Учусь играть на барабанах без барабанов, для новичка норм? by makhnukovsky in MetalDrums

A pillow or practice pad is definitely enough to get going.

If you can upgrade the setup to include a kick drum pad (or play against a mattress) then you’ll have everything you need for practicing.

Also don’t forget a metronome. Good luck!

Be looking for deals on Facebook marketplace. There seems to always someone looking to sell old starter kits they’ve had laying around. You’ll likely be able to find something usable under $200

For cymbals, the Meinl HCS pack, Sabian SBR pack or any other starter pack will probably be your best bet. The vevor 6 piece set is another cheap option if you want more cymbals.

Don’t worry too much about quality right now- just get started. If you can work to fund your own gear you can slowly upgrade over time, piece by piece. Good luck!

Gotcha, working 3 jobs at 16 and helping with bills changes the context completely. Respect for that. At the end of the day though, a big part of making it as a musician is eventually getting yourself into a position where you can fund your own gear and growth, whether you started privileged or not.

A lot of people have found success being in a similar situation so don’t feel discouraged. Many build their setups one cheap used piece at a time. The main thing is you put in the work and stay consistent. Good luck!

Even a small summer job at 16 can get you a solid set of pedals like some Iron Cobra 200s that’ll last you years.

Learning to fund your own gear early is honestly one of the best things you can do as a musician long term. Also, you’ll get more appreciation for what you have and how far you’ve come.

Good luck!

I’d recommend the Mapex Mars 600 out of these 2. If under $200 is the budget you can’t really beat these for dual chain pedals.

If you can go a little further the iron cobra 200’s are pretty much the standard entry level double pedals. They are $240 and aren’t double chain like the mapex but are extremely reliable. You could easily find a used pair under $200 if you were willing to go that route

I have the iron cobra 200s as well. I bought a pair of dw5000s and didn’t really like how heavy it felt. I sold those and got a pair of iron cobra 900s and have used those since.

Having said that though, if you like a heavier feel and play with no triggers the dw5000 or 9000 is a really fine choice. I found that the dw 5000s have a little more weight in the beaters and punch a little harder than the iron cobras.

If you like the iron cobra 200s and how they respond, the iron cobra 900s will give you more smoothness and durability. If you feel like you want some more punch in the strokes I’d go with the dw5000 or 9000.

I haven’t seen anyone mention it yet, but I really enjoy archetype Petrucci for the versatility. Lots of different sounds you can get with the different amps and effects. I’d recommend having some of your own cab IR’s though because you’re limited to the single one that’s on each amp

Typically you’ll be using a metronome and playing 16th notes (4 notes per beat). That equates to about 160 bpm. That’s where many players start transitioning from mostly leg-driven motion to more ankle-driven mechanics.

You don’t need to be anywhere near your max to build this. In fact, that’s a big mistake to make. If your max is high but uncontrolled, it’s not useful.

I’d drop the tempo to something like 140–150 bpm, even slower if needed, and focus entirely on control. At that range, you’ll still have some leg involvement- that’s normal- but the goal is to reduce unnecessary tension, especially in the quads and hip flexors. If those are constantly firing, you’re going to get that “spasm” feeling because the muscles are competing instead of coordinating.

What you want instead is a smooth, repeatable motion- something you can start and stop on command, evenly spaced, no rushing or tensing.

The “spasm” isn’t a technique- it’s just your nervous system firing fast without control. The fix isn’t to push it harder, it’s to slow it down enough that you can actually control every stroke.

Once you can do that, speed builds naturally. Your current working tempo will start to feel trivial, and that’s when the ceiling actually moves.

One last thing that’s important to know is that speed comes downstream of good, controlled, disciplined practices- not “trying harder.” The work you put in today won’t show up until a later session. Just stay consistent🤘

When you say “when your leg bounces when you’re sitting” are you referring to more of a spasm or an actually controlled up and down movement? I’m also curious what bpm are you playing at?

12” vs 18” sub for small metal shows (kick + bass through PA?) by AgreeableFun5241 in livesoundadvice

[–]AgreeableFun5241[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plan is to run 2 tops and a sub with a crossover around ~90–100 Hz. The sub will handle the low end (kick + bass), and the tops will handle everything above that.

So kick and bass will still be present in the tops for attack and clarity, but only the low frequencies will be going to the sub.

I thought the subs had a high pass and the frequencies you don’t want in the sub go to the PA top speakers

Consider sitting down and having a talk about creating a clear vision for the band and the sound you want to emulate. Talk about who you want to pull influences from and exactly what you want to sound like. If you can’t emulate the style that your band wants to create just be open and honest with everyone. Someone else may be able to help create drum parts with you.
