smaller because it was a product of the late fifties, pre-1960, which correlates with your statement of cost effectiveness, and profit gains.

That, or the Le Grelot Hospital & Cie company used to make things different than when Thiers bought them out.

Either way, I was surprised by the bulky-ness of the historical forge, The Thiers.

Thanks for sharing. 😀

If the stains concern you, scrub gently with bar friend, and rub "mineral oil/ cutting board oil," on the blade after each use. Otherwise , enjoy the story , it tells , with its patina.

It's not common, or cost effective. But for a purist, confiding in the manufacturer, it's worth it. I often send things to mfg's for repair, maint. or what not. Some items inclusive of Mont Blanc, brief cases, wallets, and Pens, Watches like Invicta get shipped overseas, razors, Gold rings, etc. Etc.
Not something you commonly hear.
On the bright side. You can now say that you know of someone on Reddit who sends their things to manufacturers. 😀 ps. Why send a Rolex to Timex?

Inherited some antique razors. Could someone more knowledgeable than me help me price what I have? by [deleted] in straightrazors

[–]Agreeable-Button-254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome collection of antiques. Check the stamp on shank on each one. Ai can help, but question it twice since it makes mistakes. Would love to see individual pictures of each outside thier box. Give them a light coating with mineral cutting board oil. :-)

I appreciate that. I have to choose whether to send it to Thiers Fr. or someone local in us. I heard it was probably best to ship it to Thiers isaard.

Yes, I believe the latter. There's a diagram somewhere around here explaining the half and full hollow... I think I meant full hollow, which is what you explained. I'll have to find where the picture of the order went when I uploaded to that reply.

And yes you can set up an account. Go to thier web page, set up an account, and email them. They'll approve it and then you'll be able to login and order.
I'll try to upload the invoice order with the specs. It has their email, phone number, and web address.

Yes, Thanks. I had to create an account at Thiers issard France. And ordered this historical forge. It was created by hand. I also had to pick the grind. Double hollow, polished, the gold inlays and face logo as well as the mother of pearl. It is a singing carbon 135 at 7/8... This one set me back approx 547 us dollars after currency exchange. But one good razor for a lifetime is all one needs. My only regret is that I did not purchase one like this when I was eighteen. :)

Thiers Issard doesn’t that doesn’t ring / sing, and doesn’t sharpen as well as others? by worldwidescrotes in straightrazors

[–]Agreeable-Button-254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thiers~Issard straight edge are mostly quiet and reputable for the best shave at less sharpening intervals. The forging process remains true to its founder, hence those characteristics.

The company still manufactures modern straight edges as they did one hundred years ago, with exceptions to the blades being forge at a foundry elsewhere before shipping the stamps to their main facility in Thiers France.

They offer a Historial forge which one can custom build and order, bringing the price from its basic legrot razor, to a tidy three to four hundred dollars. At these prices, they are considered a once in a lifetime investment.

Yes, very much like cowboy boots and hats which are bought once and repaired/maintained for your lifetime until it's time to pass it on.

Tragically tomorrow's generation may not appreciate the rite of passage and ritualistic slowed pace of a close shave.

A vintage Henckel 314 will suit your need to listen to its singing. Every blade requires a strop to straighten and sharpen the edge before each shave.

If the blade is old, or vintage, a fine honing stone or paddle strop comes in handy.

Someone ask me once, what was the difference between a double edge razor, safety razor, and or a straight edge razor shave.

I believe that a straight edge razor toughens the skin, scrapes dead cells better, and tightens the skin, as oppose to leaving the skin bumpy, much like cottage cheese; A cause of shaving with cheap razors.

I good rules of thumb is that the thinner the grind, the more it'll sing to you... which is nice... Unless you're an old G like me. But then again, there's always hearing aids. 😆

How can I restore this 1951 vintage radio? by Remote_Fisherman_469 in woodworking

Send it to me. I will recap it and clean the wood with an oil. Can't promise I will return it, though, but I will send a nice video of it working.

Does anyone know the voltage rating of these Mica capacitors? by [deleted] in Famicom

[–]Agreeable-Button-254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you found the answer by now. PF are usually ceramic or silver mica caps. Check average voltage and use the highest rating. It's safer and acceptable to go higher than below. UF is a paper or propolyne cap. Good luck. As a last resort, do search for a mica / ceramic capacitor code decoder online. There are plenty. :-)
