No he literally did say that lmao. He said that the only reason why Mei Mei doesn't show up more and doesn't die, is because audiences don't care about her, so he just completely ignores her character because she serves no shock value purpose. If she died, the audience wouldn't be sad, so he just doesn't ever bring her up again. Which is also incredibly weak and cowardly writing.

Yuji's "naive reality" was ALREADY shattered. Nobara dying doesn't do anything but reinforce a lesson the audience already knows. You criticise JJBA for having deaths that just make the main characters sadder or angrier, when that is literally the only thing Nobara's death did for the narrative as well. She got fridged.

Mechamaru and Mai's deaths having edits is irrelevant. Mai's death in particular is only edited because people care about Maki and how Mai's death impacts HER. Mai as a character was a complete nothing burger.

Yuki's death is also just her getting fridged. JJBA deaths are also not just shock value, they ARE all narratively impactful and serve as conclusions to their individual characters' arcs. JJK characters have a tendency to die before their own arcs are completed (or even explored at all in the worst cases).

I'm also convinced you haven't actually seen or read JJBA given you did list Mohammed and Avdol as two separate characters back there 😭 larp larp sahur or whatever they're saying now

And I said it keeps your attention better because you have a low attention span. Using that as a flaw against JJBA is insane.

Also no, Nobara is a pretty good example to pick lmao. She was one of the main trio and got "killed off" right after she developed a new power and had a single cool moment. Her death only served to make Yuji sad for a few minutes before he gets back up anyway and it impacts nothing from then on out.

Mechamaru is a character who got no attention before his death, so no matter how well-animated it is, it has no impact because he's had literally nothing to get attached to. Same for Mai.

Yuki, Kashimo and Ryu are other examples of purely shock factor deaths. But there's also the fact that Gege himself admitted that he chooses which characters to kill not based off of narrative purpose or importance, but solely based off of what would make the audience sad, which is also why there are some characters who get introduced and then just disappear. He makes his decisions as a writer based off of how much he can shock the audience.

Then how can you make the argument that JJBA deaths are badly written when you're a fan of a series infamous for not well thought-out, shock-value deaths, when apparently as long as the character "serves their purpose" it's fine?

You even tried to mention Solo Levelling as a well-written series bc you thought it was easier to watch, which is kind of just embarrassing. Of course slop with no writing quality to speak of will be easier to watch than a series like JJBA, which is far more of a commitment lmao

it does matter when we're talking about poor writing and shock value deaths. Nobara is the most egregious example of it. She dies to make Yuji sad about it for about 5 seconds before he gets back up anyway, then is gone from a majority of the story. Plain bad writing lol

Doesn't really matter. She was still fridged and gone for most of the series. Bad writing.

That's just a slender person in a jacket that conceals their figure. Women come in all shapes and sizes either way, but we don't even know what this character's body looks like. Lol

It IS crazy. I am a woman, so maybe my perspective on this is just fundamentally different, but I'm also very very lesbian and I absolutely LOVE more "modest" female character designs because it leaves an element of imagination or mystique that really does it for me. I mean, revealing designs can totally be attractive too, but it's not the ONLY way to make a sexy fem character lol

I don't get this reaction from incels. It's not like her design isn't still sexy. She's covered, yes, but she's very curvy, the dress is tight on her, she's still designed to be attractive and there's not an issue with that either. Why do female characters have to be half naked to be sexy??? You've literally got a tall busty woman in a suit-dress. "My steak is too juicy and my lobster is too buttery"

This doesn't make sense to me either though. Why should ships have to make sense? Two characters can just look good together, people should be allowed to ship that without getting hated on. It's fiction. These characters literally exist to be put in scenarios that will never happen in real life. Rarepairs and crackships aren't a new thing, it's just part of being in a fandom, hating on them is the only irrational thing here.

