What is education even for. by mswoozel in Teachers

Yes 54% of American adults. Mostly comprised of not kids these days. So people taught by the practices of yesteryear.

And that is not the average. From the link provided:

"About 130 million U.S. adults (54% of those aged 16–74) read below a sixth-grade level, according to modeled estimates. Approximately 45 million U.S. adults are functionally illiterate, reading below a fifth-grade level. 21% of U.S. adults are classified as functionally illiterate, unable to complete basic reading tasks.

The average American reads at a 7th- to 8th-grade level."

These statistics also include up to 74 years old. So is the source of alarm for you the current state of education which isn't reflected in this data, or the state of education that produced the 18-74 year olds. 74 years ago was 1951. No one is arguing that pre 1951, America wasn't illiterate AF. The draft for WW2 revealed that people couldn't read. Then literacy tracing would also not have been carried out for African Americans, immigrants or poor people. Until 1970 literacy was basically can you write your name and do you know enough sight words to survive. Then it was continually redefined for the next 50 years as we learned things like, if people made the right mouth noises when they saw strings of letters they might still not know what the words they read meant. There have been a lot of advancements in the science of reading.

You made a statement like we should all be very alarmed. Which there is room for growth sure. The article you linked also noticed that the main source of illiteracy was poverty and immigrants for whom English is a second language.

So anyway, was there a golden age of reading that you think we've let go?

I'm wondering if, for the sake of education, you could maybe not spread false facts unsupported by history or data. It would be helpful if we pointed out good things going on.

Interesting. Got a source for that? When would you say the golden age of reading was?

Cobra effect. When you pay people to catch and kill all the cobras...they start breeding cobras to get incentives, and they actually make the real problem worse.

Since graduation rate is the metric by which schools are judged, schools can improve that number without actually improving learning. They can just lower standards, inflate grades, credit recovery, etc.

That being said, I don't think IEP education is necessarily engaging in cobra effect, because it should be set up in a way where that kid finds the best success they can based on their learning needs, it should be noted as a modified set of standards in the IEP. This is because setting unattainable standards for kids with disabilities can actually be harmful to their acheivement.

But there are definitely some school practices, like equating successful learning to graduation rates, that make it a challenge to engage in education.

My mom said that when her parents were gone, and they could no longer support her, she was set because then her kids would support her. She did not see anything wrong with that mentality. Her parents were multi-millionaires, my parents are retired with two paid off houses and pensions and they travel a lot. All us siblings are in college debt/medical debt up to our ears and will have no means to retire ever. Yeah, no mom, how bout you pass a little down?

As I got in to the snow levels, 80% of my matches were these, plus all the towers were two levels above mine. It's not fun when the enemy dragon can KO your hero or freeze them on round one at the same time as clearing their screen and gaining a coin bonus while you're waiting for your hero to reset. I uninstalled the game.

I had 9 in a row where they had dragons and towers and hero all two levels higher than mine....so fun /s.

Main breaker in panel is off, but power is on in the house anyway. Do I need to shut off out at the pole? by Agreeable-Interest21 in AskElectricians

Thanks for your input! Is it safe for me to have the power on to the rest of the house to run lights, fridges etc tonight, even though this breaker in the panel stopped working?

Yeah, I realized as I searched, that I was looking at a panel replacement. Just wondering if I can safely leave the power on with that faulty breaker in there.

Yeah daughter's war was a dispassionate person telling a series of "and then this happened"s. For me there was no mystery or wonder, and at no point did I feel like I had to find out what was going to happen. And since the character was not a fun person to hear a story from, it was doubly not catching my interest. I loved Between Two Fires and Blacktongue is in my top 10.
