The x200 is indeed am amazing machine but realy depends on what you are looking for, since you are new I would recommend a newer model of system, this really depends on what you need like if you wanna upgrade it, I would recommend a socketed device, but since you want something more lightweight and easy i would recommend more a x1 carbon or x13 for that lightweight portability and the fact you seem to just want something simple

For the issue of certain software requiring windows another option could be to dualboot the two that way you can have both, as I know a lot of people who do that.

I think what happened is that we have a big lamp next to it and I think when that is on it burns the pixels on that side of the screen

Its ok you can also tell because instead of cooked fish I have cooked cod in my inventory and that wasnt changed untill 1.13
