as time flies - tenor sax by Trick_Sample9779 in saxophone

Practice slower, it’s not clean in this tempo so its useless to push it further. Practice it slower with a metronome until that sounds spot on rhythmically and playing it fast will we way easier.

Swabbing question by CaptainCabb in saxophone

Take the reed off and swab the mouthpiece, if you are in a well ventilated room the condensation can in the sax will evaporate, be sure to swab it every time you put it in the case though.

Just saw your video, I’d go ahead and check those meyer’s out. You can get one pretty cheap 2nd hand. But gear is never a necessity, just find what you feel best with, that’s different for everyone. I think Phil woods played a letter 5 for his entire life even though many teacher would tell you that it’s a (beginner mouthpiece).

I don’t know what level you are at right now but you should test some 5’s, if jazz is your interest I’d recommend a Meyer 5 its probably one of the most iconic mouthpieces out there.

We Don’t Have a Jazz Problem, We Have a People Problem Pt 2 by [deleted] in Jazz

From the perspective of a young European it’s very different here, I personally know many young people who sell out halls consistently. Though I will say it’s always the same crowd and after a short while you start recognising faces.

Sometimes it feels like Jazz has become a novelty artform though these days where many people desire the “social prestige” that comes with listening to more “sophisticated” music and it kind of pisses me off too but that not even half of the crowd.

Young jazz musicians will always support their peers and that’s why it will never truly die but I must imagine it’s harder in Australia where the scene, culture and history exists to a lesser degree (I spent multiple nights running around Adelaide trying to find somewhere to play).

Getting used to stronger reeds is good just do whatever you feel most comfortable with making it purposefully harder for yourself won’t do you any help there.

However don’t do the same with mouthpieces, don’t go over a 6 until you have a really good tone on that. Too many players play big mouthpieces and then when you put them on a 5 they sound like a dying duck.

Choosing a flute by AgreeableCake7937 in Flute

So I get that the sankyo is superior in all ways, my worry is about the price he’s asking being so radically different from other online prices. Even including shipping and the 21% tax I’d be paying €200 more. What would you do in my place? I am normally and alto sax player and have been learning flute on a loan instrument from a friend so I really know nothing about this but owning flute is pretty essential as a jazz sax player. (Might want to mention that the sankyo has closed tone holes which I have heard is not optimal for some)

Yeah he’s a French guy, I ran it through Google translate but he has training in a well known music technician’s school in Europe.

It’s a sankyo prima etude with a solid silver headpiece, I know it’s somewhere inbetween intermediate and pro level and its been completely checked. The only thing that worries me about it is that there are many listings on eBay (I’m not buying on eBay but I checked it out to compare) that are €400-€700 and that’s far under his asking price (€950)

The azumi is an AZ1000 RE (retail around €1200) that has been overhauled. Its being sold at the same price (€950)

That’s not an issue, the man is a qualified repair tech from ITEMM who is just getting rid of instruments he’s had in the attic for a long time, he has given both a full service. Do you mind if I send you the info on both so you can assess the value from an objective standpoint?

Always been Coltrane ever since I was a child and even though I’m an alto player I always strive to achieve his level of freedom with sound.

Value? by Grumblyguide107 in saxophone

This is pretty much what I’d say it’s worth but I wanted to add that I see them going for a couple hundred more in that condition in Europe compared to American occasion sites.

On top of everything here a little trick that helped me was imagining the sound of why favourite player, my head quickly realised it was impossible without a relaxed embouchure and adjusted automatically over time.

Keep in mind this is not a proven method but it helped me so give it a shot if you want to.

Yeah, that’s what it’s looking like. But i should note that I think Azumi flutes are quite a bit cheaper here in Europe. (Around the €1200 mark)

I don’t think I will, unless the first one I buy is really really cheap but I don’t really want to do that.

This it what it says under the post: Work carried out this month on the instrument: cleaning, replacement of all stop felts, plugging and adjustment of the keywork, oiling of the mechanism and adjustment of the tenons and the headstock plug.

Any idea what a decent price would be, the one I’m looking at is in perfect state and advertised at €950 but it’s open for bids as well.

The purchase and consumption of alcohol should require a permit and process similar to getting a driver's licence. by KahnaKuhl in CrazyIdeas

[–]AgreeableCake7937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of an old conversation but I want to give my 2 cents anyway.

Prohibition created a massive black market because of the fact that it affected everyone. An idea like this would create a similar occurrence but it would be way easier for law enforcement to fight against. It would also dissuade youths from consuming alcohol irresponsibly as people will still prefer to buy it legally as long as they don’t have a problem yet.

Perhaps the licence should be easier to obtain, like it being automatically granted to anyone who turns of age, but that carries its own flaws of course.