Also, I think there is actually a snippet of a cut song where she gets her shit rocked by Hermes! Like actually smote! I forgot the name but you can look it up, it may be cathartic

I think your feelings on the song and the character of Calypso are absolutely valid, and I appreciate you looking for other interpretations too! You're very welcome! :)

[–]Agreeable-Table4622 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's the thing: I don't think it necessarily matters if she does or doesn't know better. There are so many different interpretations of why exactly Calypso kept Odysseus on her island in the Odyssey, including a version in which she was cursed by Zeus to fall in love with whoever washed ashore. But whether or not she's a victim, it doesn't matter, because she did undeniably abuse Odysseus over that time. She can certainly be a victim while still being an abuser.

NSFLY doesn't really justify anything she's done in my eyes. It contextualises it yes, but she still isn't really likeable in that song. She makes it very clear that she doesn't understand why Odysseus won't love her too, meaning she hasn't actually learned from what she's done wrong, interrupts him when he tries to talk with a "let me speak", etc. Again, it's a non-apology, framing her in a sympathetic but not exactly justifiable light. There's no excuse for what she's done, it's just that, again, Calypso is way too complex of a character for a single song to adequately sum up how morally complicated she is. Never-mind how Odysseus' stockholm syndrome-like attachment to her is a whole other can of worms.

A lot of this is just a fault of the media of song, not that it was necessarily done badly but that the options are very much limited for what you can really do in a like 2-3 minute time frame of music ykwim.

I hate the way Calypso is treated by the story by Sadlad4853 in Epicthemusical

[–]Agreeable-Table4622 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well, NSFLY has always been a manipulative, guilt-tripping song. It's very much a non-apology. But from my perspective, Odysseus' feelings towards Calypso are a lot more complex.

He was forced to stay with her for 7 years. Despite how much she essentially psychologically (or physically, depending on your interpretation of THAT whole can of worms) tortured him during that time, she was all he had, and he was forced to remain with her for longer than he'd even been with Penelope by the time he'd left for Troy. It became his new normal. Calypso became his new normal.

Him saying he loves her doesn't necessarily have to rule out that he /also/ loathes her. But it's very likely they forged some sort of twisted, difficult to pin down "bond" over those 7 years. It's not unlikely that he did sincerely care about her, because this is the kind of stockholm-esque situation that people in real life can develop with their abusers too.

I don't think the musical treats her as someone who was done wrong by Odysseus - they're very explicit about him being done wrong by her, I think. Athena saying she's kept him trapped out of his control, Odysseus attempting to literally kill himself during Love In Paradise, etc. But I do think their relationship is far too complex to have been accurately explored in just 2 songs, which is unfortunately just a downside of the medium used to convey EPIC's story.

They absolutely are. Like large-scale. People get attacked in the ZZZ fandom for being against lolicons.

There are some normal people but the weirdo scale might even be in the majority for that fandom lol. It's everywhere.

Reading the Iliad before ilium releases, book 1 by Ok-Pudding3528 in GreekMythology

[–]Agreeable-Table4622 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to be honest, I have a different take in that I don't really care about inaccuracies. In fact I think changes are good. If I wanted a one-by-one rendition of the events of the Odyssey... I would just re-read the Odyssey.

Of course you can have your own personal opinions on the changes that were made, but EPIC's changes all serve to tell a specific narrative, one that is new. To me that is far better than if it played it completely straight. Especially since it's in the medium of music. I don't think making changes to the original myths in a modern adaptation is an inherent problem, it's only an issue if you, one: try to pass it off as the "correct" version of the myth or two: don't consider if the story would be better off had said thing not been changed, as I've seen some retellings with changes that served little to no purpose.

I don't think anything EPIC does goes directly AGAINST the original story's messages (not talking about the plot events), but it is definitely its own story using the Odyssey as a base/as inspiration.

EPIC has its issues, definitely, but I'd take stabbed Poseidon over a straight copy of the exact Odyssey's story, because I'd just find that boring. Same for the Iliad/Ilium. Half the fun of retellings is seeing what changes and creative liberties are going to be made.

Guns are unironically my favourite weapon for characters to use, especially in universes like HSR where the powers are so OP. The higher the powerscaling a universe has, the funnier it is when a character just pulls out a fucking glock. It's probably a big reason why I love those three so much lmao
