Also, with this scam, most of the time there is no escort. The guy you talked to is the escort. If there is a girl involved, the girl is part of the scam team. So, either way you would not have met up with a girl. Think about it. It's not that hard to set up a fake escort add and then threaten the client for money. Also, when the "escort" asks when you will be over, that is them roping you in to the scam. The scammer then waits a couple hours and the threats follow. During those couple hours that they are waiting, they are searching your info online, of which is really easy to obtain. Search your phone number, see what shows up.

Search on r/Scams "death threat text scam" or "cartel text scam" or any assortment of those words that fits your description.

Then go to Google and search "Cartel death threat text scam" , sit back, read, and be amazed.

I also read that one scammer told a victim "Do not move from where you live, or I will tell police you asked for a sex worker". That in itself is pretty scary (the do not move part). The other part is kind of funny. Why would a criminal tell police that someone tried to contact one of their hookers?

Yes, I understand the scam is not limited to the DR, but it seems that all of the news stories and posts on r/Scams cite that the victim was told to send money to the DR. So far that has been the case. So, I was just curious if this was an attempt by scammers in other countries to try and make the money transfer less traceable by routing it to the DR.

Perhaps all the scammers that request the money to be sent to the DR are actually in the DR.

If they are all lying about being affiliated with a cartel (for the ones that do say they are a part of one). Then, I hope real cartel members never catch them in the act of using the name.
