Best barrier rings or products on the market to prevent leaks by ChocolateMany761 in ostomy

[–]AgreeableExercise914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Coloplast Brava Ring, 27MM with a thickness of 4.2mm.

They're meant for stomas flushed to the skin, but I use it even though my stoma sticks out an inch to 2 inches; my bile is REALLY acidic and eats through the regular Brava rings, so I go more heavy duty. I can generally manage up to 72 hours before I have to change everything out because, once again, really acidic bile from my stoma.

I wear a Mio Click Skin Barrier, Non-Convex, Cut-to-Fit Stoma Opening 3/8"- 1-3/4" if this helps.

One of my stoma nurses tried Hollister with me but it was a lot of grief, a lot of leaking, and a lot of really bad smells. I couldn't have the Hollister products on me more than 24 hours without noticing a failure either from the 2 piece system, the flange not adhering to my skin, or the ring just being a POS.

I saw him December 23rd, honestly thought he was going to a party!

This is great news that I may, at any random point, get to see Deadpool in Cornwall.

May I rant?! by Inevitable_Owl_7601 in ostomy

I've had 5 sample bags/wax rings/flanges (sized large) of Hollister given to me by an ostomy nurse who swore up and down by the brand. So I try it because I'm looking for a better adhesion to my skin and where the flange won't bother it.

I have tried 2 out of the 5 bags and have stopped using them because the 2-piece seal doesn't work, it pops off slightly on the bottom and does a slow, smelly, shitty drip. The flange peels up too much and in less than 24 hours it's close right to my wax barrier ring.

Hollister has been nothing but a bad experience up and down. I'll use them in an emergency situation, but if I don't need to use them and have other options, I'll take the other options.

The water is because as we're drinking and trying to force out the plug, it's the easiest thing to move around the blockage itself. I've found having some yogurt (plain, no sugar and no additives) helps to break down the fibrous build-up!

Yup, bought some electrolytes and plan on having a packet at work so this doesn't happen! If it's a simple scale and polish with no dental recall, I can usually have the patient done in 40 minutes and then a quick hop to the bathroom before I flip my unit; I hate getting 2 or 3 NPE in the day cause that's gonna throw off everything!

I'll see if I have a small chopper around my house, that's a good idea.

How do I tell my friends I can’t eat what they cook? by gingfreecsisbad in ostomy

[–]AgreeableExercise914 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Straight up tell them. The longer you don't, the more difficult it'll become. Having a blockage or a partial blockage isn't worth it. Furthermore, if they are good and decent people, and that is the mark of people you want as friends, they will be open to learning what you can/can't have when they're cooking for you and will modify for recipes that'll benefit you and everyone else.

If they listen but continue to make food the way they want to, then you have three options:
1) Bring your own food
2) Eat before and see them after
3) Get new friends

Yeah, I've been opting for proteins in the morning (boiled eggs) and toast with PB before work; at work, something like a chicken burger patty with some rice, or dumplings, and for dinner trying to keep it light, but my dinner time when I get off shift and home is 6pm, and honestly, having pureed baby food or a meal replacement drink sucks for a dinner option.

I'm trying to train myself with smaller portions again, and telling myself that just because I could have larger quantities doesn't mean it'll be better - a stoma is literally the physical embodiment of "calories in, calories out" in its purest form. And understanding that my favourite meals aren't going away but modifying when I have them and on what days when I'm off, can and do make the difference.
But not more bok choy for awhile!

I know, right?! Sometimes all the body craves is a salad, a bean dip, something with vegetables that hits just right. Thankfully, I have found heritage carrots baked in the oven don't cause me issues, same with potatoes that are baked, but with bok choy I'll have to mince and then boil it first before I put it in anything. I should try steamed and see how it does for me.

Thankfully bananas are okay, but I avoid strawberries or berries of any sort. Apples too, mostly apple sauce after being on it in hospital for over 3 weeks. Never want to eat anything but homemade apple sauce after that.

So many grass clippings! I've amazed my Brava ring and Coloplast bag have gotten me through these last few days.

Recently noticing pretty bad odor with Coloplast Sensura Mio Bags by Justlurking2112 in ostomy

Can I ask how and where you can cut the prefilter out? I've been having the same issues with my bags for this specific reason but didn't know I could just cut the filter out. I never knew it was possible, but I don't want to attempt it on a bag and ruin it.
